Good Morning,
The results so far:
Control Panel wouldn't let me delete any of the J2SE Update entries but I've downloaded and installed Update 9.
I haven't a clue what Search Enhancer is. It's not something I've installed.
I created and ran the "delete.reg" file but Altnet is still there!

Well, you have some instructions per my PM. Once you've tried all that, let me know how you get on. As I said, the Altnet key seems to be an orphan, which makes it unwelcome, but not particularly malicious.

Since you don't know what Search Enhancer is, please uninstall it.

Make sure TeaTimer and Adwatch are both disabled.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

Close HijackThis now.

Oh, about Panda scan...if Adwatch is active at the time, Panda won't load. Although it usually stops the popup window from opening, which it did for you...hmmm. Can you try it once again? First, uninstall Panda Active Scan from your Add/Remove panel, and re-do the instructions.

Don't spend more than 20 minutes waiting (assuming you're on broadband) for it to work, if it still stalls, something is amiss. Sometimes these things just hiccup, and if you run it again, it works.

Post any results from scans you've performed, and a new HJT log in your next reply.

Hi Tetonbob,
I've run HJT and deleted the entry you indicated. Panda has opened the Active Scan window but it's still blank after 30 minutes. According to Task Manager it's still running and not "not responding" so perhaps I've not given it enough time although I am on 8MB broadband. I guess it must be about 9 pm where you are. It's 2 am here here so I'm going to pack in for the night and leave Panda running and see if anything has happened by morning.

Hi Tetonbob,

I've removed Search Enhancer and rerun SpyHunter (the prog that Joefireline suggested) but Altnet is still firmly in my registry. Looks like I'm stuck with it, but at least all the other malware seems to have gone :-)

OK, Pilot, let's give this a whirl....

Download and install Registrar Lite

Open Registrar Lite, and in the address bar, paste the following:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Altnet

Then press Enter.

Right click on the highlighted folder named Altnet, and select Properties.

Next, click on the button that says Take Ownership.

Next, click on the button that says Permissions.

Highlight your account name, and make sure that Full Control is ticked. If it was not, tick it, and click Apply.

Click Permissions, Click the Advanced button

Place a checkmark next to the following:

"Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects..."

Click Apply.

Close the properties sheet.

You should now be able to right click on the folder Altnet, and select Delete.

If this still fights, apply the same tactics (Ownership and Permissions) to the subfolders Dashboard and Settings. Delete Settings first, then Dashboard, then Altnet.

Let me know.

Since we've got Reglite on the machine, and this O2 seems to be sticky, let's use it on that one as well.

Paste this into the address bar:

Press Enter.

Right click on the folder, {223CAE27-BA75-C18D-D334-56319C228BAA} and select Properties.

Take Ownership, Set permissions to full as before.

Right click on the folder, {223CAE27-BA75-C18D-D334-56319C228BAA}, and select delete.

Post a new HJT log. This is another orphan, so it's doing no harm, but I'd like to see a clean log before sending you off.

How is your system behaving now, please?

Reset hidden/system files and folders

• Click Start.
• Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• Select the View tab.
• Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
• Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
• Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point

• click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
• select the System Restore Tab
• tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
• click Apply
• then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update

• Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
• tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
• Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
• Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

• SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
    After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
• SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  
• SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
  Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  
• AD-AWARE
  Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  
• Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.

  Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software
  
  
• IE-SPYAD - IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
    From within the folder, double-click install.bat
    Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
    Then return to the main menu.
    Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain
  
  
  
• MVPS HOST FILE
  The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
  • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
  • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
    Extract All from the menu.
    
  • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
    "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    
  • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    
  • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
  
  
  
• ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
  It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

I installed all the programs you suggested after which my machine ran very slowly with several programs failing to respond. I then tried to reinstall Nero. My machine locked up and I couldn't even get in to Safe Mode. I managed to get in via command mode and went back to the restore point I set up this morning. Everything seems OK now, but I'm wary about trying too much. Should I install one program at a time and see what happens?

Further to my previous post, everything seems to be working OK, but it's so slow. Working with my machine based programs is like being on dial-up, if you know what I mean, and I've got a pretty fast processor. I've run all my standard security programs (Registy Mechanic, SpyBot, AdAware, McAfee) and they are not reporting anything, but something is wrong. Would you mind having a look at another HJT log? Don't rush, cos I'm going to bed. I've spent too many nights over this problem already and I must get up early and do some real work :-)

Pilot, apologies, but that's a standard reply all users get from me. I should have edited for you, as you already have ample protection for scanners.

First, stop Ewido from running at Startup. All you need to do is right click the System Tray icon, and uncheck Start with Windows. It will not run unless you ask it to now. That should help considerably.

What else did you install?

SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, IESpyad and the hosts file take no system resources. These are excellent additions to a multi-layered security approach.

Other than those, your previously existing programs should keep you well protected.

So you know, McAfee is a big resource drain. Look at all the services it has running (O23s), and all the startup items (O4s).

There's no malware in your HJT log.
