Dell laptop "freezing"
Hi,
A couple of days ago my Dell Inspiron 6000, started freezing, When I boot it up it seems to load, and, then it will not let me into anything, after a few minutes the cursor freezes. The day before this happened I downloaded an anti key logger program, and, initialised AIRoboform, which had been on my desktop for a while, the only other thing loaded were a couple of genuine Serif photo programs. I'm not a techie so if any one has a solution could you make it very very simple, Thanks Joe |

Hi joemac278
Please download HijackThis . This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded. Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\ Run a scan and save the log file. Post the contents of the file here in this thread. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless. Make sure to include the System information at the top of the log as well. You may also like to subscribe to this thread (thread tools > subscriptions) so you are notified as soon as you receive a response. |

Thanks for your response,
I'm not sure how I can do this since I can't get access to my laptop, I am using my desktop to access and reply to the forum, My BT Broadband is currently down, so I am using a dial up connection, Joe |

Hi Joe
If possible use your desktop to download the file and transfer to the laptop using floppy, usb stick, cd or other media. The zip is only 245kb so won't take long to download even with dialup. You can still boot the laptop even though it just freezes???? |

Hi Joe
Which Operating System is on the laptop?? Can you access Task Manger (ctrl-alt-del)? If so is there any processes in particular eating up the CPU time? Do you have the same problem in Safe Mode? |

Hi Joe
To access safe mode shut down the PC and when you boot up tap the F8 key repeatedly until the menu apppears. Scroll using the arrow keys and select Safe mode. Let me know if the mouse freezes while in safe mode. |

This is my Highjack This file,
Whilst in safe mode, I removed the keylogger program, and the AIRoboform progam, and, now my laptop seems to be OK, can you check my file and tell me if there is anything else I should do, and if these programs were causing the problem, Thanks, Joe gfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 16:57:04, on 10/06/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\ZcfgSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\DOCUME~1\JOEMCS~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 3 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml?id=1992 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.wanadoo.co.uk/ R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml?id=1992 R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.euro.dell.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Wanadoo O2 - BHO: Trend Micro Antifraud Toolbar - {06647158-359E-4D10-A8DE-E6145DA90BE9} - C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\INTERN~1\PccIeBar.dll O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: SpywareGuard Download Protection - {4A368E80-174F-4872-96B5-0B27DDD11DB2} - C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\dlprotect.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\SDHelper.dll O2 - BHO: DriveLetterAccess - {5CA3D70E-1895-11CF-8E15-001234567890} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswshx.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {724d43a9-0d85-11d4-9908-00400523e39a} - C:\Program Files\Siber Systems\AI RoboForm\roboform.dll O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar2.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar2.dll O3 - Toolbar: Trend Micro Antifraud Toolbar - {871F91FD-3A92-4988-A842-16AB2CFF5AF1} - C:\PROGRA~1\TRENDM~1\INTERN~1\PccIeBar.dll O3 - Toolbar: &RoboForm - {724d43a0-0d85-11d4-9908-00400523e39a} - C:\Program Files\Siber Systems\AI RoboForm\roboform.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Apoint] C:\Program Files\Apoint\Apoint.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxtray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxhkcmd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxpers] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelWireless] C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\ifrmewrk.exe /tf Intel PROSet/Wireless O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dell QuickSet] C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\quickset.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDLauncher] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DMXLauncher] C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\DMXLauncher.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dla] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\ISUSPM.exe -startup O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pccguide.exe] "C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 2006\pccguide.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SnoopFreeUI] SnoopFreeUI.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Zone Labs Client] C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Anti-keylogger] C:\Program Files\Anti-keylogger\Anti-keylogger.exe /autorun O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DellSupport] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe" /startup O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Google Desktop Search] "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe" /startup O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [RoboForm] "C:\Program Files\Siber Systems\AI RoboForm\RoboTaskBarIcon.exe" O4 - Startup: SpywareGuard.lnk = C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgmain.exe O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ? Hi Joe
You may find it easier to print out these instructions or view them on your desktop while carrying them out on the laptop. Please read the instructions carefully before you begin and if there is anything you do not understand then please post your questions here before beginning. It is important you follow the instructions in the exact order stated. I notice that you have more than one anti-virus programs on your machine (Trend Micro & Symantec). That's not a good idea!! This messes up the machine pretty badly. Alike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other & may produce undesirable results. Please uninstall ALL leaving only one of them. ALL the antivirus programs must be removed via add/remove program. For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this: re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstall## Do NOT proceed with the rest of the fix until you have resolved the dual antivirus programs ## You are running Hijack This from a temporary directory. It needs to be in a permanent folder. Please go into Windows Explorer, click on C: then click on File > New > Folder and call it HJT , or another name of your choice. Extract(unzip) HijackThis to the new folder. The program creates backup files that we may need to use later. If the program is in a Temporary folder, files may be deleted by you or automatically if your system is set to empty temp files. Both RoboForm and Antikeylogger still appear to be present on the laptop. Please uninstall them from normal mode using Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. I see you already have Ewido installed. You will need to make sure you have the latest definitions.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido. Reboot in Safe Mode (by repeatedly tapping F8 until the menu appears) Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option: * "Perform action on all infections" * Choose clean and click OK. Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop ** Ewido scan would require at least an hour. I suggest that you go grab a cup of coffee & do something else while you wait for it to complete. You don't seem to have many running processes which could indicate the log was taken while in safe mode. To be sure it's clean we need a HijackThis log from normal mode. Could you also check that you do not have Selective startup enabled as this prevents us from seeing everything. To do this: Go to Start>Run type msconfig and press Enter. Select Normal Startup - Load all Device Drivers and Services Reboot in Normal mode Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Scan with HijackThis Post the Panda Scan report and a new HijackThis log Required Logs Ewido report Panda report new HijackThis log (from normal mode) |

Let me know if ZA is enough to protect my computer, if not, what would you recommend? Thanks again, Joe |

Hi Joe
If your version of Zone Alarm is Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite or Zone Alarm Anti-Virus then you have anti-virus protection. Remember that if you have the Anti-Virus version to enable your Windows Firewall or obtain an alternative such as Zone Alarm Free Edition. If you have any other Zone Alarm version then you have NO anti-virus protection. You should deal with this right away. Do not continue until you have anti-virus protection. The following provide this protection remember only to install 1. AVG Anti-virus Avast Home Edition Open Internet Explorer and select Tools > Internet Options on the General tab under Temporary Internet Files select Delete Cookies and OK. I see you have uninstalled SnoopFreeUI and Antikeylogger as well as the RoboForm. Install SnoopFreeUI and Antikeylogger 1 at a time and see if the mouse freeze issue returns. As both these products are monitoring the same things it may well have been a conflict between them which caused the problem. The other possible cause could be the fact that RoboForm will monitor and save your keystrokes which both the antikeyloggers are trying to protect against. Other than that your logs look clean. If there are no more issues then you should be good to go. We have a few issues to deal with 1st. Kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats. It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay. Have a safe & happy computing day. ![]() Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved. |
