Hijack Log : program hanging issues

Hi
I have had nothing ut a constant struggle trying to get my girlfriends computer to operating condition. After removal of all the spyware, adware, bots, trojans, virii, worms. It finally works at a tollerable level. with it being the girlfriend's pc, there's no chance at formatting and reinstall. sothis is where I'm stuck.

I just recently installed SP2, and decided to finish it off with installing all other availible updates. All the updates will install seperatly with the exception of Windows Virtual Machine (VM) and Windows Defender; those hang midway through the installtion process.

I have stripped the processes down to only running what XP needs to run, and have done constant Ant-Vi/Spy/AD scans as well as Chkdsk, and Scannow SFC. Also I did about 4 defragments to totally make everything together. They still will not install.

Also she runs Kazaalite Ressurection and it will load in the taskbar, but if you click on it to view the window, it half loads. No menu, no tabs, just a titled white box.

I was thinking maybe all three defender, VM, and kazaa might be accessing a singular file that might have been currupted. Is that possible and how would i find out what file that is? Or any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks

-Cat

Did you edit these entries?
O17 - HKLM\System\CS3\Services\Tcpip\..\{0689CEC2-8D77-4684-9520-B9193268E020}: NameServer = (ipstuff)

As long as you know the IP is legit, this is fine, I just need to make sure that this is what you did.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

P2P - I see you have P2P software installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It is certainly contributing to your current situation. I’ll leave the decision to you.

Viewing Hidden Files
Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Downloads(make sure to save these in a permanent location)
Cleanup!- Install it. You will use this later.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups.

Ewido Anti-Malware
  • Install Ewido Security Suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

HijackThis!
Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt). Please post the contents of this file along with a new Hijackthis log in your next post.

HijackThis!
Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{9777EDF4-513B-441D-B23B-FFF0EEF8F4A7}: NameServer = 85.255.113.197 85.255.112.128

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Reboot and post a new log. If it returns we'll have to dig for remnants of Wareout.

Your log appears to be clean. If you still have any problems let me know and we will work on diagnosing those through other means. If not, there are just a few more things to go through to finish this off and help prevent future infections. Please post one more time even if you have no problems so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Disabling the Viewing of Hidden and System Files
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Setting a new Restore Point
Go to Start >> Run - type control sysdm.cpl,,4 & press Enter.
  • Tick the checkbox - Turn off System Restore on all drives
  • Click Apply
  • Turn it back 'On' by unticking the same checkbox & click OK

Windows Update
Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at Microsoft Update Site.

Prevention
A good virus scanner is a necessity in today's computer environment. Many virus scanners include active components that protect you from infection without even running a scan. Some good free antivirus programs include:
AVG Free
Avast! Home Edition (Antivirus & Firewall)
AntiVir

A firewall is the first line of defense standing between the internet and your computer. Some good free firewalls are:
Zone Alarm
Outpost
Tiny Personal Firewall
Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall

Adaware SE and Spybot SD are a pair of anti-spyware scanners that should be run every week or two. Although there is some overlap there are many pieces of malware that is caught by one of these and not the other, therefore it is recommended you use both to compliment each other. Spybot also contains two other useful pieces. The first is "Immunize", this helps protect your computer against known exploits. The second is "TeaTimer", with this feature enabled you will receive notifications of all changes to the registry such as programs adding themselves to start-up and you default search page being changed.

Spyware Blaster is a powerful tool that prevents "drive-by" downloads and other unwanted installations. It also uses no system resources, run it once and you're all set. Spyware Guard Is a realtime protection engine to guard your computer from spyware. This program does for spyware what an antivirus program does for viruses.

IE-Spyad is a program that only needs to be run once to protect you from many malicious sites. It adds domains of known adware companies into the Restricted List of Internet Explorer, preventing them from performing malicious actions on your PC.

The MVPS HOSTS file is a file you can download and use to replace your regular hosts file. It prevents many sites from performing malicious actions by blocking the sites from ever being accessed.

Together these programs form a powerful barrier between the Internet and your computer. However, all the programs stand alone and feel free to eliminate any you are not comfortable with. Any protection you add to your PC is better than no protection at all.

Alternative Programs
Here are some alternatives that are either less suceptible than others to malware or don't contain malware where similar programs do.

Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

Desktop Weather - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light.

Firefox - This is an increasingly popular alternate browser. Whilst Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.

Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

I'm still having problems with installations.

I tried to update Spybot from 1.3 to 1.4, it asks for the language, and...nothing else comes up,but a setup window appears on the taskbar but isnt accessable. That's usually what happens with all installations here lately.

Same goes for Windows update still. The only way I was able to install Ewido in the first place was in safe mode. It also hung while running Windows normally. They either hang or fail on installation. And there is 4 gigs free on the HDD.

Click Start>Run and type in eventvwr.msc

What we're looking for are the Errors from the System and Application viewers. You'll see something like this: Application Error...

Locate the ones with a big red X that say error. Double click to open it. Hit the Tablet (Says Copy to Clipboard if you hover mouse over it) and then CTRL+V to paste the info into the post.

Alright I see a couple things in there which may help but I need some more information first.

Open HijackThis, click Config, then click Misc Tools.
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Let's see if reinstalling the Windows Installer solves the problem.

Download the Windows Installer 3.1 Installer from here. Run the installer, then Restart your computer. If this won't install please let me know.

This should solve the problem with the update showing in your Event Viewer log.
  • Go to C:\Windows\System32 and locate the file xpsp3res.dll
  • Rename it to xpsp3.dll.bak
  • Restart the computer
  • Go to the Windows Update Site and click Custom
  • The following two items should show up in the list: KB896344 and KB890046
  • Only Select KB896344 and install it.
  • Restart the computer again
  • Return to the Windows Update Site and click Custom
  • Now let it install KB890046 (This adds back in the xpsp3res.dll file)
  • Restart the computer again.

I've done that. What should i do next? The VM update still stalls. I know Sun's is better regardless, but the MS one should work.

Can you get me the number of the update which is failing to install? eg. KB123456

Are you still having trouble with other non-update installs?

Let's get rid of Norton first. Having two AV's on your system can cause all sorts of strange problems, especially when Norton is involved.

Please open this page in Internet Explorer. Click the button that says "Run it Now". Install any required ActiveX controls and follow any prompts given.
