Fake alert virus, now I can't go online

Hi, I've been trying to find the name of a virus I got last night and what I can do about it... I was on my laptop at the school library and I got an alert that looked like the Windows anti-virus program (I forget what it's called, but its the one with the castles) saying I had several viruses I needed to get rid of. I panicked and without thinking pressed something that downloaded a document that started with C followed by random numbers and letters. The internet connection worked fine at the library, but when I got home I found I couldn't go online. I deleted the document, ran Avast (which after a thorough scan didn't detect anything), and did System Restore.

The weird thing is it says I am connected but any website I go to, I get a page error message. I'm typing this in the computer lab at my apartment, so I know it's not a problem with Mediacom, and when I try to diagnose it it says something about Domain Server.

I've been trying to search for what it could have been and how to fix it without any luck, I appreciate any help!

Re: Fake alert virus, now I can't go online

Hello ArcticBanana Welcome to the TSF Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum. I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

After 3 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  1. Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  2. Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  3. Double click or on your desktop.
  4. Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  5. You may see this window. If you do, click No.

  6. Click on and wait for the scan to finish.
  7. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  8. Push and save the logfile to your desktop.
  9. Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

Thanks,

thewall
