Freezing/Locking Up in Windows XP
Hi. After various amounts of uptime (ranging from minutes to hours to occasionally days), my system will freeze up randomly-ish. When it freezes, whatever was running will continue running (like in a game, the sound will continue to play. it's only frozen in-game once, though), but I won't be able to move the cursor or type anything. Numlock and all of that does not respond either. I'm unable to control alt delete out, so I'm forced to shut down manually.
My log file is attached. Allow me to express my gratitude towards anyone who takes their time to help me out in my minor situation. I appreciate it. And I believe that I've followed all instructions as per the "Please read this before posting....." thread. I see you have two antivirus programs installed (AVG, McAfee). Multiple antivirus programs can bog down your system, interfere with each other, and may even cause crashes. I highly recommend you remove one of them using the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Hi Deckard.
I've done what you said (uninstalled McAfee since it expired. Do you think that AVG Free is good enough to secure my system?), and I am still experiencing the same problem. Here's a new scan since I've uninstalled: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 9:40:00 PM, on 10/8/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Sygate\SPF\smc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\Stardock\SDMCP.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXPPS.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\progra~1\common~1\instal~1\update~1\issch.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\1.0.720.3640\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe C:\Program Files\Privoxy\privoxy.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe c:\program files\common files\installshield\updateservice\isuspm.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\agent.exe R1 - LOL. I've never seen 700k logfile of quarantined cookies before.
Let's run one more online scan and I think you'll be good to go.Please perform an BitDefender Online Scan using Internet Explorer. Once finished, click on the Details button to view the results. To the upper right of the results you will see an option saying "Click here to export the scan results". Please do so and save it to your desktop. Post the results of the scan with your next post along with one more HijackThis log after it's finished. Also let me know how your computer is behaving now.

Okay. I Accidentally closed the BitDefender Online Scanner without saving a log file. No files were found, though, that were shown to me.

The POST and everything takes like 5 seconds, and then Windows takes about 7 minutes to boot up completely. THe audio that plays when Windows gets past the certain point is hella choppy, and everything runs really really sluggishly. There aren't any non-SYSTEM files running that are unsafe, I believe. This is really really really pissing me off, by the way. I can't understand why this is happening. It is still freezing/locking up every once and a while (it likes to do it while I'm gaming on some very low-resource games, like StarCraft), and often times audio is choppy.Help is once again very appreciated! |

I don't know what could be causing your computer to exhibit the symptoms you describe, but the experts in the XP Forum might. Make sure you let them know you've been checked out by us and given a clean bill of health.
Well done, your logs are clean! Any more issues? If not, you should be good to go but we still have a few items we'd like to address. Reset hidden/system files and folders
Reset System Restore
Microsoft Updates It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by malware. Using Internet Explorer, please go to Microsoft's Windows Update and download all of the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection. Please ensure that you have already patched your system against these recent critical exploits: Enable Windows Auto Update:
Malware Prevention This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. You might want to read Tony Klein's "How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?". At the minimum, you need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard to prevent spyware intrusions. I also recommend IE-Spyad, which places over 4,000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, thus helping prevent attempts to re-infect your system. All of these have no-strings-attached free versions available. However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use but often have malware in them. Two more articles you may want to read at your leisure are "KRC Anti-Spyware Tutorial" and "Making Internet Explorer Safer". The following is a list of free software we recommend: Antivirus AV software should be updated at least once a week for optimum protection. Here are some free AV programs available for personal use. NOTE: Do not install more than one AV program because they will conflict with each other. Only pick one.
Firewalls A good firewall is the first-line of defense for your computer and will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you are unfamiliar with how a firewall works, you can read "Understanding and Using Firewalls". Here are some free firewalls available for personal use:
These programs actively watch your computer for possible malware-related changes and help prevent them. You can run more than one of these at a time.Passive Malware Prevention Tools These programs configure your computer to prevent known malware-related changes. You can have more than one of these at a time and they take up minimal resources.
Using an alternative browser can help prevent malware from being installed without your knowledge, but may not work on all websites.Alternative Miscellaneous Here are some alternatives that are worth looking into if you use their features:
Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
