Joefireline try this:

Hi Joefireline,

-----------------------------

HJT IN TEMP DIRECTORY

You are running Hijack This from a temporary directory. It needs to be in a permanent folder. Please go into Windows Explorer, click on C: then click on File > New > Folder and call it HJT , or another name of your choice. The program creates backup files that we may need to use later. If the program is in a Temporary folder, files may be deleted by you or automatically if your system is set to empty temp files.
-----------------------------

Multiple AV Programs

You are running several different anti-virus applications. That's a no-no. The applications are AVG, Avast! and PC Tools Anti-Virus. Please uninstall all but one of those as they can interfere with each other, and cause significant slow-downs.
-----------------------------

Downloads

Please download Cleanup! and install it. You will use this later. *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

Please download the trial version of Ewido anti-malware
  • Install Ewido anti-malware.
  • When installing, under Additional Options uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you could get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click Ok.
  • The program will prompt you to update. Click the Ok button.
  • The program will now go to the main screen.
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button.
  • Click on Start.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once finished updating, close Ewido.
* If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido. Ewido manual updates. Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update.
-----------------------------

Disable Windows Defender

Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
-----------------------------

Enable all startup Items

Please go to Start>Run type msconfig press Enter and enable all startups by selecting Normal Startup - Load all Device Drivers and Services
----------------------------

Safe Mode Reboot

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
-----------------------------

Run Cleanup

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:

Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and reboot when prompted.
-----------------------------

Run Ewido

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
    • Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
    • Under What to scan select Scan every file
    • Click on Ok
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click Ok.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
  • Click Save Report button
  • Save the report to your Desktop
-----------------------------

Reboot into Normal mode
-----------------------------

Please note:

I don't see anything bad in your log... aside from your system being slow are there any other symptoms that may indicate it has a problem?
-----------------------------

Run Panda Scan

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on See report then click Save report
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

-----------------------------

What I need from you

1. Panda Scan report
2. HiJackThis log <-------- Done after Panda Scan.
3. Ewido log

Delete the following Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\zzom <--- Probably C:\Program Files\Common Files but may not be.
-----------------------------

Run Ewido again with proper settings

It looks like Ewido ran last time, but it wasn't configured properly. Please follow the instructions below:

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
    • Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
    • Under What to scan select Scan every file
    • To make sure Ewido is configured correctly:
    • Click the Scanner tab at the top and then the Settings sub-tab:
    • Under How to act?, click Recommended actions and select Quarantine.
    • Click on Ok
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.

Let the program scan the machine.

Close Ewido.
-----------------------------

Run Brute Force Uninstaller

Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Beside the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon and select alcanshorty.bfu by double clicking on it.
  • Press Execute and let it do it’s job. (You ought to see a blue progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • When it finishes running, click the Save button for a copy of the log
Post the log created by the script when you have completed the fix
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Reboot into normal windows and post the contents of Ewido text report that you saved and a new HiJackThis log. (after following all of my directions)
-----------------------------

Flush Netscape cookies and cache

From the open browser, go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies > Clear
Also, click Cache > Clear Cache > Now
-----------------------------

[size=1]* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
------------------------------

What I need from you

1. Results from the L2M Program C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt
2. BFU Report
3. Ewido log
4. Panda results
5. HiJackThis log <-------- Done just before posting.

Hi Joefireline

Please read this post completely before begining the fix. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Please ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON'T MISS A STEP & PERFORM EVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT ORDER.

Please also note that it is very important that you follow all of the steps below, and on each post I make. You may want to subscribe to this thread. To do so click Thread Tools then subscribe to this thread. We'll get through this infection, but I'll need you to stay with me and make sure to keep checking if I've posted. Only when it's time will we consider this issue resolved. Thanks!
-----------------------------

Disable Protection

Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools>Options.
  • Scroll down and uncheck "Use real-time protection (recommended)".
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
-----------------------------

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and select Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types. Click OK.
-----------------------------

Clear Ewido Quarantine files

You ran ewido correctly, nice work! Now we need to remove the items from quarantine.
  • Start Ewido as you normally do.
  • Make sure you are at the status screen by clicking the Status icon.
  • Click Show quarantine
  • Once in the quarantine window you should see the items that were quarantined during your last scan. Click Select All
  • Click Remove Finally which should remove the items from the quarantine.
    ------------------------------

Empty Quarantine from other AV programs

Please empty any items that are in the quarantine of any of your Anti-Virus (AVG) or anti-spyware (Windows Defender) applications.
------------------------------

HJT FIXES

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=userinit.exe

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.
-----------------------------

File Deletions

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

c:\windows\enewsletterpro1.dat
C:\Uploads

-----------------------------

Create an Uninstall List:

Open HijackThis
*Click on the "Configure" button on the bottom right
*Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
*Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
*Click on the button "Save list"
Please copy and past the List from your system in your next post.

Kaspersky Scan

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

What I need from you in your next post:

1. The uninstall list
2. Kaspersky Scan Logfile
3. A new HJT scan <-------- Taken just before posting.

Hi,
Sorry that I have not been able to progress futher, I have been too busy, and never got a chance to go on the other computer to fix it.
Right,
I can't seem to open Ewido, whenever I double click on the icon, a loading thing comes up where the curser is, but then it goes away, and doesn't open. Any ideas? Should I re-install it?

Hi, I got all the results, but I have a problem. I can't post it here, as it is too long, and I can't attach it, because it is saying I have reached my attach limit or something.

Could you give me your email address, so I can e-mail it to you?

Joseph -

Split it up into multiple posts if needed, or remove some of your old attachments to allow the space.

Hi,
I can't really spilt into mulitiple posts, as it would be 13 posts just for the Kaspersky.
How do I go abouts deleting other attachments? I have gone into 'User CP' and 'attachments' but could find how to delete some.
Thanks,

Post the Uninstall List, and the new HJT log, and we'll work on getting the Kaspersky scan log.

Doesn't really matter to us if it's 13 posts, we can snip it later. If it's that big, you'll have to split it into multiple attachments, more than likely.

I can help you with the attachments, let me know via PM.

Hi Joefireline,

P2P Programs Found

P2P - I see you have P2P software SoulSeek and BitTorrent installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.
-----------------------------

Remove Program

Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs (if they exist):

Registry Cleaner
-----------------------------

Run Cleanup

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:

Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
  • Click on the Temporary Files tab and uncheck the box for Scan drives for files matching if it’s checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and reboot when prompted.
-----------------------------

Logout and Reboot

Please Logout and Reboot your system. This is to make sure nothing is loaded that may interfere with your system that I cannot see yet.
-----------------------------

Enable Normal Startup
  • Click Start
  • Click Run
  • Type msconfig and hit Enter
  • Check Normal Startup
  • Click Apply
  • Click Close
  • The system will tell you that it needs to restart. DO NOT RESTART. Click Exit Without Restart.
-----------------------------

Get a New HijackThis Log

For us to be able to determine whether your system is truly clean we need one additional HijackThis Log. Please get one last log for me and post it in your next post.
-----------------------------

Question

Joefireline, can you tell me how your system is performing now? Any quicker?
-----------------------------

What I need from you

New HiJackThis log

Hi,
the system is still fairly slow. It is a fair bit faster, but still takes a while to load things. The HDD seems to be loading more than it should. It is a fair bit faster at logging on though.

Hi Joefireline,

Download combofix - From one of the links below. (Please note: DO NOT RENAME THE FILE THIS CAN CAUSE IT TO NOT PERFORM CORRECTLY)
First Second

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please post the combofix log next

Joefireline,

The remaining issues do not appear to be malware related, please post in the Windows XP section re: your systems slowness and let the experts there assist you.

Let them know you've been cleared in the HJT forum, and appear to be malware free.

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Create a new System Restore point
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK
Please ensure that you have already patched your system against the recent WMF exploit. Go to this page to get the KB912919 patch.

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
    • Install & update SpywareBlaster with the latest definitions.
After you have updated, click the button - enable protection for all unprotected items
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • IE-SPYAD IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • Download IE-SpyAD - Extract the contents to a new folder
From within the folder, double-click install.bat
Select Option #2 - Install the new IE-SPYAD list.
Then return to the main menu.
Select option #4 - Add the old porn sites domain
  • MVPS HOST FILE The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer.
    • Download Host.zip to your desktop.
    • From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select:
      Extract All from the menu.
    • Click Next, click Next, select the option:
      "Show Extracted files", click Finish
    • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
    • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.

ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners: Anti-Spyware Tutorial

Here are two very good free Antivirus products which are available:
