hijacker?
Hey,
My homepage is currently stuck at this address: http://securityresponse.symantec.com.../fix_homepage/ I can't change it to anything else. I'm not sure if it's a problem with Norton, or an actual HiJacker. I do have Norton 2006 running, with a full system scan it found nothing, along with Spybot, Ad-Aware, and CWShredder. When I try to manually change my homepage back to yahoo, a Norton window pops up with a warning about blocking my homepage from changing. So, it won't let me change it. I tried to disable Norton's 'homepage protection', yet it still doesn't allow me to change it to yahoo or anything else. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot! Here's a copy of my HiJackThis! log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 7:07:53 PM, on 9/20/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\IWP\NPFMntor.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\sdhelp.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\MsPMSPSv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\PANICW~1\POP-UP~1\PSFree.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Console\NSCSRVCE.EXE C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Documents and Settings\tony\Desktop\HardDrive Switch\EXE Files\nuthin\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://securityresponse.symantec.com...r/fix_homepage O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {A8F38D8D-E480-4D52-B7A2-731BB6995FDD} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Zone Labs Client] "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSBkgdUpdate] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Scansoft Shared\SSBkgdUpdate\SSBkgdupdate.exe -Embedding -boot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSC_UserPrompt] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\UsrPrmpt.exe" O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PopUpStopperFreeEdition] "C:\PROGRA~1\PANICW~1\POP-UP~1\PSFree.exe" O8 - Extra context menu item: E&xport to Microsoft Excel - res://C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE/3000 O9 - Extra button: Research - {92780B25-18CC-41C8-B9BE-3C9C571A8263} - C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\REFIEBAR.DLL O9 - Extra button: AIM - {AC9E2541-2814-11d5-BC6D-00B0D0A1DE45} - C:\Program Files\AIM\aim.exe O20 - Winlogon Notify: WgaLogon - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WgaLogon.dll O23 - Service: Adobe LM Service - Adobe Systems - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe Systems Shared\Service\Adobelmsvc.exe O23 - Service: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe O23 - Service: Symantec Event Manager (ccEvtMgr) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe O23 - Service: Symantec Settings Manager (ccSetMgr) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe O23 - Service: InstallDriver Table Manager (IDriverT) - Macrovision Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver\11\Intel 32\IDriverT.exe O23 - Service: LiveUpdate - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\LIVEUP~1\LUCOMS~1.EXE O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Service (navapsvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Firewall Monitor Service (NPFMntor) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\IWP\NPFMntor.exe O23 - Service: Norton Protection Center Service (NSCService) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Console\NSCSRVCE.EXE O23 - Service: NVIDIA Display Driver Service (NVSvc) - NVIDIA Corporation - C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe O23 - Service: Symantec AVScan (SAVScan) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe O23 - Service: PC Tools Spyware Doctor (SDhelper) - PC Tools - C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\sdhelp.exe O23 - Service: Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe O23 - Service: SPBBCSvc - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe O23 - Service: TrueVector Internet Monitor (vsmon) - Zone Labs, LLC - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe O23 - Service: VNC Server Version 4 (WinVNC4) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\RealVNC\VNC4\WinVNC4.exe" -service (file missing) |

Did you follow the instructions on that link? You should have an option to allow you to set your own page when the Norton Popup opens.
http://securityresponse.symantec.com.../fix_homepage/ If that doesn't work..... Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://securityresponse.symantec.com...r/fix_homepage Close HijackThis now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reset your homepage from the IE menubar via Tools>Internet Options Let me know if this helps.

Yah, i've done the usual in 'Tools'/'Internet Options' for changing a homepage. but, NOrton keeps coming up with a message saying somethings trying to change my homepage, so it doesn't let me. So, then i turned that option off in Norton, so it won't block homepage changes. Yet, it still does this. Then i uninstalled Norton, and it still won't let me change my homepage...
I deleted that key you said in HiJackThis! yet it is immediately still there when i rescan. THanks! |

Right click on http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs and choose Save As...Save it to your Desktop. Double click on 'Silent Runners' to run it. Choose 'No' at the prompt. It will create a file called 'Startup Programs' (followed by your computer name and current date) on your desktop. Do NOT open it yet. Wait until you get the prompt 'All Done'. Then open up that file and post all the contents here in your next post. If you receive a warning message about scripts, choose to allow it to run.
Also post a new HJT log.

Please try these steps as laid out by Symantec
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...=docid&seg=hho Even if you have tried something similar, do this step by step. Plus....I thought you said you uninstalled Norton. Did you reinstall it? It is still evident in your HijackThis log.

yah, sorry, i did reinstall it after it still didn't help. OK, tried the website instructions you gave me. When i tried to manually change my homepage to 'www.yahoo.com' under 'Tools/Internet Options', i clicked on the homepage button to take me there, and Norton popped up saying that it blocked an attempt to change my homepage. It offered to change the homepage to the 'www.yahoo.com' that i had typed in and it 'OK'. I then hit the homepage button again, and it just reloads that stupid Norton symantec webpage again, like i didn't change anything.

Well, I'm pretty certain this is some sort of Norton mystery. I'm not very fond of Norton.
This is simply the latest reason I have.Let's try this a couple more ways... First, go through those steps again,(be sure to do it exactly as it appears) but this time, have it set you to a blank page. See if that helps. If still no joy, since you've already uninstalled Norton once.... Disconnect from the internet. Pull the plug so you're not online while unprotected. Uninstall it again. Then restart your system. Then fix that entry with HJT. Then reinstall and see what happens. I'm reasonable certain this is an issue with Norton, and not malware. If these ideas don't get it done, you may want to ask in our Security and Firewalls forum.

alright, i tried the blank page, as well as all other options to choose, and they do absolutely nothing. I then, uninstalled Norton again, and ran HiJackThis! and fixed the entry, tried to change my homepage and the same thing happened. It wouldn't change from the symantec page.
THanks |

bumping, any other suggestions or do you still think this may be Norton-related?
However, that's odd that I can no longer change my homepage, even after uninstalling Norton. When it's uninstalled, it still keeps the same norton site as my homepage, just without the Norton program notification window pop up mentioning the blocking of a homepage change. |

Let's try something else...
Fix this entry with HJT if it still exists: R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://securityresponse.symantec.com...r/fix_homepage Then, Go to Start>Control Panel>Internet Options>Programs tab. Click on the Reset Web Settings button. Click Yes at the next prompt. Make sure the Also reset my Home Page box is ticked. Then, post a new HJT log. One more question....is your version of ZoneAlarm current with updates? A recent update has corrected a bug where some users could not reset their home page. http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/fre...seHistory.html Should be ZoneAlarm version 6.5.737.000 New and improved features in ZoneAlarm version 6.5.737.000 * Fixes a crash that was discovered in some cases on international versions. * Fixes an issue where some ZoneAlarm users couldn’t change their default home page. To find out what version you have installed, click on Overview Tab, then Product info. Let me know how you get along.
