trojan.dropper.dll (hijack this log inside)

Hello everyone!

I came here with the hope that you may be able to help me. First, let me quickly sum up what happened:

Last night, I was on Myspace (MSN) and without doing anything, a security warning from Norton detected a trojan named "trojan.dropper.dll" it couldn't clean it, so it quarantined it. I then tried to get rid of it by restarting my pc in safe mode, I've de-activated the system restore feature and ran a full scan with norton, and deleted the file it detected. I've also deleted the quarantined infected files. I then proceeded to restart my pc, and re-activated system restore, but I get a bizarre window every time I start my computer from now on, saying I've typed (something in symbols) and the only option is to click on ok...So, I've run hijack this to find out what's going on and this is what the log says:

OK Tonight, I've got other problems. I've run the eTrust antivirus and it has detected Win32\swizzor in C Program files Adverts - file name: uninst.exe
but I can't go any further than that, because at some point my AOL connection stalls and crashes.

I also took shots of the 2 warning messages I get as I'm starting Windows (starting my pc) but I don't know how to post them here so I'll write what it says:
First error window: "Windows cannot find (something in symbols) Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for file, click the start button and click search"
the only option is to press ok, so at this point I press ok, and a second window comes up saying:
"could not load or run (something in symbols) specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference in your registry."

  • Delete Newsgroup cache
  • Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
  • Delete Cookies

* * * * * * RUNNING ADDITIONAL SCANNERS * * * * * * * * * * *

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner & select the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop.
** Ewido scan would require at least an hour. I suggest that you go grab a cup of coffee & do something else while you wait for it to complete.

* * * * * * REBOOT TO NORMAL MODE * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Download fl.zip.
Extract the contents to a new folder on Desktop. (do NOT run it from within the zip file)
Within the folder, locate & double-click fl.bat.
It should produce a report at c:\findlop.txt. Post the contents of the report in your next reply

In your next post, please include fresh logs from:
  • HiJackThis log
  • Findlop.txt
  • Online Scan

If you don't already know, you're probably not using XP64.

Download & run this tool to find out for sure..

Cheers! (sorry for being a terribly unknowledgeable girlie)

For any entries that you do not have, skip them & proceed with the next instructions.

Ok thanks sUBs, that's cool. I'll do just that.

PS: do I need to switch off the system restore feature (at the safe mode stage)?

Please don't!! Despite what the antivirus companies say, system restore is your only saving grace should anything untowards happens. We will clear system Restore only when you're totally disinfected.

Ok great! It was just a question because I asked myself if it was a "common sense" thing to do...I'll disconnect for now, skipping the files I can't find in the report and then come back to you when I've finished.

You're great btw, I appreciate it

Kaspersky online scanner will be down until next week.
Please use this instead - Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click Scan Now
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report
Post the contents of the report in your next reply

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

ok thanks for that info.
What's the "real time scanner" of an anti virus? (I have norton and I think an AOL version + other spywares running automatically).

I've managed to follow the instructions well, but encountered the following problems:

1) Un-installing program section: couldn't locate "mywebsearch" and "adwarealert" in the add/remove programs section. The following applications were not familiar to me though: BroadJump Client Foundation, Learn2 player (uninstall only), RAW file converter LE, TopStyle Lite (version 3.0)

2) - Delete files/folders: the only one I was able to find and delete is the "funk size peak software" one. The others were not there (mywebsearch, flawlink, Anti-v-1, HSNXFPZ.exe, AdwareAlert, Boregr~1)

3- In the "Advanced" tab of the "view hidden tasks" the only listing I could see in there with digits and numbers was a listing called ABF9D3CE918A4DOA (without the "job" after the digits/numbers) so in doubt, I haven't deleted it.

The Ewido scan was fine, and I got the following report from it (I'll post the others later, after finding out what I should do with the antivirus):

Sorry for the delay but I have had internet troubles for the past 24 hours. Please read the rest of this post completely before begining the fix.

Right click on this & choose "Save As..." DelO15Domains.inf - DelO15Domains.inf
Right click on DelO15Domains.inf and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete the file afterwards.

SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 - Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items

IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain

Please download the file attached - regdel.zip
Double-click the file within & allow it to merge with the Registry.
This will remove some malware entries from the Registry

Thanks. Sorry to hear about your Internet problems.

err I don't know what to do with the first DelDomains control, that's all it comes up with but it doesn't make any sense to me at all:

; DelDomains.inf © 11-28-04 | Revised 01-15-06
; Created by: Mike Burgess Microsoft MVP
; http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/
;
; Warning: Deletes all entries in the Restricted & Trusted Zone list
; http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/restricted.htm
;
; Revised to include the EscDomains key
;
; To execute this file: in Explorer - right-click (this file)
; Select Install from the Menu.
; Note: you will not see any onscreen action.
