StopSign/eAcceleration problem, spyware and viruses
Ladies and gents, thanks for your excellent support in the past. Recently, I had a run-in with a bunch of spyware and viruses. About 2 weeks ago, I got a spyware or virus alert with a recurring StopSign/eAccelerator pop-up. After trying to cancel without purchasing, I kept getting the pop-up and foolishly, fell for their trap and purchased their program. It appeared initially to solve my problem, but I have been having spyware and virus attacks and performance issues since then.
One of the things that keeps happening is that my mouse pointer is getting "hijacked" (not sure if that's the correct terminology here); that is, I will be working with my mouse and all of a sudden, I lose control over it and it goes zipping across my screen to a different part of the screen. This is a corporate laptop, with some corporate security limitations, but I'm often out in the field, connecting to hotel or client networks outside of the company firewall, and I'm sure outside of other security measures. I uninstalled and cancelled my StopSign/eAccelerator service, but I think there are still fragments on my system. At startup, I'm getting a RUNDLL error for C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\Anti-Virus\sstsmon.dll saying that the "Specified Module cannot be found". You will notice that this directory appears in my HJT log below and is also checked off in my msconfig Startup menu. I believe that just unchecking the startup will fix this problem, but wanted to let you experts be the judge of that. I performed all of the "Before Posting a Hijackthis Log" steps that you requested and the various scanners found a lot of spyware and even 4 or 5 viruses. Our corporate load includes Symantic AntiVirus which I also ran and which kept a History Log of all the threats detected, quarantined, etc. should you need a copy of that log. Hoping that by reviewing my HJT, you can help me find any remnants of these nasty creatures and can fix the mouse pointer problem for me. Thanks in advance for your prompt assistance. Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter" and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present). Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so! Do you recognize all the URLs in your Trusted Zone? (O15 section) They seem related to business enterprises. Some of our tools might remove them, and you'd have to place them back in that case. Also, please enable all startups in MSCONFIG, but do not reboot if it asks you to, untill we run the fix.

TB, thanks for the e-mail. I have done what you asked and posted the Smit Fraud Fix text file below. As for the O15 Trusted Zones, yes, I recogmize some of them, others I do not, but I am new to the company and some of them I may not have used yet. Most of them look related to accounting and finance, the field that I am in. These are just trusted zones and I can always re-establish those if need be, correct? If so, I'd say let's proceed and if I lose some, I'll deal with that after we fix the current problem.

Here is the new HJT log. I'm still having frequent and recurring problems with my mouse pointer getting "hijacked". That appears to me to be the only remaining problem. Is this related to potential spyware?

OK, here we go....You're showing signs of an inactive Smitfraud infection, but we should run the proper fix to make sure no files have been left behind.
Not sure about the mouse pointer as yet....is it a new notebook? Does it have one of the rollerball mouse controls in the middle of the keyboard? Before begining the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not (while in Safe Mode) be available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Download Ewido Anti-Malware
Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet. (Not Recommended for XP64). *WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things. Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: eAcceleration or StopSign --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [StopSignSsTsMon] Rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\Anti-Virus\sstsmon.dll",VerifyStatus --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab: * Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders. * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. * Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types * Click Yes to confirm and then click OK. Delete the following if they exist: C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool. Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. You will be prompted : " Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter. The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question " Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter. A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode. The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Run Cleanup! using the following configuration: Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows: Click "Options..." Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!" Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.. Do NOT Reboot/logoff when prompted. * CleanUp! will not create any backups!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web> Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present:

Restart in normal mode. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan ** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner

I'm almost through all of this. We didn't seem to find much so far, but I'm having a problem running the Panda ActiveScan. I get all the way through to the point where it says, "Starting Scan", but it doesn't start the scan. Any ideas why it won't run?

Norton may be preventing it from running. Realtime AVs should be disabled when running an online scan.
If that fails, try running Kaspersky: Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.

Please use this instead - * Click here to use the F-Secure Online Scanner It's explained there with images how to allow the ActiveX to start the scan, so read that first.

----------------------------- Clear your Symantec Quarantine. If you are unsure of how to do this, navigate to the Quarantine file as follows: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine Leave the folder intact, just empty it's contents. ----------------------------- These logs and reports are coming back clean. How is your system behaving now, please? |

Hi Ried and thanks for the response. My system seems to be performing fine now. A couple of remaining questions:
1) I indicated early on in the thread that my mouse cursor was acting erratically, seemingly being "hijacked". This no longer appears to be happening, but I thought it may have been because of some adware/spyware/virus issue. Is that possible or is it more likely a hardware issue with the mouse? If it starts happening again, should I just replace the mouse? 2) I am picking up some of the same adware cookies again and again, such as C:\Documents and Settings\jm10459\Cookies\jm10459@atdmt[2].txt -> TrackingCookie.Atdmt, jm10459@doubleclick[1].txt -> TrackingCookie.Doubleclick, jm10459@mediaplex[2].txt -> TrackingCookie.Mediaplex, jm10459@ads.pointroll[2].txt -> TrackingCookie.Pointroll, jm10459@qksrv[2].txt -> TrackingCookie.Qksrv, jm10459@tribalfusion[2].txt -> TrackingCookie.Tribalfusion Can I somehow set up my anti-adware/spyware software or a firewall to prevent these cookies from attaching themselves to my system? 3) Currently, in my Symantec folders, in Quarantine, I have only 4 .vbn files. Just wanted to confirm that these are OK to delete? Also, there is quite a bit of history in Threat Histories. Do I just leave that alone or should I delete those items as well? 4) Finally, this is a corporate laptop. When in the office, I'm sure that I am protected by a corporate firewall, but I am out of the office in the field about 75% of the time. Should I install other protection such as AVG antivirus and a local laptop firewall such as Zone Alarm, or will these conflict with Symantec and the corporate firewall? 1. As the issue with your mouse seems to have gone away after cleaning your system, I feel it's safe to presume it was caused by the malware on your system. 2. After addressing these questions, I'll have links to free programs for you--one of which is IESpyAd which will help block those cookies.  3. Yes, you can safely delete those .vbn files in the Quarantine. 4. Symantec Corporate Edition AV/Firewall are installed on this laptop, therefore you are protected whether you are in the office or in out in the field. While it may seem to be added protection to have more than 1 AV and/or Firewall, in actuality the programs will conflict with one another and actually provide less protection as well as cause system instability. ---------------------------------- We now have some final 'housekeeping' to tend to. Your logs are clean. If there aren't any more problems, please continue with these final instructions and helpful links. Reset hidden/system files and folders Windows XP =============== Click Start. * Open My Computer. * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. * Select the View tab. * Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option. * Select the Hide file extensions for known types option. * Select the Hide protected operating system files option. Click Yes to confirm. Click OK. Enable Windows Auto Update *Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl *Tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date" *Under Settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify". Click on "OK". Create a new System Restore point Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter * Select the System Restore Tab * Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply * Then untick the same checkbox & click OK This will prevent any reinfection from previous restore points. Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs, if you do not already have them: Download SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions. After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items . Download Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. Download IE-SPYAD.EXE to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. This is a self-extracting .ZIP file, and save it to your desktop. Once downloaded, double-click on it to extract the files inside (default dir is C:\IE-SPYAD) From within the folder, double-click install.bat Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list, by typing 2 Then return to the main menu. Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain, by typing 4 Download Adaware SE and install it if you don't have it already.
