It's possible that the error could be a syntax error with Combofix itself. We can do another test using Smitfraudfix.

From your earlier attempt, it stated the following....

it just closes when I hit 2 and then enter. Here's the message it gave me: "CScript Error: Can't find script engine "VBScript" for script "C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\\LOCALS~1\Temp\ARC5\GetPaths.vbs".

This bit we have fixed.

Process.exe file missing !
Unzip all the archive in a folder.

This part, we have to check/verify.

Go to the Smitfraudfix folder. Take a peek inside & see if there are eight(8) files within.



If all the files are present, we can make another attempt to run the tool.

1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the option to run Windows in Safe Mode.


* * * * * * RUNNING DR. WEB * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

• Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
• This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
• Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
• Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
• Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
• Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
• When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
• If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
  
  This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
• After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
• Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
• Close Dr.Web Cureit.
• Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
• After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

** The scan would require at least an hour. I suggest that you go grab a cup of coffee & do something else while you wait for it to complete.

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:\rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Website
Under the 'Web pages' box, Uncheck everything present.

Yep that Dr. Web scan found and deleted that file that keeps giving me a blue screen error message when I try to do online virus scans. The critters name is mssync20.exe - trojan - PWS.Spsrv. You've no idea how good I feel about getting rid of that little devil..! That was all that was found and successfully deleted and the only thing listed in the report.

Still having problems with that SmitfraudFix scanner. There is no option 2. it just says "Press any key to continue." When I press 2 or any other key for that matter, it just shuts the program down and no report as I have done a search for it on my machine. It's not there.

Dr. Web scan found and deleted that file that keeps giving me a blue screen error message when I try to do online virus scans. The critters name is mssync20.exe - trojan - PWS.Spsrv.

Please check Dr.Web's quarantine folder. It should be located at either of these locations:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\DoctorWeb\quarantine
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\DoctorWeb\quarantine

If you can find the mssync20.exe file, please submit it to this webpage . We need to check if it left any 'friends' behind

Still having problems with that SmitfraudFix scanner.

Let's use an alternate tool for this.

Download & extract it to it's own folder - smitRem.exe

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg - C:\Smitfiles.txt.
Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Website
Under the 'Web pages' box, Uncheck everything present.

Ermm.. just wondering. How did you know it's this file that's casuing the blue screens?

If you're able to perform an online scan, please visit Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.

• The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
• Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    • Extended
  • Scan Options:
    • Scan Archives
    • Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK & have it scan My Computer
• Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
• Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Just had a few minutes to reply while the wife is finishing dressing.

Funny thing is that when I tried an online virus scan (trendmicro) my old friend showed up again, mssync20.sys.

The reason I know that's the nasty file is because the error message on the blue screen reffers to it by name.

Download & extract this file to it's own folder - Registry Search

Launch Registry Search
In the search box, enter mssync20 & click "Ok".
Notepad will open with some text in it (the file will also be saved in the program's folder as well).

Tried Kaspersky and ended up with a blue screen.

Download and run Blacklight

Note that you must have local administrative privileges to run the program.

Click Scan. BlackLight will use Windows Explorer (the desktop process) to scan for hidden items. Your anti-virus software or personal firewall might display a warning that says Blacklight (blbeta.exe) is trying to manipulate the Windows Explorer process (explorer.exe). If you want to continue the scan, you should allow BlackLight to do this

When it finishes, click Next. You may get a screen similar to the picture below. Click on Close

BlackLight beta would create a log file "fsbl-<date-and-time>.log". By default, the log file is in the same directory as the executable. Please post the log

If Blacklight comes up empty handed....

Download gmer from http://www.gmer.net & unzip it to desktop

Launch gmer.exe by double-clicking it. Select the rootkit tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked.

Press scan & when it has finished press copy & paste the log back here
