sticky mouse

have a question and I have been unable to find an answer for it .My moving mouse pointer and my animation, keyboard and some music files [doesn't seem to affect wavs or mp3s just the midis only ] freezes for a split second causing my moving mouse to seem like it is sticking . The midis sound like skips in a record or cd. The keyboard skips too causing the letters that I am typing to seem to be slow in comparison to my typing. Animation skips for a split second also making videos freeze or pause for split second. I have windows XP Home Edition version 2002 , service pack 2, Hewlett-packard pavilion, AMD Athlon {TM} XP 1800+, 1.53 GHZ, 352 MB of Ram, total Physical memory 384 MB, 135 mb available physical memory, also just updated my ActiveX controls after this started hoping that it might help, but didn't. This started after i moved my pc to another location in my home, but my pc has for as long as i can remember has done this on a smaller scale, in other words it would happen every once in a while, as now it is doing it every second or two, very annoying to say the least, Can anyone help, it would be very appreciated.
Thank you, Nana

Hello Nana123,

I'm happy to hear you fixed your mouse problem, but your computer still has some malware issues we'd like to resolve for you.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. Please do these steps in order and do not skip any.

Downloads
Download CWShredder and run it. Click Check for Update. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and then click OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Please download Ewido Anti-Malware
  • Install Ewido anti-malware
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen. When you run Ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!" -- just click OK.
  • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files:
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed (the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
  • Exit Ewido, do not run the scan yet!
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido: Ewido manual updates

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover. Save it in the same folder you made earlier (i.e., C:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet. *WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
  1. http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe
  2. http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Do not do anything with the extracted folder yet.

Disable AntiSpyware
Please disable Webroot SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean. To disable Webroot SpySweeper:
  • Go to the Options>Program Options
  • Uncheck Load at Windows Startup
  • Click Shields & uncheck all items there
  • Uncheck Home page shield.
Please disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection, as it may hinder the removal of some entries.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Reboot To Safe Mode
Reboot your system to Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears and choosing Safe Mode from the list. On some systems, this may be the F5 key so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on with your usual account. Make sure to close any open windows.

HijackThis Fixes
Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries (If they still exist, make sure you do not miss any):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.el.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us7.hpwis.com/

O20 - Winlogon Notify: WebCheck - C:\WINDOWS\system32\l0n40a5qed.dll (file missing)
Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Downloaded Tool Fixes
Please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the folder you installed BFU in (i.e, C:\BFU).
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon and select alcanshorty.bfu
  • Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
  • Click "Options..."
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Put a check next to the following:
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Cookies
    • Delete Prefetch files
    • Cleanup! All Users
    • Click on the “Temporary Files” and uncheck the box for “Scan drives for file matching” if it’s checked.
  • Click OK
  • Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. DO NOT reboot/logoff when prompted.
Open Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close Ewido anti-malware.

Open the l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread with your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Normal Mode
Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Online Virus Scan
Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan. Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner.
  1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. (Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it)
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now. Your computer will download of the 8 megabyte Panda's ActiveX control at this point.
  3. Begin the scan by selecting My Computer. Note:
    • Please turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.
    • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
    • Click on See report then click Save report.
    • You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
With Your Next Post...
Please paste the following logs:
  • Ewido report
  • l2mfix report
  • Panda Scan report
  • a new HiJackThis log taken after Panda finishes.

Hello Dillard,
I have had a few problems, so i will try and tell you each step that i took and then we can go from there.
1. i dowmloaded the cwshredder and scanned in normal mode and all was well
2. i downloaded the other programs and all is well.
3. I forgot to disable my windows defender.
4. I rebooted in safe mode and run the Hijack this and checked and fixed the entries that you told me to. And all went well
5.While still in safe mode I run the BFU and executed the alcanshorty.bfu.
the progress bar come up , and all went well
6. Cleanup could not run in safe mode, It would not run in safe mode, couldn't even find it.So i moved to next.
7. while still in safe mode i run the Edwido scanner and i will include the files with this post. All went well
8. 12mfix.bat could not run in safe mode, It would not run in safe mode, couldn't even find it.
9.I rebooted to normal and i didn't run the online virus because I did get to finish running all of the programs and I didn't know who many times i could use the virus scan
10. Also i didn't run the HJT , because of the other problems, so I hope you can help.

Hi Nana,

Let's try a different approach. Can you find Cleanup! in your Start menu?

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes. Please do these steps in order and do not skip any.

Download and Run Look2Me-Destroyer
Please download Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to your desktop.
  • Close all windows before continuing.
  • Double-click Look2Me-Destroyer.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run this program as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying Look2Me-Destroyer will close and re-open in approximately 10 seconds. Click OK
  • When Look2Me-Destroyer re-opens, click the Scan for L2M button. Your desktop icons will disappear -- this is normal.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove L2M button.
  • You will receive a Done Scanning message. Click OK.
  • When completed, you will receive this message: Done removing infected files! Look2Me-Destroyer will now shutdown your computer. Click OK.
  • Your computer will then shut down and turn off.
  • Turn your computer back on.
If you receive a message from your firewall about this program accessing the Internet, please allow it.

If you receive a runtime error '339', please download MSWINSCK.OCX, place it in your C:\Windows\System32 directory, and re-run the above steps.

Clear Internet Explorer Cookies
Clear your IE cookies. Start>Settings>Control Panel>Internet Options>General tab>under Temporary files, click on Delete Cookies.

Clear Firefox Cookies
Clear your Firefox cookies. From the open browser, go to Tools>Options>Privacy>Cookies>Clear.

With Your Next Post...
Please paste the following with your next reply:
  • the contents of C:\Look2Me-Destroyer.txt
  • a new HiJackThis log.
How is your computer running now?

Give me a few days to get back with you after i have finished with the tasks.I have one question? how do I put the MSWINSCK.OCX, back in the directory, if I have to put it back, that is , you will have to tell me in steps please.

Thanks for all your expert advice and work, Nana

Hi Nana,

We're looking really good. If I can get you to do one more fix for me and then run an online scan, we can verify that we got everything.

HijackThis Fixes
Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they still exist (make sure you do not miss any):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.el.com/

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.real.com/0874246a...p/RdxIE601.cab
Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Close HijackThis.

Online Scan
Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan.
  1. Click on the "Scan your PC" button located at the bottom of the page. A popup window should appear -- make sure you allow it if you have a popup blocker.
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state and click Scan Now.
  3. Your computer will download of the 8 megabyte Panda's ActiveX control at this point. Follow the on-screen directions if it asks you to install the ActiveX control.
  4. Begin the scan by selecting My Computer. Note:
    • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
    • Click on See report then click Save report.
    • You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.

Please paste the Panda Scan Report with a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Also please let me know how your computer is running.

Thanks!

Hi Nana,

The online scan did find a couple more things, but they're easy to clean up.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes. Please do these steps in order and do not skip any.

Run CleanUp!
Open CleanUp! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
  • Click "Options..."
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Put a check next to the following:
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Cookies
    • Delete Prefetch files
    • Cleanup! All Users
    • Click on the "Temporary Files" and uncheck the box for "Scan drives for file matching" if it's checked.
  • Click OK
  • Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

Deletions
Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE:

C:\windows\timessquare1.dat
C:\windows\uniq

* Congratulations! *

You should be clean now. If there aren't any more issues, you should be good to go but we still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Reset System Restore
  • Go to Start>Run, type SYSDM.CPL and press Enter.
  • Select the System Restore tab.
  • Check "Turn off System Restore on all drives" and click Apply.
  • Now uncheck the same option and click OK.

Re-enable Protection
Turn back on Webroot SpySweeper and Windows Defender if they're still disabled.

Webroot SpySweeper
  • Open Webroot SpySweeper
  • Go to the Options>Program Options
  • Check Load at Windows Startup
  • Click Shields & check all items there
  • Check Home page shield.
Windows Defender
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and check Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you check this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Microsoft Updates
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by malware. Using Internet Explorer, please go to Microsoft's Windows Update and download all of the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

Please ensure that you have already patched your system against the recent WMF exploit. Go to this page to get the KB912919 patch.

Enable Windows Auto Update:
  • Go to Start>Run, type WUAUCPL.CPL and press Enter.
  • Make sure "Keep my computer up to date" is checked.
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Update Java
We need to update your Java as it is out of date. Older versions can be a security risk as malware writers have been known exploit the weaknesses the code.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > Add/Remove Programs.
  • Sarch in the list for all previous installed versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment SE and/or J2SE Runtime Environment) and Uninstall/Remove them.
  • Download and install the newest version from Sun.
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java icon.
Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL three checked:
    • Downloaded Applets
    • Downloaded Applications
    • Other Files
Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window. NOTE: This deletes ALL of the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Malware Prevention
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. You might want to read Tony Klein's "How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?". At the minimum, you need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard to prevent spyware intrusions. I also recommend IE-Spyad, which places over 4,000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, thus helping prevent attempts to re-infect your system. All of these have no-strings-attached free versions available. However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use but often have malware in them.

Two more articles you may want to read at your leisure are "KRC Anti-Spyware Tutorial" and "Making Internet Explorer Safer".

The following is a list of free software we recommend:

Firewalls
A good firewall is the first-line of defense for your computer and will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you are unfamiliar with how a firewall works, you can read "Understanding and Using Firewalls". Here are some free firewalls available for personal use:Realtime Malware Prevention Tools
These programs actively watch your computer for possible malware-related changes and help prevent them. You can run more than one of these at a time.Passive Malware Prevention Tools
These programs configure your computer to prevent known malware-related changes. You can have more than one of these at a time and they take up minimal resources.
  • Spyware Blaster - check regularly for updates.
  • IE-Spyad - Install options #2 and #4. IE-Spyad places more than 4,000 dubious domains in the IE Restricted list, which impairs attempts to infect your system. It prevents any downloads from the sites although you will still be able to connect to them.
  • MVPS Hosts File - extract and double-click the mvps.bat file. This will replace your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements, preventing your computer from connecting to those sites.
  • McAfee SiteAdvisor - Helps to warn you before you interact with a dangerous web site. Works with both IE and Firefox.
Alternative Web Browsers
Using an alternative browser can help prevent malware from being installed without your knowledge, but may not work on all websites.Alternative Miscellaneous
Here are some alternatives that are worth looking into if you use their features:
  • Trillian - an Instant Messenger client that speaks to multiple services (AIM, Yahoo!, ICQ, MSN, etc.)
  • Miranda-IM - another Instant Messenger client with multiple service capabilities.
  • Desktop Weather - A taskbar weather program that is free and resource light.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Hello Shirley,

I'm just going to step in for a moment. I'd like to clarify the steps that you have done.

1. Did you run CleanUp yet?
2. Have you flushed the System Restore already?
3. Were you able to delete this file and folder:

C:\windows\ timessquare1.dat
C:\windows\ uniq
