Altnet

Hi,
I hope someone can help with this. I routinely run AdAware Professional, PC Tools Registry Mechanic and SpyBot and have McAfee Security Centre installed but on running Regedit notice that my registry still has entries for malware - in particular Altnet. Is there any danger in deleting these entries from the registry or is there any other way I can get rid of them?
Many thanks,
Pilot

Altnet

Hi,
I hope this is the right place to post an HJT log.
In your guide you say be specific about the problem but I'm not sure what it is. My system is running very slowly. If I leave my machine unattended for any time, when I try to restart it, nothing happens and the only way I can get it going again is by switching off and on again. I know I have some malware on my machine but I can't get rid of it. In particular, Altnet is firmly established in my Registry. I routinely run AdAware Professional, PC Tools Registry Mechanic, SpyBot and McAfee Security Centre. AdAware shows Altnet as being removed, SpyBot only removes it after a roboot and McAfee doesn't even mention it, but after every reboot, Altnet is still there in my Registry. I don't know if this is what is causing my problems but it's driving me crazy. Any help you can give would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Pilot.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
It occurs there as an entry under \Software. It also turns up as AltnetDM in Software\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache

Yes, if you're comfortable tripping around in the registry, those can be removed.

Before doing any registry work, always back it up!

Your link to Symantec led to Windows support which recommended using All Programs\accessories\system tools\backup. Unfortunately Backup isn't listed in system tools!! Instead I used export from within Regedit, saving a copy of the registry to desktop. I highlighted the Altnet key in Software and pressed delete. I was asked if I wanted to delete this key and all its subfolders. I pressed the OK button and got the response "Cannot delete Altnet. Error while deleting key" It did, however let me delete the second occurence of AltnetDM in ARPCache.
Regards,
Pilot

Well, yes, for the full registry backup, that's correct. My bad. I intended you to use the single key instructions on that page.
  1. Right click on the said entry & select [Permissions....]
  2. Select Full Control & click [Apply]
  3. Click on the [Advanced] button
  4. In the Permissions tab, tick "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects"
  5. Click [OK] & answer [YES] to the ensuing prompt
  6. Click [OK] again to exit the permissions page
  7. Right click on the entry & select [Delete]

Hi,
I followed your instructions but Regedit wouldn't let me set permissions.
I've attached a screenshot of the dialogue boxes. I hope I've done it right

Pilot, rather than have two threads for the same issue, I've merged them.

Let's see what we can do to help you....

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • See this link for a tutorial

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat by right-clicking on the link, and choosing Save As. Save it to your desktop, or somewhere you can find it easily.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Ad-Aware's AdWatch

Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable AdWatch:
  • Open AdAware SE.
  • Go to AdWatch User Interface.
  • Go to Tools and Preferences.
  • At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
  • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
  • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
  • Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.
  • Unless they are turned off they could interfere with the fix by HijackThis.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

  • Install Ewido Anti-spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido anti-spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and install CleanUp!
NOTE: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it! If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64, but you can download & run this tool to find out for sure.....http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...p_whichcpu.exe

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Click START…RUN…Type in regedit. Make sure just “My Computer” is showing in the left pane and click..FILE….EXPORT…and save a copy somewhere in case you make a mistake. Now navigate to each of the following keys and delete the file/folder/entry I highlighted in RED

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ Altnet

If any of the above registry keys are giving you problems deleting, right click on them and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. Then try deleting the entry again. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to log-off/reboot at the end, if it does please do so.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Restart in normal mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on See report then click Save report
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Hijack This and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Hi Tetonbob,
I've run in to a few problems.
I got as far as running Regedit but then had the same problem I reported in my other thread. That is I couldn't delete Altnet even though permissions were set as instructed. (Did you see the screen shot I attached to the other thread? I got the same response.) Worse than that; when I left Regedit I clicked on Cleanup as instructed and it deleted my McAfee Security Centre so I am now unprotected. I won't do anything else until I hear from you again.
Regards,
Pilot.

Further to my last message, I can see what I've done wrong. I'll do a system restore and start again.

Pilot.

Hi again,
I've rerun all your instructions and everything went OK til I got to Panda ActiveScan. I'd disabled McAfee so Panda was able to download the ActiveX program. I filled in all the necessary details, Country, email etc., and a window opended to say ActiveScan had started. Three blue buttons kept incrementing to show something was happening, but the progress button at the bottom stayed firmly on 0%. It showed the time remaining as approx 30,000 seconds. This number kept going up and down but even so it wasn't going anywhere and 10 hours!! Obviously something has gone wrong. Shall I start from scratch again. Incidentally, Ewido wasn't able to remove Altnet. I've attached the log below.
Many thanks,
Pilot.

Hi Tetonbob,
So many things seem to have changed and/or gone wrong since I first posted my HJT log that I thought it might be better to post a new one. TeaTimer and AdWatch were turned off when I ran it.
Thanks for your help so far.
Regards,
Pilot

I do see some items in your Add/Remove which should be dealt with while we're working.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8 - http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

-------------------------------------

Can you tell me about the program Search Enhancer? Is it something you've intentionally installed?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Copy and paste the following into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet]
Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. It should look like this: Close Notepad.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

O2 - BHO: ohb Class - {5ED7D3DE-6DBE-4516-8712-01B1B64B7057} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchTool\nspC9.dll

Close HijackThis now.

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

Restart in normal mode.

Go here and do the BitDefender online virus scan.
  • Click "I Agree" to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Leave the scanning options at default and press "Click here to scan" to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished.
  • When the scan is finished, click on "Click here to export the scan results"
  • Save the report to your desktop then come back here and post it in your next reply along with a new Hijack This log

Also let me know about the registry merge.
