Hijackthis Log Help

Hello There,

I am trying to help a friend out who has gotten himself into quite a bit of bother with adware/spyware.

Normally I can fix the issues but this pc just seems really stubborn.

I have gone through your list of to do's before posting this hijackthis log.(a fantastic list of to do's , very clear and concise).

If any one can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Chrs

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

---------------

DOWNLOADS

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido anti-malware from here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install Ewido anti-malware.
  • When installing, under Additional Options uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you could get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click Ok.
  • The program will prompt you to update. Click the Ok button.
  • The program will now go to the main screen.
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button.
  • Click on Start.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once finished updating, close Ewido.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates. Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update.

Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.

*WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

--------------

DISABLE ANTISPYWARE PROTECTION

Please disable Spywareguard, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
  • Right click the running icon of Spywareguard located in the system tray
  • Go to Menu > File > Exit and confirm the programs close.

Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

------------------

SAFE MODE

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

ONLINE SCAN

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

---------------------------

Post the Kaspersky log here and a new HJT log. DO NOT ATTACH THE LOGS. POST THEM SO THAT I CAN SEE THEM IN THE THREAD ITSELF.

----------------------------

How is the system performing now?

Sorry about attaching the logs, I will make sure they are posted next time.

From what he has told me the pc runs 100% better already, so thanks for your help.

I will get him to go through you instructions and see post back any info.

The only thing the keeps popping up after starup now is a message from spywareguard saying: -

"Your internet explorer current user default url has been changed
<none>
to
http://microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=iegr=iesearch".

Thanks for your help with this , sorry its going on a bit.

The message from Spyware Guard is normal when Internet Explorer settings are reset.

Change the homepage to anything you want and that message should go away.

Your log is clean and I'm happy to let you go if you are happy with the running of your system.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

-------------------------

To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK.

Turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK.

This will create a new Restore Point.

--------------------------

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read TonyKlein's How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?. You need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard, to prevent spyware intrusions. IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. All of the above have good free versions available. However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

More information and downloads are available at the following links:

Spyware Blaster

Spyware Guard
IE-Spyad

---------------------------

Please let me know if you are happy for me to treat your topic as resolved.

Hello,

That's fantastic. Thank you very much for all your time and yes please treat this as closed now.

From what I'm told he says the system is running perfect and is eternally grateful!!

I have to say I work in I.T. as support in a small company (23 people) and have to deal with minor spyware/malware events but nothing like this chaps pc that you have just cleared up. So it was an extremely valuable lesson, so thanks as well, really appreciated.

Best Regards..
