explorer.exe using 99% of cpu time

My computer has been really slow and when I check task Manager it shows that explorer.exe is using 99% of the cpu time. After following the 5 steps to take before posting a highjack this log the computer seems to be running normally for now. However I am not convinced that the computer is totally clean. Can you please check it for me. Here is my Highjack this log.

You are right to be concerned – you have Vundo. But don’t worry, we’ll soon have you clean.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your system is clean.

Show Hidden Files
Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Downloads
Please download Cleanup! or use this Alternate Link if the main link does not work and install it. You will use this later.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW!

Download Ewido Anti-Malware
This is a 30 day trial

Install Ewido Anti-Malware.
Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
On the top of the main screen click Shield
Click the word active to change it to inactive
On the top of the main screen click Update.
Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
- Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
- Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
- I also recommend changing the "Update interval" to something more reasonable like 12 hours.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

Download this file - combofix.exe to your desktop. Alternative download location here.

IMPORTANT - You must place combofix on your desktop!!

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

When finished, the tool will produce a log for you at c:\combofix.txt. Post that log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Reboot
Reboot your system in Safe Mode.

Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8 (dependent on your system this may be F5 or another key)
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Use the arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

File Deletions
Go to Start>Run and type or copy/paste - regsvr32 /u occache.dll and hit Enter

Delete the following File indicated in RED if it still exists.

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\USYP_0001_N85M2606NetInstaller.exe

Go to Start>Run and type or copy/paste - regsvr32 occache.dll and hit Enter

Run CleanUp!
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from Start > All Programs). Set the program up as follows:

Click Options
Move the slider button down to Custom CleanUp!
Check the following:

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Cleanup! All Users
Click on the “Temporary Files” tab and uncheck the box for “Scan drives for file matching” if it’s checked.

Click OK, Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and DO NOT REBOOT when prompted.
Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these BEFORE running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility.

Run Ewido
Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)

Click Scanner
Click on the Scan tab
Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
When the scan is complete click Recommended Action and change it to Quarantine
Then click Apply all actions

Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop.

NOTE: Ewido scan may require an hour.

Reboot
Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Online Scan
Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner.

1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. *Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *

Begin the scan by selecting My Computer

If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.

Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.

Click on See report then click Save report

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

[indent]O.K. I have finished the steps you have given. Just one issue to note, when running in safe mode I have no desktop icons no task bar and no start menu to work from so I did everthing from task manager. I guess this would be another issue to address. Anyway here are the logs.

Combofix must be run from the desktop and in Normal Mode.

Please delete your existing copy, download again to your desktop and run it from there. Then post a fresh combofix.txt log.

1. Please download The Avenger to your Desktop.

Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.

Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
Click Done
Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:

It will Restart your computer.
On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt at the end of this fix.

Please post back with avenger.txt and a fresh HijackThis Log.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make that the following are selected:

Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

Extended

Scan Options:

Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK

Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer

This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:

Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Take note of the name(s) and location(s) of any file(s) it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Please post back with the Kaspersky Log and a fresh HijackThis Log. Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems. In order to provide you with the best possible help, please ensure that HijackThis logs are produced from Normal Mode.

Sorry I forgot to give you an update on the computer. It is running much better now and I haven't seen explorer chewing up processor time like it was. If the system is clean can I clean up my desktop and perhaps stop some things from loading at startup.

Note: if it resists, you may have to boot to safe mode to delete it.

Any more problems? If not we’ll just tidy up and I’ll let you go, along with my recommendations for staying safe and secure. Now you can remove items from start up as well.

You can go ahead and delete any special tools we used (SmitRem, SmitfraudFix, ComboFix, etc). They won't serve a future purpose and are replaced with updated versions frequently, so the copies you have are probably already out of date and there is therefore no need to keep them.

Reset Hidden/System Files
To reset your hidden and system files:

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

System Restore
To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK.

To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK.

This will create a new Restore Point.

IMPORTANT!!!
Please ensure that Windows is patched against the WMF exploit. This is a dangerous vulnerability that opens the door to multiple infections. Visit Window's Update to get the KB912919 patch if you have not already done so.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

Ad-aware
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

IE-SPYAD
IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here.

SnoopFree
SnoopFree is a real time monitor that notifies you when a programme wants to record your keystrokes or read your screen. Note that SnoopFree is only for XP systems.

MVPS Hosts File
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file.

A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:

Anti Virus Software
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your system is clean. Show Hidden Files Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option. Downloads Please download Cleanup! or use this Alternate Link if the main link does not work and install it. You will use this later. NOTE Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW! Download Ewido Anti-Malware This is a 30 day trial Install Ewido Anti-Malware. Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido On the top of the main screen click Shield Click the word active to change it to inactive On the top of the main screen click Update. Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine". Under "Reports" Select "Automatically generate report after every scan" Un-Select "Only if threats were found" I also recommend changing the "Update interval" to something more reasonable like 12 hours. If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido. When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido. Download this file - combofix.exe to your desktop. File Deletions Go to Start>Run and type or copy/paste - regsvr32 /u occache.dll and hit Enter Delete the following File indicated in RED if it still exists. Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from Start > All Programs). Set the program up as follows: Click Options Move the slider button down to Custom CleanUp! Check the following: Empty Recycle Bins Delete Cookies Delete Prefetch files Cleanup! All Users Click on the “Temporary Files” tab and uncheck the box for “Scan drives for file matching” if it’s checked. Click OK, Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and DO NOT REBOOT when prompted. Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. Online Scan Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner. 1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it 2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place * Begin the scan by selecting My Computer If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later. Click on See report then click Save report You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report. The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files: Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT Now click on Scan Settings In the scan settings make that the following are selected: Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: Extended Scan Options: Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases Click OK Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer This will program will start and scan your system. The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. Now click on the Save as Text button: Save the file to your desktop. Copy and paste that information in your next post. Take note of the name(s) and location(s) of any file(s) it detects but fails to clean. * Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Please post back with the Kaspersky Log and a fresh HijackThis Log. It is running much better now and I haven't seen explorer chewing up processor time like it was. If the system is clean can I clean up my desktop and perhaps stop some things from loading at startup.

You can go ahead and delete any special tools we used (SmitRem, SmitfraudFix, ComboFix, etc). They won't serve a future purpose and are replaced with updated versions frequently, so the copies you have are probably already out of date and there is therefore no need to keep them. Reset Hidden/System Files To reset your hidden and system files: Click *Start.* Open *My Computer.* Select the *Tools menu* and click *Folder Options.* Select the *View* tab. Deselect the *Show hidden files and folders* option. Select the *Hide file extensions for known types* option. Select the *Hide protected operating system files* option. Click *Yes* to confirm. Click *OK.* System Restore To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK. To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK. This will create a new Restore Point. IMPORTANT!!! Please ensure that Windows is patched against the WMF exploit. This is a dangerous vulnerability that opens the door to multiple infections. Visit Window's Update to get the KB912919 patch if you have not already done so. Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs: Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. *Ad-aware* Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. *IE-SPYAD* IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here. *SnoopFree* SnoopFree is a real time monitor that notifies you when a programme wants to record your keystrokes or read your screen. Note that SnoopFree is only for XP systems. *MVPS Hosts File* The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file. *Alternate Browsers* Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer Firefox Opera Maxthon *Firewalls* A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use: Sygate Personal Firewall ZoneAlarm Tiny Personal Firewall *Anti Virus Software* It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
