Cool [SOLVED] PC Infected by Rootkit

My PC recently became infected with one or more trojans. I use McAfee Internet Security Suite. McAfee was able to detect the trojans, but not remove them. Now McAfee reports that my PC is infected by 2 viruses or trojans. I believe that one is the Generic Rootkit.d!rootkit trojan. I am not sure what the other one is. Now when I run the McAfee Quickscan I receive an error message from McAfee about the ScanOnDemand.exe. If I leave that message box open and do not click on the "OK" button to acknowledge the message, then my PC crashes. I get the blue screen of death. Then, when I boot after the PC crashes the PC will hang before the log on prompt is displayed. I shut down the PC and boot again and then I am able to get to the log on prompt and log on to my PC. Please help me to rid my PC of these problems.

Thank you very much for your willingness to help me.

Here is the content of the DDS.txt file. I have attached the Attach.zip file that contains the Attach.txt and ARK.txt files, too.

Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

Hello.

Yes, you do have a rootkit infection. Please take a read below. If you still wish to continue then please follow the instructions on running Combofix.

nfortunatly One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. If you wish to continue follow the steps below.

Download and Run ComboFix

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Please refer to this page for full instructions on how to run ComboFix.
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click ComboFix.exe to start the program. Agree to the prompts.
  • When ComboFix is finished, a log report (C:\ComboFix.txt) will open. Post back with it.
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.

ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may call it to stall.

Smile Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

First of all, thank you very much for your help.

Secondly, ugh. That is bad news. What a drag.

Thirdly, I ran ComboFix according to your instructions. Actually, it took 3 attempts. I downloaded the ComboFix program from the first 2 links that you provided, but the program would not run on my PC for some reason. Perhaps McAfee was interfering with the ability of those programs to run. I turned off all of the McAfee security features (firewall, anti-virus, script blocking, anti-spyware) downloaded the ComboFix program from the 3rd link, and saved it as ComboFix2.exe. That seemed to do the trick. I disconnected my PC from the Internet while I ran ComboFix. I believe that ComboFix corrected the problem. See the ComboFix.txt post below.

I am not sure yet what I plan to do with regard to the possibility that my PC has been compromised. I may rebuild my system from scratch. However, I have a backup from before the problem occurred, which I created using Norton Ghost. I could possibly restore from that backup. The reason why I did not simply restore from the backup after the problem occurred was because the problems caused by the trojan seemed to affect Norton Ghost, too. Norton Ghost reported to me that it could not find the target location for the backup job, so I chose the path of caution and decided not to tamper with my one and only backup.

I am going to try to run McAfee anti-virus again after I complete this post. The "OnDemandScan.exe" program crashed when I tried to run the anti-virus program while the PC was infected. Hopefully the anti-virus program will work properly now. I will restart my system a few times to see if it shuts down and boots properly, too. The PC hung sometimes when I shut it down and when I booted it up, which forced me to do a hard shut down in order to bypass that problem.

I really appreciate your help and advice.

Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

Hello and sorry for the delay.

Please continue with running Malwarebytes. Then, once it's done, please take a new DDS run and post back with both logs.

Just curious, how is your computer running afterwards?

Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware
If you already have MBAM installed, simply update and run a quick scan.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

You can refer to this page which has a visual of the instructions above.

Smile Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

Thank you, EB. So far so good. My PC boots, shuts down, and restarts normally now. My system has not crashed since I ran the ComboFix program. McAfee no longer crashes, also. I have run multiple scans with McAfee successfully. McAfee found the following trojans at first. Now it does not find any more malware.

DNSChanger!n trojan at C:\QOOBOX\Quarantine\C\Windows\System32\GXVXCKVFPMYOENJLYDAFEPWJNPTUFXDGWWFIN.DLL.VIR

Generic.dx!fe trojan at C:\QOOBOX\Quarantine\C\Windows\System32\GXVXCAWYKTPXLGSXYQECNEQMTTSAQJBUXWAPL.DLL.VIR

DNSChanger.ad trojan at C:\QOOBOX\Quarantine\C\Windows\System32\drivers\GXVXCTVUUFNMXEFODARBQPVWPVURSTDGOWTAK.SYS.VIR

DNSChanger.ad trojan at C:\System Volume Information\_restore\{F2681A7D-91E5-401A-AC8B-015335799DC0}\RP487\A0126105.sys

Generic.dx!fe trojan at C:\System Volume Information\_restore\{F2681A7D-91E5-401A-AC8B-015335799DC0}\RP487\A0126106.dll

I will follow your new instructions and post the results later.

Thank you again for your help.

Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

Hello.

Those things your mcAfee removed were actually quarantined items from Combofix and some restore points which technically isn't dangerous.

Let's run a malwarebytes scan and then you can run a GMER scan.

Run GMER with the same settings as before and post back with it.

With Regards,
Extremeboy

Smile Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

I ran MBAM tonight. At first MBAM found a problem with the AntivirusDisableNotify registry key. I seemed to recall that this was a legitimate key and I was concerned that this was a false-positive. I did not want to delete a legitimate registry key so I did some research about this key. I learned that it is indeed a legitimate registry key that is defined by the Microsoft Security Center. The following site explained how McAfee can turn off the Microsoft Security Center Virus Protection Alert.

http://forums.spybot.info/archive/index.php/t-3265.html

I checked the Microsoft Security Center Virus Protection alert and discovered that it was turned off. I turned it on, ran MBAM again and MBAM did not find any malware or other problems to report. Here are the contents of the mbam-log file after the last run. I have attached a screen shot of MBAM after I ran it the first time when it detected a problem with the AntiVirusDisableNotify registry key, too.

Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

Hello.

Nice researching. :)

Yeah, that registry key is legitimate, and Malwarebytes doesn't "delete" it but rather "restore it to default". Malwarebytes doesn't word it quite well, but just for your information.

Run GMER with the same settings as before and post back with it.
Then, pleaes take a new DDS run and post back with the logs.

Also let me know how your computer is running.

With Regards,

Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

Hi, EB. Thanks for the clarification about Malwarebytes.

I ran GMER again. It completed in seconds initially and it did not display any messages about malware. I decided to run the full scan anyway as if GMER had identified malware on my system. Of course, GMER takes a long time to scan the entire primary partition so I allowed GMER to run overnight. The next morning I discovered the blue screen of death in reference to a program called 'cmuadx.sys'. I might have the incorrect program name because I searched for this program on the 'net and I could not find any results for it. I shut down my system until this evening, which is when I started the same scan over again. The scan is still running right now on my PC. I will provide you with an update when it is finished.

Thank you again for your help.

Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

Thanks for letting me know.

If GMER doesn't work still, then I suggest you run RootRepeal.

Download and Run Scan with RootRepeal
We will use RootRepeal to scan for rootkits.
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop:
  • Extract RootRepeal.exe from the zip archive.
  • Open RootRepeal.exe on your desktop. If you are using Windows Vista, right click RootRepeal.exe and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab.
  • Click the Scan button.
  • Check all six boxes.
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.

Smile Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

GMER completed overnight. I proceeded to save the log file this morning, but I received the BSOD again after I specified a file name for the log file and clicked on the "OK" button. I decided to try one more time to run GMER (this was before you posted your latest reply this morning). I was suspicious that the problem occurred because of the name that I chose for the log file. I was trying to save the log file with the name of "gmer log 07022009.log" although I knew that the instructions were to save the log with the name of "ARK.txt". I decided to run GMER one more time and save the log file with the name of "ARK.txt". I started GMER this morning, and it finished by the time I returned home after work this afternoon. I was able to save the log file this time with the name of "ARK.txt". The BSOD did not occur this time. Go figger.

By the way, I gave you an incorrect name for the file that was referenced in the BSOD yesterday. The same file was referenced when the BSOD occurred this morning. The correct name is "cmudax3.sys". I did a little research on this file. It is an audio file that was developed by a company called C-Media, Inc. I believe that it is a legitimate file.

Here is the log file from GMER. I'll run DDS again and post the results of DDS like you asked, too.

Thank you again for your help.

Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

Hello.

Let's Install Java and then run the Kaspersky online scan.

The Kaspersky scan may take a while depending on a variety of different factors. Please be paitent while it scans.

Install Latest Java

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 14.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Download and Run ATFCleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program will clear out temporary files and settings. You will likely be logged out of the forum where you are recieving help.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select Run As Administrator.
  • Under Main Select Files to Delete choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Run Scan with Kaspersky
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner.

If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select Run as administrator to perform this scan.

  • Please disable your realtime protection software before proceeding. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Open the Kaspersky Scanner page.
  • Click on Accept and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
You can refer to this animation by sundavis.

This scanner will only scan. It does not remove any malware it finds.

Take a new DDS run afterwards as well, and post back with both of those logs.

Also, please let me know how your computer is running and what problems/issues you may still have.

Thanks.

With Regards,
Extremeboy

Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

* I installed Java 6.14 and removed all older versions of Java.
* I ran ATFCleaner.
* I ran Kapersky Online Scanner.
- A program called "ScanningProcess.exe" terminated abruptly during the execution of the Kapersky Online Scanner. I searched online for information about this program. It is part of ZoneAlarm. I do not have ZoneAlarm installed on my PC.
- Another unexpected termination occurred during the execution of the Kapersky Online Scanner. This one actually occurred first. I may have gotten the wrong file name, but I think the program was called "ScannerProcess.exe". I believe that this is associated with ZoneAlarm, too.
- The Kapersky Online Scanner completed after I acknowedged the terminated programs.
- Here are the results of the Kapersky Online Scanner.

Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

Hello.

Just a few things we need to remove.

First.

You need to empty out, or at least to try empty out almost all of the mails in your OutLook Deleted folder as well as your Inbox folder because some of those mails are infected. If you can't empty out ALL of them, I would be very cautious of the mails especially from senders you may not know or mails that have attachments.

This registry file should be deleted:
K:\Vwatson_backup\registrybu03022009.reg <- This file

These files are optional to delete. If you don't use it or do not need it anymore, best if you remove them:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Computers\Magical Jelly Bean\kf141\keyfinder.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Computers\Magical Jelly Bean\kf141.zip
K:\RECOVERED DATA\DIR91.ZIP\FIL668.ZIP
K:\Sprague1 Backup of Data\MyDocuments\Computers\Magical Jelly Bean\kf141\keyfinder.exe
K:\Sprague1 Backup of Data\MyDocuments\Computers\Magical Jelly Bean\kf141.zip

Then, you're good to go. We can cleanup.

--------

Let's cleanup our mess and remove the tools we have used.

Please follow/read the steps below to remove the tools we used and for some more information. :)

Uninstall ComboFix

Remove Combofix now that we're done with it.
  • Click on your Start Menu, then Run....
  • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Notice the space between the "x" and "/".

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
This will remove files/folders assoicated with combofix and uninstall it.

Download and Run OTC

We will now remove the tools we used during this fix using OTC.
  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.

System A bit Slow? Try StartupLight

You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.
If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in this thread (PC running slow...?)

Congratulations! You now appear clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Preventing Infections in the Future

Please also have a look at the following links, giving some advice and Tips to protect yourself against malware and reduce the potential for re-infection:
  • Avoid gaming sites, underground web pages, pirated software sites, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs. They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites. Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users.

Vist the WindowsUpdate Site Regularly

I recommend you regularly visit the Windows Update Site!
  • Lots of Hacking/Trojans use the methods found (plugged by the updates) that have not been stopped by people not updating.
  • Update ALL Critical updates and any other Windows updates for services/programs that you use.
  • If you wish to turn on automatic updates then you will find here is a nice little article about turning on automatic updates.
  • Note that it will download them for you, but you still have to actually click install.

Update Non-Microsoft Programs

It is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Update all programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs you have installed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Grin Re: PC Infected by Rootkit

EB, Here is a status.

* Located and deleted offending e-mail messages, and then purged deleted items folder. There were 2 phishing e-mails that pretended to be from eBay.
* Deleted backup of registry, K:\Vwatson_backup\registrybu03022009.reg.
* Emptied recycle bin.
* Uninstalled ComboFix. Note that the uninstall process did not prompt me to enter anything, such as a '2', with respect to a disclaimer. The uninstaller displayed a message, which stated that the uninstall completed successfully.
* Ran OTC, and rebooted PC.

I believe that the "ScannerProcess.exe" that I mentioned earlier was really another instance of the "ScanningProcess.exe". I ran Kapersky again and the same problem occurred. I observed that both unexpected terminations were in reference to the "ScanningProcess.exe" program.

By the way, I tried to run RootRepeal.exe, but it did not work. It displayed a message stating that it was initializing. In the meanwhile, my CPU would increase to 50% or more utilization, and PageFile Usage would max out (2.5 GB). I left the PC like this for a while, but the state of the PC remained the same so I terminated the RootRepeal.exe process.

Thank you for the tips and suggestions.

EB, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for all of your help. I am very grateful for your help.

God bless you.
