suspicious program message at shutdown

Hello,

Recently I've encountered a couple of times where I've shut down the computer and I get an error message saying that the program "sw" is not closing. I dug around the internets a little bit, and have found mention of trojans, keyloggers, and malware associated with "sw" and "SilentSpy." So, I'm attaching my logs in hopes that something isn't there, or if there is something bad, that you can help me get rid of it.

See attached. Other than Windows Media Player being a bit slower and clunkier than normal, I haven't noticed any strange performance problems; I did have a hard freeze earlier in the week which I attributed to overheating from dust building up in the case. (A shutdown, opening of the case, and blasts of compressed air fixed the problem, as usual.)

I do have access to a Windows installation CD, however it was not the CD that I used for this desktop (Windows was pre-loaded onto it when I purchased it ages ago.)

Anything evil in these logs?

Re: suspicious program message at shutdown

Thank you - I was just thinking that since it had been over a whole week, I should bump this thread.

Here is a fresh DDS scan, as requested. As an aside, I recently ran a Malwarebytes scan as well, which came up empty...

Let me know if there is anything suspicious...thanks...

Re: suspicious program message at shutdown

Hi,

I cannot see anything in the log related to SilentSpy or anything else that would cause that error. It could be related to Macromedia's ShockWave. Let's have a look with another scanner.
  • Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the tool and click Continue at the disclaimer.
  • When the scan completes it will open a log named log.txt maximized, and a log named info.txt minimized.
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt here.

Re: suspicious program message at shutdown

Hi,

I don't see any malware. As I mentioned earlier, it probably was ShockWave related. The following can be fixed with HijackThis, but not necessarily malware. They are orphaned registry entries. AlcxMonitor doesn't need to load at startup. It's related to Realtek, gathering information about the user. Do not delete the file though, it's needed for the sound effects.

While Spybot's TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent tools from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.

  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • If TeaTimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

=======================

Run HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0011-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_11) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0012-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_12) -

Close all browsers and windows and click on "fix checked".

===========================

Open notepad. It must be notepad, not wordpad.
Copy and paste the text inside the code box below into notepad, including the blank line at the end. Make sure that wordwrap is turned off in notepad - click the format menu and uncheck wordwrap.
Choose file save as and set file type to all files.
Type fixreg.reg in the file name and save it to your desktop. It should look like this:

Code:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\authorizedapplications\list]
"C:\Program Files\uTorrent\uTorrent.exe"=-
"C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\4_pinnew.exe"=-
Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Close notepad. Make sure that all windows are closed.

Find the fixreg.reg file on your desktop.
Double click it.
It will then ask if you want the file merged to your registry.
Answer yes.

Reboot your computer.

=========================

Let's have an online scan too. Clean the temp files first using the following tool to cut down on the scanning time:

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
It's normal after running TFC cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

=========================

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on Settings. Uncheck Mail databases.
  • Next, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

Note for Internet Explorer 8 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

========================

Please post back with the fresh HijackThis log and the Kaspersky report. By the way, you are still on Service Pack 2. Service Pack3 was released a while ago. Is there any reason why you did not update your operating system?

Re: suspicious program message at shutdown

Couple of questions/notes...

- I've gone ahead and run HJT and removed those entries you recommended. There was a third Java entry which you told me not to get rid of, but which looked to be of a similar ilk (and an earlier number than the others). Just an FYI...

- I have disabled TeaTimer some time ago, having read so many people expressing disappointment over it...does it still show as running in the logs? From what I recollect, I did disable it in the method you recommended...

- regarding still being on SP2, I've been meaning to do the upgrade to SP3, but work has been busy, so I haven't been able to devote the time to fixing the desktop as I should. Though I have been keeping up with the Windows security updates when I get prompts for those...

That said, I unfortunately won't be able to do the other steps and run the Kaspersky online scan until Thursday evening at the earliest. (That scan takes a long while, doesn't it?) But I am at least relieved that you haven't seen anything horrible in the logs thus far....I will post back when I have the new HJT and Kaspersky logs...

That's fine.

Yes, it does. This line in DDS.txt indicates that TeaTimer was running:

Quote:
uRun: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] c:\program files\spybot - search & destroy\TeaTimer.exe

Microsoft issues those service packs to remedy the vulnerabilities in the system. Therefore, it's advisable that you update your system with the latest patches. This page seems to cover everything you need to know before installing SP3. Also, have a look at here if you'd rather do an offline installation.

That's fine. I shall be travelling on Thursday and won't be able to check your logs until sometime in the evening.

Do you still get the sw message at shut down, or was it a one-time event? Make sure that you close all running programs before shutting down.
