My System

Re: pop ups invading pc

Hi and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your logs are clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

We'll begin with ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

NOTE: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you - please let me know.

Re: pop ups invading pc

thanks for the help, been mega busy so the pc has been silent

installed windows xp recovery and ran combofix, but combofix doesnt seem to be doing anything.
the "preparing to run" image pops up then goes away and nothing,
looking on task manager, combofix creates a process which runs but disappears when the screen disappears, how long does combofix take to get to the disclaimer screen, am i just not being patient enough?

also do i leave my pc connected to the internet with all the firewalls and anti-virus/spyware disabled? is that not asking for trouble?
regards paul

Re: pop ups invading pc

Hi Paul

Combofix will disconnect your system from the internet while it runs. When it reboots the PC, you will have your connection, and security restored.

Delete your existing version and let's try an updated version.

Download from here - -> http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

and run as per my earlier instructions.

Re: pop ups invading pc

Well it would, but let's not jump to that just yet. Let's try this scanner - it may well show us what the problem is here.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop . Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - minimised > extra.txt and maximised > main.txt.
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt back in this thread (do not attach it).
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.

To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.
