Infected with PSNREG.DLL
A week or two ago I noticed my computer was running much slower and I was constantly getting pop-ups about WinAntiVirus Pro 2006. After some investigation I determined my PC had become infected. I ran Norton AntiVirus and found several suspect files, most of which I was able to remove. One, PSNREG.DLL, cannot be removed. Also, I noticed a process under Task Manager-UWA6P****-which I would stop. If I didnot stop the UWA6P process an icon for WINANTIVIRUS would be placed on my desktop.
My system is a SONY Vaio, Pentium 4, 1.5Ghz with 256M of RAm. After checking with this forum I followed the 5 Step Process. I was unable to run Ad-Aware due to the fact that it would always thank me for downloading it but it was never placed on my PC. I was able to run Spybot Search & Destroy and CWSHredder-latest versions and updates for both. I then ran the CA scan which found and deleted one executable and Bitdefender which identified several .exe's for the Trojan.Downloader.TY but ended with the message "Your Computer is Still Infected". I ran Norton AV which identified PSNREG.DLL as infected but could neither fix nor delete it. I attempted to manually delete it but coud not. I ran HJT and here is the log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 9:51:34 AM, on 7/13/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\AOLACSD.EXE C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Pure Networks\Network Magic\nmsrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Utilities\NPROTECT.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\Program Files\CyberPower PowerPanel Personal Edition\ppped.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\SPEEDD~1\nopdb.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\fxssvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Visioneer OneTouch\OneTouchMon.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\AOLDial.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Pure Networks\Network Magic\nmapp.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\RunDLL32.exe C:\Program Files\CyberPower PowerPanel Personal Edition\pppeuser.exe C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Action Setup\VAServ.exe C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton Utilities\SYSDOC32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\hjt\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.sony.com/vaiopeople O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: SideStep Browser Helper - {08351226-6472-43BD-8A40-D9221FF1C4CE} - C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\SbCIe026.dll O2 - BHO: Yahoo! A little more information about the problem.
MY computer now is performing much better. I still see NAV identifying PSNREG.DLL as an infected file which it cannot remove. The warning from NAV appears whenever I launch IE. Regards, Pat |

Ewido usually gets files like that, but we'll have to take it out another way.
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Looks like you got it!
I had to disable NAV and run offline to get VUNDO to recognize and remove PSNREG.dll. I ran HJT while offline then rebooted with NAV on and online and ran it again. I am including the VUNDo and both HJT reports. Also, some of the sites asked for contributions. I would like to help support these efforts. Who which org's should I send donations to and any suggestions on amount? Windows Update Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at Microsoft Update Site. Prevention A good virus scanner is a necessity in today's computer environment. Many virus scanners include active components that protect you from infection without even running a scan. Some good free antivirus programs include: AVG Free Avast! Home Edition (Antivirus & Firewall) AntiVir A firewall is the first line of defense standing between the internet and your computer. Some good free firewalls are: Zone Alarm Outpost Tiny Personal Firewall Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall Adaware SE and Spybot SD are a pair of anti-spyware scanners that should be run every week or two. Although there is some overlap there are many pieces of malware that is caught by one of these and not the other, therefore it is recommended you use both to compliment each other. Spybot also contains two other useful pieces. The first is "Immunize", this helps protect your computer against known exploits. The second is "TeaTimer", with this feature enabled you will receive notifications of all changes to the registry such as programs adding themselves to start-up and you default search page being changed. Spyware Blaster is a powerful tool that prevents "drive-by" downloads and other unwanted installations. It also uses no system resources, run it once and you're all set. Spyware Guard Is a realtime protection engine to guard your computer from spyware. This program does for spyware what an antivirus program does for viruses. IE-Spyad is a program that only needs to be run once to protect you from many malicious sites. It adds domains of known adware companies into the Restricted List of Internet Explorer, preventing them from performing malicious actions on your PC. The MVPS HOSTS file is a file you can download and use to replace your regular hosts file. It prevents many sites from performing malicious actions by blocking the sites from ever being accessed. Together these programs form a powerful barrier between the Internet and your computer. However, all the programs stand alone and feel free to eliminate any you are not comfortable with. Any protection you add to your PC is better than no protection at all. Alternative Programs Here are some alternatives that are either less suceptible than others to malware or don't contain malware where similar programs do. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN) Desktop Weather - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light. Firefox - This is an increasingly popular alternate browser. Whilst Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.
