Critical Security Popup... Need Help
A popup keeps coming up saying:
"Your computer is infected! Critical System Error! Sytem detected virus activities. They may cause critical system failure. Please, use antimalware software to clean and protect your system from parasite programs. Click here to get all available software." Right now, computer's deathly slow, and everytime I try to open up Internet Explorer, it doesn't open up a window, but it is laying dormant in the Processes tab when I Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Thanks! Hi vagrant_ed and welcome to the TSF Security Forum.
You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools) so that you are notified when you receive a reply. Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes. Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed. Show Hidden Files Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option. Downloads Please download Cleanup! or use this Alternate Link if the main link does not work and install it. You will use this later. *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW! Download Ewido Anti-Malware
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido. When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido. Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Do not use it yet! Reboot Reboot your system in Safe Mode.
Uninstall Programmes Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs (if present): ViewMgr is an advertising program by Viewpoint. This process monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the authors. HijackThis Entries Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (if they still exist) (make sure you do not miss any) R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/...ch/search.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/...ch/search.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com O2 - BHO: Viewpoint Toolbar BHO - {A7327C09-B521-4EDB-8509-7D2660C9EC98} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar V35\ViewBarBHO.dll O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar V35\ViewBar.dll O3 - Toolbar: SecurityToolbar - {736b5468-bdad-41be-92d0-22ae2ddf7bcb} - C:\Program Files\Security Toolbar\Security Toolbar.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewpointPhotosDeviceConnect] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar V35\FotomatDeviceConnect.exe O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar V35\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked. File Deletions Delete the following Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist. C:\Program Files\Viewpoint C:\Program Files\Security Toolbar Run SmitfraudFix Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool. Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. You will be prompted : " Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter. The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question " Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter. A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode. The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:rapport.txt) or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply. Run CleanUp! *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does NOT make backups. If you have any files in any TEMP directory and you need to keep them, then please MOVE THEM NOW! Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from Start > All Programs). Set the program up as follows: Click Options Move the slider button down to Custom CleanUp! Check the following:
Click OK, Press the CleanUp! button to start the program and DO NOT REBOOT when prompted. Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these BEFORE running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility. Go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present: • "Security Info" • "Warning Message" • "Security Desktop" • "Warning Homepage" • "Desktop Uninstall" Also make sure the 'Lock desktop items' box is unticked. Click OK, and then Click Apply, then OK. Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin. Run Ewido Run Ewido with it's updated definitions (...it's important that all windows must be closed)
NOTE: Ewido scan will require at least an hour. Reboot Reboot your system in Normal Mode. SmitfraudFix - Additional Items Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter **Note** This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" - if you want them back, you have to add them back to the Trusted Sites again. Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection. Online Scan Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner. 1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. *Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it * 2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place * Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report. *Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Logs required rapport.txt Ewido Log Panda Log HijackThis Log Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems.

*The files starting with R1-HKCU, O3-Security Toolbar, O4-ViewMgr and O8-Extra context menu weren't on the hijackthis to delete in safe mode.
*I couldn't delete "viewpointphotosshellext.dll" because Access was denied. *There were none of those control panel files to delete. *The system performance is much better, as in Internet Explorer is working and the little Critical System Error popup is gone. *However, there's a shortcut everytime I reboot that is either a green or blue shield with a white exclamation point in the middle that re-adds itself. Right now the current one is a blue shield called Online Security Guide and it refers to the website http://onlinesecuritysolution.net/ Thanks again! Hi again
Don’t go near those ‘Security’ programmes – they are rogueware – see here. Did you delete the Viewpoint folder? If not please do so – you may have to boot to Safe Mode. Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (if they still exist) (make sure you do not miss any) R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/...ch/search.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar V35\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked. Delete the following Files indicated in RED if they still exist. c:\documents and settings\all users\desktop\Online Security Guide.url C:\Documents and Settings\KERR FAMILY\Favorites\Antivirus Test Online.url Online Scan Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky WebScanner Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Please post back with the Kaspersky Log and a fresh HijackThis Log. Please also let me know how your system is performing now and if you have any specific problems.

*The computer itself is running fine. I couldn't delete the viewpoint folder [and the respective file inside] in safe mode. It said that the file ViepointPhotosShellExt.dll was in use. The only process that looked funny was one called devldr32.exe.
*I've noticed in my friend's computer, too, that there are trojans in the System Volume Infomation folder. Is that a new trend? *Kaspersky wouldn't clean the files below, but instead, skipped them. Hi again
The devldr32.exe file is related to Creative Labs soundcards – it’s legit. The Trojans in System Volume are being held in the System Restore points – we’ll flush them out later. Let’s get rid of that Viewpoint file. Open HijackThis and click on Config > Misc Tools. Now look for the button ‘Delete a file on reboot’. Click the button and a Browse window will open. You need to navigate to where the file is located – in this case C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\. Then click on the file name – HijackThis will ask you to reboot – say ‘Yes’. After the reboot, you should be able to delete the Viewpoint folder. Let me know how that goes.

Hi again
Well done. Any more problems? If not we’ll just tidy up and I’ll let you go, along with my recommendations for staying safe and secure. Reset Hidden/System Files To reset your hidden and system files:
System Restore To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK. To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK. This will create a new Restore Point. IMPORTANT!!! Please ensure that Windows is patched against the WMF exploit. This is a dangerous vulnerability that opens the door to multiple infections; and a possible reason you were infected. Visit Window's Update to get the KB912919 patch. Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs: Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. Ad-aware Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. IE-SPYAD IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here. SnoopFree SnoopFree is a real time monitor that notifies you when a programme wants to record your keystrokes or read your screen. MVPS Hosts File The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. Note that if you use a company provided HOSTS file you should not use the MVPS HOSTS file. Alternate Browsers Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer Firefox Opera Firewalls A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use: Sygate Personal Firewall ZoneAlarm Tiny Personal Firewall Anti Virus Software It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners: Anti-Spyware Tutorial Here are two very good free Antivirus products which are available: Avast! AVG It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Other Protection Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here: Using Winpatrol to protect your computer. In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles How Did I Get Infected In The First Place? The Anti-Spyware Tutorial. Making Internet Explorer Safer. Keep clean and safe and enjoy your computing! Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
