I didn't notice anything wrong with my computer until I went to reboot it the other day...when I did...the welcome screen was different. My computer would not let me change it back because of a file called rtlgina3.dll (that was the error message) and it said to delete it. My computer will not let me delete it. Thanks again for your assistance.... |

Very good Alissa. Now please follow the next set of instructions very carefully:
Upload this file c:\windows\system32\rtlgina2.dll to http://virusscan.jotti.org and report back what it found. At the top of the window you should see "File to Upload & scan" and a blank box. Copy and paste the the full path of rtlgina3.dll into the box. Then click "submit". When it is finished, please copy and paste the information listed under "Service" and "Scanner Results" here.

If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service. Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita. Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware. Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample. Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception. Read more about this in our privacy policy. If you do not want your files to be distributed, please do not send them at all. Hi Alissa,
The file you pointed in your first post was named "rtlgina3.dll", with which you were having some problems. Though when I asked you to search the path of this file, you pointed out "c:\windows\system32\rtlgina2.dll"- note the difference of the file names. Are you sure that you searched and located properly? Or, the first mention of rtlgina3.dll was a typing error as the file scanned was rtlgina2.dll. and please clarify which file name is being displayed in the error message. If the error is not a typo error then I suggest that you search for the file again and upload the file for a virus scan to Jotti as I instructed already. Look for a complete match of the filename. **Note** The file name is rtlgina3.dll

Hello Alissa
.Well done, your logs are clean! Reset hidden/system files and folders
Updating Java and Clearing Cache
System Restore To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK. Turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK. This will create a new Restore Point. MICROSOFT UPDATES It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection. SPYWARE PREVENTION SPEECH This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read TonyKlein's How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?. You need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard, to prevent spyware intrusions. IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. All of the above have good free versions available. However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them. More information and downloads are available at the following links: Spyware Blaster Spyware Guard IE-Spyad FIREWALLS I suggest that you use a Third Party Firewall to protect your computer better. Using a firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice: Now Alissa, let me offer you some clarification regarding your real problem related with rtlgina2.dll file. First of all this is not a malware and neither related to, so cheers ; and if you pay serious attention to my above advices, you will be well protected against them in future. The problem stems from the fact that the file in question replaces original windows file msgina.dll. This msgina.dll allows user to 'fast switching between user accounts' and controls the logon/welcome screen. As this file is replaced you may face quite some problems regarding the above mentioned funtionalities [though you did not point out what exact problem/s you are facing, I assume that to be related with above mentioned functionalities]. You have received this file from your Netgear Wireless Adapter pack. Now to solve the problem try the following. Download a tool named XP FixLogon.exe from Here. You can find out the basic usage instructions in the given link. Follow those instructions and see whethere your problem is solved or not. You may also refer to following liks for more informations: Link 1 Link 2 Now if any of the above does not solve your problem, then I would strongly suggest that you post your problem in detail in our networking forum to get more specialised advices. Happy surfing .
