I followed the 5 step process
Hi
I am having trouble with pop up windows that keep appearing when using IE. The problem does not seem to happen when using mozilla. Last Thursday, I clicked on a misrepresented link (stupid...i know) that led me to a site that started hammering me with some sort of virus. I use AVG virus scan and it immediatly caught it but as soon as I clicked "Heal" it popped up again. Then I see something saying that it is installing with a little progress bar going across. I pressed Ctrl Alt Del and closed all open IE windows...before the little progress bar was complete. I immediatly updated definitons and ran a full virus scan with AVG. No virus found. I did the same with ADAWARE. It found a few cookies but nothing major. So...somewhat relieved, I went back to work. However, the next time I went to the internet in IE, music started playing and after a few seconds a advertisement window would pop up. (Windows focus shifted to that window too.) It took a few seconds after IE opened before the window popped up. So I ran AVG and ADAWARE again and they found nothing. At this point I ran windows update to see if any security updates would fix the problem. My system is now updated but not fixed. That is when I found this site. I downloaded the 5 steps and followed them. I updated all definitions for all programs and then booted into safe mode and ran the following: AVG ADAWARE and also the VX2 Add on CWSHREDDER. These turned up nothing. I also ran Spybot Search and Destroy This turned up 36 items which it told it to remove. It said that they were successfully removed. I rebooted back into normal mode and ran two online virus scans; Symantec and McAffee The results of the Symantec scan are shown below: 201444 files scanned, 12 file(s) infected on your disk drives. No viruses were detected in memory. Your computer is free of known threats. Virus Detection does not check compressed files. Your computer appears safe for now. For real-time protection from viruses, hackers and privacy threats, upgrade to Norton Internet Security™. No viruses were detected in memory. The scan was cancelled before finishing. To restart the scan, click here. Your computer is free of known threats. Virus Detection does not check compressed files. Your computer appears safe for now. For real-time protection from viruses, hackers and privacy threats, upgrade to Norton Internet Security™. Search for the name of the threat(s) listed below on the Symantec Security Response site for removal information. Warning! The scan detected a virus that is active in your computer's memory. The scan ended to prevent further infection. You should shut down your computer immediately and restart it with an antivirus rescue disk or similar tool. No viruses were detected in memory. Your computer is infected with at least one known virus or Trojan horse. Search for the name of the threat(s) listed below on the Symantec Security Response site for removal information. I probably should not have done the next step...but I tracked down the 12 files that were shown in a specific path and deleted them. Next I ran Mcaffee. Here are the results. C:\...\ok.class-377e0ae3-6b77864c.class Exploit-ByteVerify C:\Documents and Settings\...\Temp\mit5F5.tmp Adware-Mirar C:\Documents and Settings\...\Temp\mit5F5.tmp Adware-Mirar C:\Documents and Settings\...\mit5F5.tmp.cab Adware-Mirar C:\Documents and Settings\...\mit5F5.tmp.cab Adware-Mirar C:\...\NNBar_VCSetup_876075.exe Adware-Mirar C:\...\NNBar_VCSetup_876075.exe Adware-Mirar C:\WINDOWS\system32\adrotate.dll I deleted the files that I could find. Some of the paths are incomplete so I did a Windows search with no results. (I have all the option for showing all files including system files enabled.) Next I downloaded and ran Windows Malicious Software removal tool. This came up with no results. Hoping it was fixed, I opened IE today. No music this time...but three or four times I have had a window open in the background and shift the focus to itself. So I ran hijackthis from it's own folder in the root of C: Here are the results: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 1:37:12 PM, on 8/28/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCDsrv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\mainserv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\WcTray.exe C:\WINDOWS\Mixer.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LVCOMSX.EXE C:\Program Files\Maxtor\OneTouch\utils\Onetouch.exe C:\Program Files\Maxtor\OneTouch Status\maxmenumgr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\RemCtrl\ATIX10.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\cisvc.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\MAIN\ATISched.EXE C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\main\ATIDtct.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\inetinfo.exe C:\Program Files\Maxtor\Maxtor Backup\MaxBackServiceInt.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7Debug\mdm.exe C:\Program Files\Red Chair Software\Anapod Explorer\anamgr.exe C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\Media Manager\MSSQL$SONY_MEDIAMGR\Binn\sqlservr.exe C:\Program Files\WordWeb\wweb32.exe C:\Program Files\Maxtor\OneTouch\Utils\SyncServices.exe C:\Program Files\Promise Technology, Inc\Promise Array Management\MsgSvr.exe C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\SMAgent.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wscntfy.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\cidaemon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\cidaemon.exe C:\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll O2 - BHO: SSL encrypt - {746455FE-D059-47e7-AF0E-140E03F5A447} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsy5F9.dll O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar2.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar2.dll O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your system is clean. Disable Windows Defender Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.

Wow! Thanks Glaswegian!
I followed all of your advice exactly.
I first disabled Defender I then installed Cleanup! and Ewido. I set downloaded the updates for Ewido and set it up as described. I rebooted into safe mode and ran Hijackthis. It wasn't there. I made sure that windows explorer was set up the way you described...showing system files and hidden files. I then ran Cleanup! in the manner you described. I was actually surprised at how much it deleted. I then ran Ewido. It apparently found some things. Here is the scan: --------------------------------------------------------- ewido anti-spyware - Scan Report --------------------------------------------------------- + Created at: 2:38:54 PM 8/29/2006 + Scan result: C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\MiniBugTransporter.dll -> Adware.Aws : Cleaned with backup (quarantined). I opened IE and went to Pandasoft as described and ran the online virus scan. It also said to have found 2 viruses and some spyware. Here is the pandasoft scan: Incident Status Location Adware:adware/winprotect Not disinfected c:\windows\help\SPAlert.chm Adware:adware/adrotator Not disinfected Windows Registry Virus:W32/Netsky.P.worm Disinfected Personal Folders\Deleted Items\Re: Message\document.pif Hacktool:Exploit/iFrame Not disinfected Personal Folders\Deleted Items\Mail Delivery (failure My e-mail was here) Virus:W32/Netsky.P.worm Disinfected Personal Folders\Deleted Items\Mail Delivery (failure My e-mail was here)\message.scr One things was a little odd. When I was running the pandasoft scan a little window popped up and asked me to name a profile???? It's default name was Outlook. When I clicked on a box to see what other options was there (Because I didn't know what it meant), it said that Outlook could not be activated. I notice in the scan that my e-mail address came up. Since this is a public forum I didn't want it seen so I just replaced it with "My email was here". When I opened IE this time...so far...no pop ups have occured. Things seem to be running fine but I am a little paranoid about not having my virus scan or defender running so I won't be surfing much until I hear more. Thanks again. I really appreciate it. Hi again
Looking good. Windows Defender and AVG are both running again so don’t worry about surfing. And you will now have the Ewido Guard for the next 30 days as well – look at the 023 entries in your log. Panda does require an e-mail address before scanning – possibly a problem at Panda’s end since you managed the scan. Sometimes HJT will not delete files when fixing entries, so we list them for manual deletion just in case. Please delete the following file (if it still exists): c:\windows\help\SPAlert.chm If it resists, you may have to boot to Safe Mode to delete it. Let’s run another online scan. Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky WebScanner Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Please post back with the Kaspersky Log and a fresh HijackThis Log. Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems.

Hello again!
I followed your latest set of instructions. First I deleted this file with no problems: c:\windows\help\SPAlert.chm Next I ran the kaspersky virus scan. The scan found quite a few viruses but said that they were locked. I didn't try to manually delete any of them. I decided to wait for further instructions. Hi again
Most of the nasties are held in your System Restore points and we’ll deal with them shortly. There’s also quite a few things held in your Outlook deleted and sent folders – I would clean them out. Other than that you’re clean. Any more problems? If not we’ll just tidy up and I’ll let you go, along with my recommendations for staying safe and secure. Reset Hidden/System Files To reset your hidden and system files:
System Restore To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK. To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK. This will create a new Restore Point. IMPORTANT!!! Please ensure that Windows is patched against the WMF exploit. This is a dangerous vulnerability that opens the door to multiple infections. Visit Window's Update to get the KB912919 patch if you have not already done so. Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs: Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. Ad-aware Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. IE-SPYAD IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here. SnoopFree SnoopFree is a real time monitor that notifies you when a programme wants to record your keystrokes or read your screen. MVPS Hosts File The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file. Alternate Browsers Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer Firefox Opera Maxthon Firewalls A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use: Sygate Personal Firewall ZoneAlarm Tiny Personal Firewall Anti Virus Software It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners: Anti-Spyware Tutorial Here are two very good free Antivirus products which are available: Avast! AVG It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Other Protection Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here: Using Winpatrol to protect your computer. In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles How Did I Get Infected In The First Place? The Anti-Spyware Tutorial. Making Internet Explorer Safer. Keep clean and safe and enjoy your computing! Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
