Uh-oh
Yeah, I think a virus may have totally destroyed my laptop. Not too long ago I used a music provider service called Ruckus which I had not used in awhile, and it turns out in that length of time I had not used it, the Ruckus website and its home website/user login servers had been "shut down" but not removed from service. So, when I started up the Ruckus player it immediately redirected me to login to their server. Lo and behold, Symantec flips out and a horde of trojans and Infostealers start appearing. I immediately close the browser and the Ruckus player, then fire up MalwareBytes and Symentec and run a dual scan. I get several hundred positive returns from MBAB, all of which are cleaned. That seems okay, but after a reboot I continue working on my laptop and Symantec keeps popping up with the same multitude of Infostealers I had before.
OK, so I check out this forum and other resources and completely remove those pesky Infostealers, no problem. My computer runs fine, I shut it off for the day. Next day, I boot up again. Hmm, several on-startup EXE files refuse to run. Something about paths and permission. Strange, let's go to the internet and see what that means. Double click Firefox and...same error message, about paths and permissions and stuff I'm unfamiliar with. Well that's odd. I don't need the internet anyway, I'll just go to what I had originally planned on doing, so I open up my music editor/mixer and...same error message. Now I'm worried. Maybe I still have a virus, or a new one snuck past me. I had just gotten Avast! and ran a full scan, with no problems. So I try to load MBAB again, and guess what? Same old song and dance. Now I'm not just worried, I'm panicking. I go to Add/Remove Programs. Same message. I attempt System Restore. Same message. And the exact message reads: Quote:
![]() I guess you'll need to know my specs, it's XP SP 2 on a Dell Inspiron 1501, 2 GB RAM, 2 GHz AMD Turion Mobile, Vanilla video and sound cards, don't think the problem is there though. So that's my situation, sorry about the novel. I'm convinced that my computer has bit the dust, and my only hope is reinstalling Windows. I'm not really concerned about data loss, as I was able to backup all essentials to my main PC with no problem. Besides, that stupid laptop has caused me nothing but grief for 3 years, and I'm quite ready to run it over in my truck. ![]() Incidentally, if you have Ruckus on your computer, remove it immediately. My guess is that some clever script kiddies turned their server into a malware heaven. |
