I followed the 5 step process

Hi

I am having trouble with pop up windows that keep appearing when using IE. The problem does not seem to happen when using mozilla.

Last Thursday, I clicked on a misrepresented link (stupid...i know) that led me to a site that started hammering me with some sort of virus. I use AVG virus scan and it immediatly caught it but as soon as I clicked "Heal" it popped up again. Then I see something saying that it is installing with a little progress bar going across. I pressed Ctrl Alt Del and closed all open IE windows...before the little progress bar was complete.

I immediatly updated definitons and ran a full virus scan with AVG. No virus found. I did the same with ADAWARE. It found a few cookies but nothing major.

So...somewhat relieved, I went back to work. However, the next time I went to the internet in IE, music started playing and after a few seconds a advertisement window would pop up. (Windows focus shifted to that window too.)

It took a few seconds after IE opened before the window popped up.

So I ran AVG and ADAWARE again and they found nothing.

At this point I ran windows update to see if any security updates would fix the problem. My system is now updated but not fixed.

That is when I found this site. I downloaded the 5 steps and followed them.

I updated all definitions for all programs and then booted into safe mode and ran the following:

AVG
ADAWARE and also the VX2 Add on
CWSHREDDER.

These turned up nothing.

I also ran Spybot Search and Destroy
This turned up 36 items which it told it to remove.
It said that they were successfully removed.

I rebooted back into normal mode and ran two online virus scans; Symantec and McAffee

The results of the Symantec scan are shown below:
201444 files scanned, 12 file(s) infected on your disk drives.

No viruses were detected in memory.

Your computer is free of known threats. Virus Detection does not check compressed files.

Your computer appears safe for now. For real-time protection from viruses, hackers and privacy threats, upgrade to Norton Internet Security™.

C:\Documents and Settings\Bill\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\file\Dummy.class-28c909f1-30c8a4d0.class is infected with Java.Nocheat

These results were a little confusing because first they say there is no virus in memory then they say there is.

I probably should not have done the next step...but I tracked down the 12 files that were shown in a specific path and deleted them.

Next I ran Mcaffee. Here are the results.

C:\...\ok.class-377e0ae3-6b77864c.class Exploit-ByteVerify
C:\Documents and Settings\...\Temp\mit5F5.tmp Adware-Mirar
C:\Documents and Settings\...\Temp\mit5F5.tmp Adware-Mirar

C:\Documents and Settings\...\mit5F5.tmp.cab Adware-Mirar
C:\...\NNBar_VCSetup_876075.exe Adware-Mirar
C:\...\NNBar_VCSetup_876075.exe Adware-Mirar
C:\WINDOWS\system32\adrotate.dll

I deleted the files that I could find. Some of the paths are incomplete so I did a Windows search with no results. (I have all the option for showing all files including system files enabled.)

Next I downloaded and ran Windows Malicious Software removal tool. This came up with no results.

Hoping it was fixed, I opened IE today. No music this time...but three or four times I have had a window open in the background and shift the focus to itself.

So I ran hijackthis from it's own folder in the root of C: Here are the results:

Hi coffeeman and welcome to TSF.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation of all that you’ve done. Hopefully your work will make things a bit easier.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your system is clean.

Disable Windows Defender
Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Show Hidden Files
Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Downloads
Please download Cleanup! or use this Alternate Link if the main link does not work and install it. You will use this later.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW!

Download Ewido Anti-Malware
This is a 30 day trial
  • Install Ewido Anti-Malware.
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
    • I also recommend changing the "Update interval" to something more reasonable like 12 hours.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

Reboot
Reboot your system in Safe Mode.
  • Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8 (dependent on your system this may be F5 or another key)
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Use the arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

HijackThis Entries
Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (if they still exist) (make sure you do not miss any)

O2 - BHO: SSL encrypt - {746455FE-D059-47e7-AF0E-140E03F5A447} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsy5F9.dll
O16 - DPF: {5526B4C6-63D6-41A1-9783-0FABF529859A} - mk:@MSITStore:C:\DOCUME~1\Bill\LOCALS~1\Temp\mma.c hm::/joysavsht.cab
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winjrs32 - winjrs32.dll (file missing)

File Deletions
Delete the following File indicated in RED if it still exists.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsy5F9.dll

Run CleanUp!
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from Start > All Programs). Set the program up as follows:

Click Options
Move the slider button down to Custom CleanUp!
Check the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the “Temporary Files” tab and uncheck the box for “Scan drives for file matching” if it’s checked.

Click OK, Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and DO NOT REBOOT when prompted.
Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these BEFORE running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility.

Run Ewido
Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
  • When the scan is complete click Recommended Action and change it to Quarantine
  • Then click Apply all actions
Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop.

NOTE: Ewido scan may require an hour.

Reboot
Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Online Scan

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner.

1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. *Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *

Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on See report then click Save report

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Logs required

Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems.

Wow! Thanks Glaswegian!

I followed all of your advice exactly.

I first disabled Defender

I then installed Cleanup! and Ewido.

I set downloaded the updates for Ewido and set it up as described.

I rebooted into safe mode and ran Hijackthis.

When it found the files you mentioned, I checked them and clicked fix. It appears to have removed them.

Here is the hijackthis log before clicking fix:

Next I looked for C:\windows\system32\nsy5f9.dll. It wasn't there. I made sure that windows explorer was set up the way you described...showing system files and hidden files.

I then ran Cleanup! in the manner you described. I was actually surprised at how much it deleted.

I then ran Ewido. It apparently found some things. Here is the scan:

---------------------------------------------------------
ewido anti-spyware - Scan Report
---------------------------------------------------------

+ Created at: 2:38:54 PM 8/29/2006

+ Scan result:

C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\MiniBugTransporter.dll -> Adware.Aws : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\Analyzer\Events\{6C736D71-BCBF-11D0-8A23-00AA00B58E10} -> Adware.CoolWebSearch : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).
C:\WINDOWS\system32:lzx32.sys -> Hijacker.Costrat.g : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).
C:\Documents and Settings\Bill\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\file\ok.class-377e0ae3-6b77864c.class -> Trojan.Nocheat : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).

::Report end

I then rebooted into Normal mode.

I opened IE and went to Pandasoft as described and ran the online virus scan.

It also said to have found 2 viruses and some spyware.

Here is the pandasoft scan:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/winprotect Not disinfected c:\windows\help\SPAlert.chm
Adware:adware/adrotator Not disinfected Windows Registry
Virus:W32/Netsky.P.worm Disinfected Personal Folders\Deleted Items\Re: Message\document.pif
Hacktool:Exploit/iFrame Not disinfected Personal Folders\Deleted Items\Mail Delivery (failure My e-mail was here)
Virus:W32/Netsky.P.worm Disinfected Personal Folders\Deleted Items\Mail Delivery (failure My e-mail was here)\message.scr

One things was a little odd. When I was running the pandasoft scan a little window popped up and asked me to name a profile???? It's default name was Outlook. When I clicked on a box to see what other options was there (Because I didn't know what it meant), it said that Outlook could not be activated. I notice in the scan that my e-mail address came up. Since this is a public forum I didn't want it seen so I just replaced it with "My email was here".

When I opened IE this time...so far...no pop ups have occured. Things seem to be running fine but I am a little paranoid about not having my virus scan or defender running so I won't be surfing much until I hear more.

Thanks again. I really appreciate it.

Hi again

Looking good. Windows Defender and AVG are both running again so don’t worry about surfing. And you will now have the Ewido Guard for the next 30 days as well – look at the 023 entries in your log. Panda does require an e-mail address before scanning – possibly a problem at Panda’s end since you managed the scan. Sometimes HJT will not delete files when fixing entries, so we list them for manual deletion just in case.

Please delete the following file (if it still exists):

c:\windows\help\SPAlert.chm

If it resists, you may have to boot to Safe Mode to delete it.

Let’s run another online scan.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Extended
Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
Click OK

Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Take note of the name(s) and location(s) of any file(s) it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Please post back with the Kaspersky Log and a fresh HijackThis Log. Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems.

Hello again!

I followed your latest set of instructions.

First I deleted this file with no problems:

c:\windows\help\SPAlert.chm

Next I ran the kaspersky virus scan.

The scan found quite a few viruses but said that they were locked.

I didn't try to manually delete any of them. I decided to wait for further instructions.

Here is the scan from Kaspersky:

My System

Blog Entries: 10
Hi again

Most of the nasties are held in your System Restore points and we’ll deal with them shortly. There’s also quite a few things held in your Outlook deleted and sent folders – I would clean them out. Other than that you’re clean. Any more problems? If not we’ll just tidy up and I’ll let you go, along with my recommendations for staying safe and secure.

Reset Hidden/System Files
To reset your hidden and system files:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

System Restore
To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK.

To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK.

This will create a new Restore Point.

IMPORTANT!!!
Please ensure that Windows is patched against the WMF exploit. This is a dangerous vulnerability that opens the door to multiple infections. Visit Window's Update to get the KB912919 patch if you have not already done so.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

Ad-aware
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here.

IE-SPYAD
IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here.

SnoopFree
SnoopFree is a real time monitor that notifies you when a programme wants to record your keystrokes or read your screen.

MVPS Hosts File
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file.

Alternate Browsers
Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer
Firefox
Opera
Maxthon

Firewalls
A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
Sygate Personal Firewall
ZoneAlarm
Tiny Personal Firewall

Anti Virus Software
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:
Anti-Spyware Tutorial

Here are two very good free Antivirus products which are available:
Avast!
AVG

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Other Protection
Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer.

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?
The Anti-Spyware Tutorial.
Making Internet Explorer Safer.

Keep clean and safe and enjoy your computing!

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Glaswegian, Thank you so much! (Sorry for the late reply. I had to go out of town for a few days.)

Everything appears to be working great.

Also, thanks for the links to the reccomended programs.

I learned a lot from your instructions and advice.
