Welcome to TSF

Please subscribe to this thread to be notified of fixes as soon as they are posted by our Team. To do this, please click the "Thread Tools" button located in the original thread line and selecting "Subscribe to this Thread".

Before you begin, take a read through these instructions and download the programs that I've advised. Save the below instructions in Notepad or Word if you wish to reserve format. Alternatively, Print out the instructions because we require you work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.

If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

Please allow yourself a few spare hours. Below are instructions for a virus scan(s) that can take longer then 2 hours.

It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!! .

********************************FOR YOUR INFORMATION*************************

I notice that you have two anti-virus programs on your machine. That's not a good idea!!
Alike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other & may produce undesirable results. Please uninstall one of them.

********************************DOWNLOADS********************************

Please download these additional files/programs. Do not run them unless instructed to do so.
Unless otherwise stated, they should be stored in the same directory as the HiJackThis program.

Download and install CleanUp!. Do NOT run it yet.

Download Ewido Security Suite - Install & Update it's database but do not run it yet.

Turn off your Internet. Please close your Internet Browser(s) and refer to the instructions offline, as suggested in my introduction.

********************************PURGE/CLEANUP*********************************

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
  • Click "Options..."
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Put a check next to the following:
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Cookies
    • Delete Prefetch files
    • Cleanup! All Users
    • Click on the “Temporary Files” and uncheck the box for “Scan drives for file matching” if it’s checked.
  • Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

WARNING - CleanUp! will delete all files and folders contained within Temporary Directories. If you knowingly have items you would like to keep that are stored in these locations; Move Them Now!!!

********************************SAFE MODE*********************************

REBOOT TO SAFE MODE
  1. Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
  2. As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
  3. Continue to do so until the 'Windows Advanced Options' menu appears.
  4. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the menu item - Safe Mode.

*********************************SETTING UP********************************

Enable the viewing of Hidden files
  1. From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options>View tab.
  2. Enable the option for `Show hidden files and folder´
  3. Disable the option for `Hide file extensions for known types´
  4. Disable the option for `Hide protected operating system files´
  5. Click Yes to confirm & then click OK

Click Start>Run - type services.msc.
Locate the Network DDE DSMA (NetDDEdsma) service and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
Click the Stop button.
In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.

Then start HiJackThis & go to Config>Misc.Tools...> Delete an NT service...
In the popup box that appears, type in NetDDEdsma & click the OK button.

Please do the same for:

Service: Net Logon Service (NetLgn) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\wdfmgr.exe

********************************ADD/REMOVE********************************

Uninstall the following programs, if present, using Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs :
  • PowerStrip
    Zeno
    ErrorSafe Free
    IPWins

Please list any other programs that you do not recognise in your next post.

*********************************HJT FIXES**********************************

Run a scan with HiJackThis & select(tick) the following & click [Fix checked] :

Thanks for the help so far.

You replied that I have to antivirus programs running. I am only aware of 1 running --> AVG. The computer was purchased with a trial version of Norton that I thought I removed. I didn't see anything in the add/remove programs control panel.

Under add/remove programs in the control panel, I didn't find Powerstrip, Zeno, or ErrorSafe Free, but I did find and remove IPWins.

When deleting the individual files listed, I also found a file C:/defender23a.exe. Should I have deleted that file as well?

In your reply, you asked for three logs and then asked for another program to run (Look2Me-Destroyer) and an additional HJT log. I didn't run that as it seemed out of place (like from another post that was copied and edited for my problem). Let me know if I really need to run that program.

Here are the logs.

When deleting the individual files listed, I also found a file C:/defender23a.exe. Should I have deleted that file as well?
No need. Ewido took care of it
C:\defender23a.exe -> Downloader.VB.adw : Cleaned with backup

Download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:\) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder we just made. (C:\BFU).

Please reboot your computer to Safe Mode.

Run HJT and fix the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [URLLSTCK.exe] c:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\UrlLstCk.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe"
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Shell Extensions - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ir22l5fo1.dll (file missing)

Close HJT.

Go to Start > Run and type: regsvr32 /u occache.dll and click 'OK'.

Delete the following files:
  • c:\windows\system32\f3PSSavr.scr
    c:\windows\downloaded program files\f3initialsetup1.0.0.15.inf
    c:\windows\keyboard1.dat
    C:\Program Files\Snowball Wars\uninstaller.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\removefunc.ram

Go to Start > Run and type: regsvr32 occache.dll and click 'OK'.

Please delete the following folders:

c:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\
C:\Program Files\Snowball Wars\

Next please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon and select alcanshorty.bfu
  • Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Reboot back to Normal Mode.

I now require you to Download and run Look2meDestroyer. It was not a mistake the first time round. I want you to run it last intentionally.
Please run it now.

Here are the instructions if you need them again:

Please download Attribunes Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
  • Close all windows before continuing.
  • Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
  • When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button, your desktop icons will disappear, this is normal.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
  • You will receive a Done Scanning message, click OK.
  • When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Your computer will then shutdown.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the internet please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339' please download MSWINSCK.OCX from the link below and place it in your C:\Windows\System32 Directory.
http://www.ascentive.com/support/new...b/MSWINSCK.OCX

In your next post, please provide:
1. A New HJT Log
2. The Look2Me Destroyer Log
3. A New Panda Log
4. A description of how your system is now.

Thanks for the help... I was able to execute all of the instructions given. However, the folders C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ and C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ did not exist on the computer.

Regarding the system now... The original problems have not reappeared (Cyber Defender and Zeno popups).

Here are the logs....

Things are looking better, we just have a bit of tidying to do now.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

REGEDIT4

[-hkey_classes_root\FunWebProducts.DataControl]

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Close Notepad. Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

Naviagte to this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Cookies\
- and empty it's contents.

There are some redundant registry entries, lets see if we can clear them out:

Download CCleaner - and Install it.

*Note* On the install please uncheck the option "Add CCleaner Yahoo toolbar and use CCleaner from within IE"

Run CCleaner.
  • On the left, click 'Issues'.
  • Click 'Scan For Issues'.
*Ccleaner will check for issues in the registry and list them. You can monitor it's progress by the green percentage bar.*
  • Once it has reached 100%. Click 'Fix Selected Issues...'.
*At this point Ccleaner will ask if you want to back up the registry. This is your choice. If you choose to back up, save the back up file in the folder you installed Ccleaner*
  • Ccleaner will give you a description of each 'issue' found. Click 'Fix All Selected Issues' for speed.
  • Repeat the above steps until CCleaner no longer finds 'issues'.
  • Exit CCleaner.

Please report back on how things are.
Please re run Panda, this should now be the last time.

The system seems to be running much better... with no popups... (now if I could just figure out why the audio from CDs and DVDs seems to be slow or skipping when running from the DVD drive and music copied to the hard drive sounds fine, but I don't think that is an issue for this particular are of techsupport forum...)

Thanks for your help...

Here are the logs for Panda and HJT..

Your system is clean. I suggest you download and run both Ad-aware and Spybot from the list below.

Kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. CLEAR & RESET SYSTEM RESTORE'S CACHE - (System Volume Information folder)
Go to Start >> Run - type control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter
    • Tick on the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
    • Click Apply
Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click OK

  2. DISABLE THE VIEWING OF SYSTEM FILES
From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options> View tab.
    • Untick - Show hidden files and folder
    • Tick - Hide file extensions for known types
    • Tick - Hide protected operating system files
Click Yes to confirm & then click OK

  3. SECURING INTERNET EXPLORER
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
    • Select the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Select Custom Level .
        • Change 'Download signed ActiveX controls' to Prompt
        • Change 'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' to Disable
        • Change 'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe' to Disable
        • Change 'Installation of desktop items' to Prompt
        • Change 'Launching programs and files in an IFRAME' to Prompt
        • Change 'Navigate sub-frames across different domains' to Prompt
        • When all these changes have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Select OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  4. ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  5. FIREWALL
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here.

  6. Microsoft Windows Update
Visit windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  7. SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  8. AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  9. SPYWAREBLASTER
SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of malicious ActiveX, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. Blocks spyware/tracking cookies & restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites.

Unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here

  10. IE-SPYAD
IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here

  11. MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. It can be downloaded here - MVPS Hosts file

Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

  • Firefox - Use this alternate browser. Whilst Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

  • Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

  • Google Toolbar - Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

  • ERUNT - A useful freeware utility for users of Windows 2000/XP. It's made up of two parts - ERUNT & NTREGOPT.

ERUNT will create daily complete backups of your computer's Registry. Whilst System Restore does the same thing, a corrupt registry file may prevent Windows from booting & this effectively renders disables System Restore. With ERUNT, you're able to restore the damaged Registry.

NTREGOPT works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys. In other words, it compacts the Registry to a small size which allows Windows to load & perform faster.

  • Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.
A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats.

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay.
Have a safe & happy computing day.
