Exclamation Corrupt Norton, almost all webpages are redirected to microsoft.com
First off, my computer just got a TON of trojans because i was foolish and downloaded a patch for some software from a 3rd party site.... i ran the patch....and boom! computer is inundated with trojans, spyware, you name it. So i cant update my service pack 1 version of windows because i cant go anywhere except for windows.com and some other random pages like google. If i try and go to any of the links on the windows site, IE crashes. I downloaded firefox, and used a proxy server, which allowed me to access more webpages so i was able to update virus definitions. problem is.... norton (internet security 2006) is still corrupted... it still detects and removes viruses, but its "home window" wont open so i cant scan, create firewall rules, etc. I have used avast antivirus, adaware SE, and spybot to clean up, except now avast is infected and wont open or scan just like norton....so im pretty screwed. If you have a way to let me get my windows version updated, let me know, but keep posting the directions on what to do with my HJT log as though i had already completed that. I am posting this message from the "infected" computer using my firefox browser (internet explorer cannot navigate here without crashing).

A couple of notes...
first and most importantly...my computer hangs for a long time on the "windows is starting up" screen. It used to not even start up once it got there, but now it thinks for about 5 minutes...then decides to load. This happens when booting into safe mode and regular mode. spybot finds a Haxdoor-H every time it scans...it says it removes it...but its there every time i reboot and rescan!

sorry i know im not supposed to reply to my own messages, but this may be important to you.

REGEDIT.EXE will not open, it was infected with a virus, and now it fails to open
"The Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application."
i googled this problem, and i found that changing the file extension to .com or .scr would fix it.... but it didnt. This is a nightmare!

Hello randomrandom and welcome to TSF,

You are correct that you have quite a few nasties aboard--we'll have to go after them in stages, so bear with me.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

***************************************************

I realize you installed additional Anti Virus programs in an attempt to clean your system, and while it may seem to be added protection for you, more than 1 Anti Virus can cause conflicts and confusion between the AV programs as well as system instability.

**Please choose and run only 1 AV program and uninstall the other via the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel--if you are able to at this point.

***************************************************

Download haxfix.exeand save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
  • Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"
  • Click "Next"
  • When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
  • Click "Finish"
A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:

1. Make logfile
2. Run auto fix
3. Run manual fix
E. Exit Haxfix
  • Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing "Enter"
  • Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt > (c:haxfix.txt)
  • Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread along with a new HijackThis log.

regedit is useless....
Haxfix cant fix anything because my regedit.exe file is unable to be used! "regedit.exe - Applicatoin error" "The applicatoin failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application"

See if this will run properly for you. If it does, regedit should be restored:

Download AlcanShorty from here.
  • Click the download button below and agree to download the fix.
  • Download Alcanshorty to your desktop.
  • DoubleClick alcanshorty_en.exe and click install
  • This will create a new folder on your desktop called alcanshorty_en
  • Open that folder and doubleclick Run.bat
  • Once the fix starts, your icons and desktop will disappear, this is normal.

Make sure you have a working internet connection. In case your firewall gives an alert, don't block it,
because alcanshorty needs to download some additional files to let the tool run properly.
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Try to run Haxfix again-- Option 1 only--do NOT use any of the options to fix yet. We need to generate the log first.

I'll also need a new HijackThis log.

Im posting two logs, the first log is HJT in safe mode. The second log is HJT in normal mode. In safe mode, AVG does not detect any viruses with its resident shield...but in normal mode it detectes the file WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/qz.exe to be a backdoor trojan.

Ok, this is what I'd like you to do.

Do a search for another copy of regedit.exe--there should be another copy in system32\dllcache

Please note that the proper file size for regedit.exe is 134,144

If found, rename C:\windows\regedit.exe to regedit.old

Wait about 5 seconds & then refresh to see if windows regenerated a fresh copy.

If not, simply copy regedit.exe over from the dllcache

------------------------------------

In the event the dllcache is also infected, delete both copies and invoke Windows File Protection:

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in or copy/paste sfc /scannow (there is a space between sfc and /)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. If any problems are found, you will be prompted to insert the Windows XP install disc so have it handy.

Download and run Blacklight

Start the program and accept the license. Note that you must have local administrative privileges to run the program.

Click Scan. BlackLight will use Windows Explorer (the desktop process) to scan for hidden items. Your anti-virus software or personal firewall might display a warning that says Blacklight (blbeta.exe) is trying to manipulate the Windows Explorer process (explorer.exe). If you want to continue the scan, you should allow BlackLight to do this.

When it finishes, click Next. Then click on Close.

BlackLight beta would create a log file "fsbl-<date-and-time>.log". By default, the log file is in the same directory as the executable. Please post the log along with a new HijackThis log.

havent run blacklight...but theres progress!
regedit is uninfected! after i restored the protected files, regedit.exe works! HOORAY!!!!!!! thanks!

so thats one small step for me, but it IS a step. I am about to do the blacklight scan...after i finish my victory dance...jk...

Ok, finish your dance, but this system will still be far from clean.

Blacklight will take out most of the Haxdoor infection--if not all of it. After you've run Blacklight, run Haxfix Option 1 again and post that log here, along with the results of the Blacklight and a new HijackThis log so I can determine exactly where we are.

Ok, let's sink our teeth into this.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

***************************************************

Downloads:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) and extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Do not run it yet.


Download combofix **Important** Place combofix on your desktop.**


Download Ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 trial of the program
  1. Once you have downloaded Ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close Ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.


Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet. (Not Recommended for XP64). *WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.


Finally, using Internet Explorer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat.

If you are using Firefox, right click the above link and choose ‘Save As’. Save it to your desktop.

Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Open this folder program files > haxfix and double click on fix.bat (or double click on fix.bat desktop icon)
  • Close all other open windows since this step requires a reboot
  • Select option 2. Run auto fix by typing 2 and then pressing "Enter"
If an infection is found, you'll get a message to close all other open windows.
  • Close all open windows except the red dos window from haxfix and then press "Enter"
  • The computer will reboot
  • After reboot a logfile will open > (c:\haxfix.txt)
  • Post the contents of that logfile in your next reply.

Go to <<Start>> then <<Run>> then paste in the single line command then click OK

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear

5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Click 'Fix Checked' and close HijackThis.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
*Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Click OK.

Delete the following Files if they still exist.

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : " Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question " Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter.


A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Clean out your Temporary Internet files.

*WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! or move them to a permanent location.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the "Temporary Files" and uncheck the box for "Scan drives for file matching" if it's checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Do NOT reboot/logoff when prompted.

Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web> Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present:
· "Security Info"
· "Warning Message"
· "Security Desktop"
· "Warning Homepage"
· "Desktop Uninstall"

Also make sure the 'Lock desktop items' box is unticked. Click OK, and then Click Apply, then OK.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while Ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch Ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
    Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.
**Ewido is compatible with most AV and anti-spyware products, and the free version will continue to be useful as a second anti-malware scanner.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter. Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Once you reboot......

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and wants you to buy the program for removal as we will address this later.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report

Run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Thumbs Down more problems....sigh....
Ewido anti-spyware is not installing...it gets to "guard.exe" and it just sits there.... ive rebooted and tried reinstalling over and over, but its still messed up! . and now when i shut down my computer windows hangs on the "saving your settings" screen and i have to do the "hold the power button" method of turning off.... This feels like a :4-diss3:

Can you do a System Restore to just before you started installing Ewido over and over? Bear in mind that if you restore prior to 9/26, you'll have to re-do the instructions I gave you on 9/25 to fix regedit.exe again.

nvm, it decided to install perfectly in safe mode all-of-the-sudden~ ill post the logs after im done installing all of the other programs, oh and the link to combofix is broken, but i downloaded it from another site. You might want to fix that for next time you post it.

Everything but Pandascan
Ok two things...
1) My computer still does not shut down without hanging on "saving your settings" screen during the shutdown sequence, forcing me to cut the power to my PC. And no, i cannot do a system restore because i disabled it due to the fact that it was keeping/restoring the viruses on my computer.
2) My internet explorer brower does not navigate to ANY pages now. So i cannot perform a pandascan. My firefox browser works just fine, but it does not support the pandascan, so thats useless to my cause.

I'll also need you to run another scan with HijackThis from Normal Mode and post that here as well. (All scanning with HijackThis should be done from Normal Mode when possible.)

THE BAD............
Still can't shut down normally, and now i cannot open "My Network Places" or the Control Panel without explorer.exe crashing as soon as i open it.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions.

Combofix did not run properly. We'll run it again in a moment--first, I'd like to try to get rid of one of the AV's.

Click Start>All Programs>AVG Free Edition
Select 'Uninstall AVG Free Edition for Windows'

Regardless of whether or not the uninstall was successful, please continue with the following instructions

----------------------------------------------

Run combofix again--please ensure you are running it from Normal Mode.



Go to <<Start>> then <<Run>> then paste in the single line command then click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /v d3dishsv wmneprfl dxmamcia

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.


Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
