general clean-up

hey guys/girls...

here's my latest HiJackThis log. Just wanting to know if there is anything there to get rid of to help speed up my computer - start-ups and shut-downs are a little slow, and opening some progs is a little laggy.

cheers.

Hello and welcome to TSF .

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Please download Cleanup! and install it. You will use this later. Do not install if you are using the 64 bit version of windows.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types. Click OK.
__________________________________________________________________

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any)

O2 - BHO: BrowserHelper Class - {EBCDDA60-2A68-11D3-8A43-0060083CFB9C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nzdd.dll

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

If you require more information regarding this removal as well as the following file deletion please visit here for more informations, after you boot in Normal Mode.

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nzdd.dll
_______________________________________________________________

Cleanup!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:

Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and reboot when prompted.
Do not logoff or reboot when prompted.

Ewido

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  • Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear.*Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it*
  • Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now *The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on See report then click Save report
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

So please provide the following with your next post:

Ewido Scan Report
Panda Scan Report
Afresh HJT Log

Please also let me know about your system's overall behaviour .

Hi spyne.

Please follow the following steps to ensure that you do not have any problem related with malwares.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with

Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

So please provide Kaspersky Scan Report with your next post.

Thought i should also add - what i meant by some progs being "laggy":
whenever i try to open firefox or ie after start up, it always takes about 10seconds before the page actually appears. also happens with other programs like msn messenger, or even opening the Quick Launch shortcut bar. now i always let my background programs (avg, ewido, bhodemon) do their thing before trying to open any programs so that i dont give my pc too many things to do at once, but i dont believe my pc should be so slow at start-up.
once the pc has been running for a while (more than 10mins) then things load fast as expected.
also, firefox (which i use 99% of the time instead of ie) occassionally stops responding, i dont know if this is due to a virus or my computer having too many things to do at once (i often have 6 or more tabs open in firefox)

Hello spyne, welcome back .

Download and run Blacklight

*Note that you must have local administrative privileges to run the program.

Click Scan. BlackLight will use Windows Explorer (the desktop process) to scan for hidden items. Your anti-virus software or personal firewall might display a warning that says Blacklight (blbeta.exe) is trying to manipulate the Windows Explorer process (explorer.exe). If you want to continue the scan, you should allow BlackLight to do this

When it finishes, click Next. You may get a screen similar to the picture below. Click on Close

BlackLight beta would create a log file "fsbl-<date-and-time>.log". By default, the log file is in the same directory as the executable.

Download gmer from http://www.gmer.net & unzip it to desktop.

Launch gmer.exe by double-clicking it. Select the rootkit tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked.

Press scan & when it has finished press copy & paste the log back here.

Please reboot in safe mode (by rpeatedly tapping F8 key during boot and selecting SAFE MODE from the menu) and delete the following files marked in RED:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\CT2NC9YJ\index[1].htm
C:\Program Files\Digital Smart Recorder\DigitalSmart-Audio-Recorder-for-FREE-Installer.EXE/WISE0014.BIN

Reboot your computer in normal mode.

With your next post please provide the Backlight Log and GMER Log.

Well done, your logs are clean!

Reset hidden/system files and folders

  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

System Restore

To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK.

Turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK.

This will create a new Restore Point.

MICROSOFT UPDATES

It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

SPYWARE PREVENTION SPEECH

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read TonyKlein's How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?. You need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard, to prevent spyware intrusions. IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. All of the above have good free versions available. However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

More information and downloads are available at the following links:

Spyware Blaster

Spyware Guard
IE-Spyad

Have a safe computing .
