Not Sure What's Happened - Everything Seems To Have Died

My computer has gone awol (I'm currently on my fiance's). I got a virus yesterday - though I don't know what kind, it wanted to change my registry but I denied all changes - so I did a thorough Avast! virus scan but it took too long, the whole day so I had to cut it short. So today, I ran a shorter one and did it through Boot Up.

Well, it seemed to get stuck on the same file at 97%, so after several hours I restarted my computer and now, when I turn it on, there's an egg timer over the taskbar at the bottom and the start menu. None of the things in the little corner that are supposed to come up do, except for the time (both times I tried) and volume control (only the first time I tried).

The middle doesn't have an eggtimer but nothing will open, not even a simple .txt document. When I tried to open a .txt document all I got was an egg timer and nothing happened.

I don't know what to do :( :( :( I'm kinda hoping if I leave it off for a bit then when I turn it back on it'll be alright, but if it's not, how can I fix it? I can't open any virus checkers :(

My computer is XP by the way.
