Trojan.Vundo Problems and Automatic Update Error 1058

A couple months ago I restored my computer to its factory settings due to an unresolved issue which I believe had been a virus in its memory. Since then my antivirus program was Norton Antivirus 2005. I was unsure as to why I could not have the most updated Norton, which I had before the reboot, but had planned on looking into that over christmas break.

A few days ago I was on Surfthechannel and Facebook when I became infected with what I believe is the Trojan.Vundo. Random pop ups would come up and I would be unable to enable my Windows Automatic Update. I ran Norton which found and removed some problems. I then ran Avast which found some other issues and supposedly dealt with them. While pop ups would not come up anymore, any time I used the internet the window would change colors (the way it does when another window is opening, please ask if I didn't explain that enough) though it would not minimize and I still wasn't able to enable the updates. I then downloaded Windows LiveOne Care which scanned my computer and told me I had Vundo. After this I uninstalled the other two antiviruses and installed the LiveOne Care trial which told me that it had removed Vundo. But now it keeps alerting me to the fact that the Windows updates is disabled but I still can not enable it.

I have tried the workaround involving the running of REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL and so forth. That worked up to when I restarted the computer and tried typing net stop WuAuServ in the command window. It just gave me the same error message.

I'm not sure if this has something to do with the virus that may still be on my computer, though I have had no troubles with pop ups yet. But the Updating problem came at the same time as the infection so I assumed they were related.

Another reason why I suspect that the virus may not have been removed is that in the Windows LiveOne Care support log the most recent action states that the program could not remove this: Trojan:Win32/Vundo.gen!Y(80508019) though previous logs stated that is had removed a virus of a similar name Trojan:Win32/Vundo.gen!Y from a few different locations namely:
Twice: C:\WINDOWS\System32\uecrllcm.dll
Fourteen times: C:\WINDOWS\System32\uecrllcm.dll->(UPX)
Twice: pid:1232
Twice: pid:1352
Four times: HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\RUN\\15681352

I'd be grateful for any help you can give me.

Re: Trojan.Vundo Problems and Automatic Update Error 1058

Hi

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

To create HijackThis log:

Download and install TrendMicro HijackThis
* Once installed open HijackThis by clicking Start > Programs > HijackThis and click the button labeled
Do a system scan only

* Click the scan button in the lower left hand corner of the interface and HijackThis will quickly scan your system.
* Once the scan is complete the scan button will now read save log. Click this button to save the log file to your PC. Once you select where you would like to save the file it will open in your systems default text editor. Typically this application is Notepad. Post the log here.

Re: Trojan.Vundo Problems and Automatic Update Error 1058

Hi and thanks for the logs

Uninstall old Adobe Reader and get the latest one here or get Foxit Reader here.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Code:
Driver::
mailKmd

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Re: Trojan.Vundo Problems and Automatic Update Error 1058

Hello!

It seems that ComboFix is not on my desktop anymore. Is that possible? I'm almost positive that no one has been on my computer besides me but it's not on my computer. Should I redownload it?

Thanks!

The selected area was scanned.

My system is much better now and I've been able to enable the automatic updates. The only thing I forgot to mention was that the volume also stopped working around the same time as the infection and I noticed that in the Kaspersky scan it was one of the infected areas. I'd initially assumed it was just a problem with the laptop. Other than that it's running quite smoothly. Do you think it might have been my old java that gave the viruses access or a combination of several things?

Re: Trojan.Vundo Problems and Automatic Update Error 1058

Hi

Please see if there's any exclamation mark in device manager (You can open Device Manager by double-clicking on the System icon in Control Panel, choosing the Hardware tab, and clicking Device Manager). You may have to re-install audio drivers.

Yes, Vundo may have gotten itself there due to vulnerable Java.

We need to execute an OTMoveIt3 script
  1. Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click theOTMoveIt3 icon on your desktop.
  3. Paste the following code under the Paste Fix Here area. Do not include the word
    Code
    .
    Code:
    :Files
    c:\windows\bolivar30.exe
    c:\windows\fm123.dat
  4. Push the large MoveIt button.
  5. OTMI3 may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  6. Copy/Paste the contents under the Results line here in your next reply with a fresh hjt log. We'll get system restore clean a bit later.
  7. If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Re: Trojan.Vundo Problems and Automatic Update Error 1058

Hey there

There are two items with exclamation marks on them under Sound, video, and game controllers

MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device (cannot find free resources: Code 12)
Multimedia Audio Controller (not configured correctly: Code 1)

Re: Trojan.Vundo Problems and Automatic Update Error 1058

Hi

It looks indeed your sound drivers have to be reinstalled. Do you have correct drivers available? If not and you don't know how to find correct ones you may ask help at sound cards support.

Since the malware issue seems to be solved I'll give you all clean speech :)

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the
    Begin cleanup Process?
    prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
  • Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
    kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster here here
    SpywareBlaster tutorial
  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    2. Click run
    3. In the dialog box, type services.msc
    4. hit enter, then locate dns client
    5. Highlight it, then double-click it.
    6. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    7. Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade

Re: Trojan.Vundo Problems and Automatic Update Error 1058

Dear Blad81,

Thanks for all your help! I did everything you suggested and everything's working fine! Should I remove HijackThis and ATF cleaner as well? Also it seems Combofix uninstalled itself again.
I have no clue how to deal with drivers so I will definitely hop over to the sound card support.

I'm so grateful for this. You've alleviated a lot of stress!

Re: Trojan.Vundo Problems and Automatic Update Error 1058

You're welcome

You may uninstall HijackThis thru add/remove programs. ATF Cleaner is good for occasional cleaning of temporary items. I'd recommend keeping it.
