Before you do anything else, create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

Run HijackThis. Click "Do a System Scan Only", and place a check next to the following items (if found):

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
O1 - Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{E6F756D3-A1F8-4567-9D0D-07CE2594F152}: NameServer = 85.255.116.153,85.255.112.12

Click FIX CHECKED. Close HijackThis.

Finally, please post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt ) at the end of this fix.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, we need you to do this:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"
and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And now this:

IMPORTANT!:

Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2) (SP2). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system. At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it’s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

**Note** If you're having trouble locating the service pack SP1a here is a direct link to download it from..

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...p1a_en_x86.exe

Thank you for your cooperation.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Hijack This and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please return with results from:

FixWareout
smitfraudfix

OK, before we continue, I need you to help me help you.

You're not following all the instructions.

HJT is still in TEMP, meaning you're running it from a zipped folder and backups are not being saved. It needs to be extracted to it's own folder...or delete that version, ang get this self-extracting version:

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS\

Double click on HijackThis.exe to run the program.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file in the here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Next:

IMPORTANT!!!!

Either use the direct link to SP1 I gave you before, and post a new HJT log,

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...p1a_en_x86.exe

or do this:

Please go HERE (Microsoft website) using Internet Explorer (not Firefox or any other browser as they won't work)
  • Click on Windows Validation Assistant
  • Click on the Validate Now button.
  • Be patient while the ActiveX loads, do not click on any links.
  • Read the instructions on this page while it's loading. You will be prompted to install - click YES.
  • Enter your product key then click continue
  • When it says "Validation Complete" please click Continue to return to your previous activity
  • Copy what it says and paste it here.

Was it purchased from a company or an individual? I'm sorry to say that at this point you need to call the vendor, or Microsoft, and explain the situation.

Four years ago, this product should have had Service Pack 1 installed on it.

(800) MICROSOFT (642-7676)

http://www.emachines.com/

http://www.emachines.com/corporate/contacts.html

To help clean your machine just a bit more, please do this:

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Until SP1 is on this machine, I can offer no more assistance. When you get the issue resolved, please post back with a new HJT log, showing that SP1 has been installed.

Well, as I say.....our forum's policy is to stop at this point until you've addressed the lack of Service Pack upgrades.

Contact Circuit City (although it being 4 years old, they may not have any help to offer), or Microsoft.

On the top, or side or back of the machine should be a sticker, with the machine's key code. It may be in the original documentation you received with the machine, but most manufacturers place one on the case.

A Microsoft representative should be able to help you out, and we can go forward from there.

I'm sorry to put you through all this, but it's for the good of your machine as well. Without the latest critical updates, this machine is wide open to re-infection, and all our work will have been for naught.
