Computer lags for every 2-3 minutes time interval. Could it be a malware?

Hi!

It's been a while since I posted a problem regarding my laptop.

The Problem: By 'computer lag', I mean the type where the CPU usage suddenly shoots up to a high percentage, leaving programs in the background lagging (e.g. firefox, games, etc) and unbearable to use. This happens every 2-3 minutes, then the computer returns to its original speed again. Then the process repeats itself. This started happening the past few days.

What I've been doing the past few days: It's been a while since I've updated some programs so...I updated my copy of Avira AntiVir, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Comodo Firewall, DirectX, etc. And I've uninstalled some programs to free up some space for the laptop (e.g. a-squared free). I did some disk cleanup by using the Disk Cleanup utility and CCleaner, and I've used Piriform's defraggler with SysInternals PageDefrag.

Even after doing all those the problem still persisted. After a while I've tried scanning with AntiVir and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (I use AntiVir as my main AV with Malwarebyte's as a separate scanner only), but it did not find any infection.

This has happened before too, but I'm not really sure as to what have caused it. Could it be a malware?

(I've read about if this could be hardware-related, but I'm sure it's not after reading over the internet, well I don't really know )

I'd really appreciate help to clear things up.
Thanks in advance!
