Cry A warning icon says i have spyware/malware but...

Hi guys,

But windows defender and ad aware says theres no spyware on my pc.

How do i make the warning icon go away? Is it really a spyware warning?

:( And i just got this laptop. Would suck if it got infected so early after i just got it :(

Plz help. Total noob when it comes to spyware/malware

Thank you
PS: A warnin balloon keeps popping up telling me to "Click this balloon to download latest anti spyware" and there is also a new bar in my IE called "Protection Bar". The bar has links to anti spywares. How do i remove
it?

Edit: I just downloaded spybot and the TeaTimer function keeps saying theres some bad program in a certain folder called StrCodec is trying to do something. I know i did not download this StrCodec. But Windows wont let me delete this folder.

Hi winter,

Welcome to Tech Support Forum!

Please do this next.

  1. Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  2. Double-click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
  4. Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  5. Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  6. Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  7. At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch HijackThis.
  8. Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  9. Click Save log to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
  10. Click on "Edit -> Select All" then click on "Edit -> Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  11. Come back here to this thread and paste the log in your next reply.
  12. Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi winter,

You’re most welcome, winter.

OK, here’s what we do next.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:

To disable Spybot’s TeaTimer function:
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

NEXT:

BEFORE BEGINNING, Please read completely through the instructions below. Please also print these instructions or copy them to Notepad (or another word processor), and save it for easier reference. This is because we will be in Safe Mode during the fix and you won’t be able to access the Internet to view these instructions.

1. Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri).
  • Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your desktop.
  • Please do NOT run a scan yet!

NOTE : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

2. Please download CCleaner (freeware) from HERE.
  • Run the CCleaner installer.
  • During installation process, please UNCHECK "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar".
  • Please do NOT run a scan yet!

3. Please download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30-day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the setup program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need to run ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the "Shield" icon, then under the "Resident shield is" section change the "Active" status of ewido’s resident shield to "Inactive".
  • On the main screen select the "Update" icon, then under the "Manual update" section select the "Start update" button.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed (the progress bar will display "Update successful!") select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the "Settings" screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports:"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan".
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found".
  • Close ewido anti-spyware. Please do NOT run a scan yet!

4. Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Reboot your computer.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but just before the Windows icon appears, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the "Safe Mode" menu item, and then press "Enter".

5. Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select Option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process (if a reboot is required, please boot BACK into Safe Mode). A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

WARNING : Running Option #2 on a non-infected computer will remove your desktop background.

6. AFTER SmitfraudFix finishes (and after a reboot if required), please run CCleaner. (If a reboot is required, please boot BACK into Safe Mode)
  • Click the Windows tab.
  • Select the following:
    • Check everything under the Internet Explorer section.
    • Check everything under the Windows Explorer section.
    • Check everything under the System section.
    • Check ONLY Old Prefetch data under the Advanced section.
  • Next, click the Options icon, then click the Advanced button:
    • UNCHECK : "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours", click OK.
  • Next, click the Cleaner icon, then click the Run Cleaner button (bottom right), then Exit.

NOTE : Please do NOT use the Applications tab or the Issues icon. Keep to the Cleaner icon and the Windows tab.

7. Then please open ewido anti-spyware. (If a reboot is required, please boot BACK into Safe Mode)

IMPORTANT : Do NOT open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab. Click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select the "Apply all actions" button, ewido will then display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
    • Next select the "Save Report" button at the bottom.
    • Then select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it as a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important!).
  • Close ewido.

Then please REBOOT normally into Windows. Please post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread, along with the ewido report and a new HijackThis log.

It did clear the annoying pop ups and fake spyware notices.

Hi winter,

Yep, it is looking good. Well done!

OK, let’s clean up your system a bit more.

We need to disable your Windows Defender real-time protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

To disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

NEXT:

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan". Place a check (tick) next to the following entries (if present):

O1 - Hosts: 65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
O1 - Hosts: 65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net

Close ALL programs and browsers (including this one), leaving ONLY HijackThis open, then click "Fix checked".

Then please exit HijackThis.

NEXT:

Let's run an online scan to make sure we're not leaving anything behind.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner.
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK.
  • Now under select a target to scan:
    • Select My Computer.
  • This program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save Report As button.
    • In the File name: field, type kavscan.
    • In the Save as type: field, select Text file (*.txt).
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

NEXT:

Please reboot your computer normally into Windows, and then please post the log from the Kaspersky scan and a new HijackThis log.

How are things running now?

Hi winter,

I’m glad to hear that your system is running normally again.

There is only a minor infection showing in your Kaspersky scan. The other infected objects are in your system restore files. These are inactive and do not pose a danger to your system. As time goes by, your computer will create new system restore points, thusly automatically deleting these corrupted points.

OK, here’s what we do next.

Using Windows Explorer, please navigate to and delete the following FILES in BOLD (if they exist):

C:\Documents and Settings\Mohd Albakry\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\3Y5XV504\popup[1].htm

Please let me know if you encountered any problems finding or deleting the file.

NEXT:

Please download CCleaner (freeware) from here:
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/
  • Run the CCleaner installer.
  • During installation process, please UNCHECK "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar".
  • Once installed, run CCleaner and click the Windows tab.

NEXT:

Let's run another diagnostic scan to make sure we're not leaving anything behind.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

NEXT:

Please reboot your computer normally into Windows, and then please post the ComboFix log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi winter,

No worries, let's use this file/folder deletion utility to nuke that file:

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • From the main Killbox window, select:
    • "Delete on Reboot".
    • "All Files".
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Mohd Albakry\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\3Y5XV504\popup[1].htm

  • Return to Killbox, go to the "File" menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • This is pasted into the "Full Path of File to Delete" field.
  • There’s a little arrow (drop-down arrow) next to that field. If you expand it, the lines that you pasted must be there together (if the files are present!).
  • Click the button with the red circle and white X ("Delete File" button). Click "Yes" at the "Delete on Reboot" prompt. Click "No" at the "Pending Operations" prompt.

If your computer does not reboot automatically, please reboot it manually.

NOTE : If you receive a message such as, "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, CLICK HERE to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Please let me know how this goes.

Everything looks great --- your HijackThis log appears to be clean. :)

Please take some time reading this list; it is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Windows Updates (a must!)
It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. You can either click on the link above and bookmark the updates page, or open Internet Explorer, then go to the Tools menu -> Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

  • Firewall (a must!)
It is definitely a must have. Two good FREE versions are Outpost or ZoneAlarm.
Note: You must only use 1 (one) firewall at a time because if you have 2 or more firewalls running at the same time, they will conflict with each other and make your security less reliable. Please also remember to turn off Windows Firewall once you have installed a new firewall.

  • Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

  • SpywareBlaster
This is a great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

  • IE-SPYAD
This puts over 5000 sites in your IE Restricted Zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
    Tutorial: How to use!

  • Spybot - Search & Destroy
This is a very powerful tool that can search for and annihilate nasties that make it onto your system. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features for realtime protection.
    Tutorial: How to use!

  • Ad-Aware SE
This is another very powerful tool that searches for and kills nasties that infect your system. Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
    Tutorial: How to use!

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article How I got Infected in the First Place and this CastleCops article Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck! :D

Please reply to this thread one more time so that we can put this case as resolved and close it. Thank you.
