OK
Her are the smitfraud text and HJT logs (hjt ran as sgc.exe)
I had not corrected the HJT log fixes as above while researching so they still show the F3 and 015 entries.

The Option 1 scan does not take very long--I'll be around for approximately another 40 minutes.

Hi Five,

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

***************************************************

Right click on this link DelO15Domains.inf and choose Save As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards.
NOTE: This script will delete any sites you may have added to the Trusted Sites. So if you want them back, you have to add them back to the Trusted Sites again.

---------------------------------

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

-----------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they still exist:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Search_URL = (value not set)
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=

Click 'Fix Checked' and close HijackThis.

-----------------------------------

I see you already have CleanUp and Ewido 4.0 installed. We'll run them now.

*WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! or move them to a permanent location.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the "Temporary Files" and uncheck the box for "Scan drives for file matching" if it's checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Do NOT reboot/logoff when prompted.

------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch Ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted-- Please ensure it is set to Quarantine and then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close ewido.

------------------------------------------------

Reboot into Normal Mode.

------------------------------------------------

Please post a fresh HijackThis log (sgc.exe) along with the Ewido results.

ooooppss

sorry I L clicked the file you sent "deldomains" by mistake:
it says it will delete all restricted and trusted zone entries: do I want to do that?

Regards

Edit I use FF as default browser: and am doing so now: do you want me to change to IE for purposes of this clean-up?

Thx

We'd only need to run the DelO15 domains if Spybot is still finding those entries. Before I advise on running that tool, had you carried out any of my steps before running Spybot again?

Ok, then let's hold off on the DelO15Domains.

Complete the other steps I gave you, and provide a new HijackThis log.

Any thing there?
I see the F3 entries are recreated!
The 015 entries are still there.

Another spybot scan shows nothing unusual.

Thanks for helping with this protracted process Ried.

Hi Five,

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

***************************************************

Please disable the following program(s) as they may be interfering with the registry changes we are trying to enact. You may re-enable them when we are through cleaning your system:

Spywareguard
  • Right click the running icon of Spywareguard in the system tray to open the program.
  • Then go to Menu, File, and choose Exit. It will automatically restart at next boot.
Prevx:
  • Right click on the Prevx icon in your system tray at the bottom-right corner of your screen and choose "Show Management Console".
  • On the Management Console click the Protection Level drop-down menu. You will see three levels:
    • Maximum
    • Off
    • User Defined

  • To disable all protection set the level to Off. You will receive a prompt asking "You are about to change your security settings. Do you wish to continue?" Click Yes.
  • Click the X on the upper right hand corner to exit the Management console.

***************************************************

Let's try this again.

Reboot into Safe Mode.

---------------------------------------

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries:

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: '@ivt' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Intranet Zone (HKLM)
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'file' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'ftp' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'https' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)

Click 'Fix Checked' and close HijackThis.

-----------------------------------

Reboot your system into Normal Mode.

-----------------------------------

Run a scan with HijackThis--if those O15 entries have returned, please do the following:

Download: ResetProtocolDefaults.reg
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/Rese...olDefaults.reg

Again, make sure you've disabled Spyware Guard and Prevx.

Locate "ResetProtocolDefaults.reg"
Right-click and select: Merge (Ok the prompt)

-----------------------------------

Reboot your system.

-----------------------------------

Run another scan with HijackThis and post the log here please.

Fyi
The current version of Prevx: PrevX1 pro the "shut down" is;
Open Console (R click on systray icon) select "Shut down PrevX" from menu.

Thankyou
I was wondering whether there was something blocking the HJT fix or recreating the 015 wrong entries.

I'll let you know if there are recurrences.
Thankyou again.

Hi Five,

In this case I don't believe anything was recreating the entries--your active protection was merely blocking the changes HijackThis was trying to carry out. HijackThis makes changes to the registry and SpywareGuard and Prevx monitor registry changes and weren't allowing them to go through.

SpywareBlaster does not monitor the registry as such. It monitors Active X downloads to your system, as well as known 'bad' websites to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.

Launch SpywareBlaster and click on the Internet Explorer tab at the top. You'll see the list of 'bad' ActiveX's it will watch for and block. Click on the Restrictions and Firefox tabs and you'll see the list of known bad sites it will block as well.

As you already have Spyware Guard, SpywareBlaster and Prevx, Webroot and Ewido 4.0, the only other tool I would add to your layers of protection would be the following:

Download IE-SPYAD.EXE to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. This is a self-extracting .ZIP file, and save it to your desktop.

Once downloaded, double-click on it to extract the files inside (default dir is C:\IE-SPYAD)
Now navigate to C:\ie-spyad. Double click to open it.
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list, by typing 2
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain, by typing 4

FYI--Ewido has been changed to AVG A/S. It's best to update the program now before they discontinue the updates for Ewido.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on " Recommended actions" and then select " Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

I would suggest scanning your system with AVG A/S weekly. It's best to scan from Safe Mode:

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions" **Please ensure it is set to Quarantine
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.
**AVG Anti-Spyware is compatible with most AV and anti-spyware products, and the free version will continue to be useful as a second anti-malware scanner.

*********************************************

Now that we're through here, let's flush out and create a new Restore Point:

Create a new System Restore point
Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
* Select the System Restore Tab
* Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Click Apply
* Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
This will prevent any reinfection from previous restore points.

Shall we consider this thread resolved?

Already have IE spy-ad in place ! ( not updated in a while)
I keep spywareblaster very up to date: love that javacools !!

That is one of the reasons I was a bit shirty about any malware: thought I had a pretty locked up system Anyway lesson learnt

I have ditched Webroot SS: became a PITA:
http://www.castlecops.com/f163-Spysweeper.html
Lots of pissed off peeples there, me one of them
I saw one of the services still running will get to that soon.

PrevX is new for me: no objective test that I can find except older test from kareldjag. Subjectively everybody feels that it may work and they have the Grom removal tool. Must have someone good on their side.

Thx again
Resolved, in a glorious fashion.
Did you get PM? I was having some probs sending.
