Fake alert virus, now I can't go online
Hi, I've been trying to find the name of a virus I got last night and what I can do about it... I was on my laptop at the school library and I got an alert that looked like the Windows anti-virus program (I forget what it's called, but its the one with the castles) saying I had several viruses I needed to get rid of. I panicked and without thinking pressed something that downloaded a document that started with C followed by random numbers and letters. The internet connection worked fine at the library, but when I got home I found I couldn't go online. I deleted the document, ran Avast (which after a thorough scan didn't detect anything), and did System Restore.
The weird thing is it says I am connected but any website I go to, I get a page error message. I'm typing this in the computer lab at my apartment, so I know it's not a problem with Mediacom, and when I try to diagnose it it says something about Domain Server. I've been trying to search for what it could have been and how to fix it without any luck, I appreciate any help! |

Re: Fake alert virus, now I can't go online
Hello ArcticBanana Welcome to the TSF Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum. I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system.
I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process. After 3 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed. ![]() Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here. Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
Thanks, thewall |
