winfixer -- HJT file enclosed

I have winfixer popups appearing, and can't get rid of it. To make matters worse, I may have screwed things up and now can't boot into safe mode (screen freezes after logging in).

Possibly unrelated, but when I run Adaware the scan stalls on the file C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.Windows.Networking.RtcRes_6595b64144ccf1df_5.2.2.3_en_16a24bc0\rtcres.dll

Any help would be appreciated. Here is the HJT report, after running it through KRC analyzer.

Vundo!

Hi kwantum and Welcome to TSF!

Lets deal with these infections one at a time!

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\khhff.dll
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

    • O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\khhff.dll

      O20 - Winlogon Notify: khhff - C:\WINDOWS\system32\khhff.dll

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Much Better!

Now that looks alot better,Im betting all thats left will be leftovers!

Download WinPFind:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Restart in Safe Mode

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder!

Post back with the results from WinPFind and hopefully we can get ya all cleaned up!

Nice!

Lets clean up the leftovers and install a bit of security!

Be sure Windows is Showing Hidden Files
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tut62.html#winxp

Download Pocket KillBox from here:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox_beta_.exe

Highlight the list below and press Ctrl+C to Copy!

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ffhhk.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ffhhk.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\inst2.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\inst2.inf
C:\WINDOWS\system32\khhff.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ricyt.dll

Open Pocket Killbox-> Click File-> Click Paste from Clipboard!

Place a tick by Delete on Reboot-> Click the Red Circle to Delete!

Click Yes to the Prompts that follow and let Killbox Reboot the PC!

Open HijackThis and put a check by these but DO NOT hit the Fix Checked button yet!

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ricyt.dll/sp.html#44768

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ricyt.dll/sp.html#44768

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ricyt.dll/sp.html#44768

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ricyt.dll/sp.html#44768

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ricyt.dll/sp.html#44768

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\ricyt.dll/sp.html#44768

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

O16 - DPF: {11260943-421B-11D0-8EAC-0000C07D88CF} (iPIX ActiveX Control) - http://www.ipix.com/viewers/ipixx.cab

Now Make sure ALL WINDOWS and BROWSERS are CLOSED and hit the Fix Checked Button!

Here is a trial Registry Cleaner that may prove to be most useful in cleaining up dead ends and leftovers in the registry!

Run it once as soon as you get it and wait about 3 weeks and run it once more!

DO NOT run this more than once every few months!!

RegSupreme Pro
http://majorgeeks.com/RegSupreme_Pro_d4256.html

Once downloaded and launched,Click Yes to Update the Cache-> Click "Registry Cleaner"-> Click "Aggresive" and "Start"-> Fix everything it finds-> Name the Backup it creates and Save it somewhere safe!

Please Install these 2 to add to the Security of the PC!

SpywareBlaster:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Update Immediatly!

WinHelp2002 Hosts File
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Made Easy
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts2.htm

Disable System Restore
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...rc=sec_doc_nam

Go ahead and Reconfigure Msconfig the way you like the PC to Startup!

Go ahead and remove any of the tools downloaded that are of no use anymore!

Restart the PC and post back with a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how things are?

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few more items to address so please follow the instructions below.

Reset hidden/system files and folders

Windows XP
===============
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Windows 2000
===============
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Select the Advanced settings box option.
  • Select the Hidden files Folders.
  • Deselect the Show all files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Windows ME
===============
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Windows 95/98/98SE
===============

Create a new System Restore point

Windows XP
===============
  • Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • Select the System Restore Tab
  • Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • Click Apply
  • Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
  • This deletes ALL restore points that had the infection and creates a clean one

Windows ME
===============
  • Click the Start tab.
  • Select the Settings option.
  • Select the Control Panel option.
  • Double Click the System icon Performance tab option.
  • Select File System
  • Select the Troubleshooting tab
  • Check the Disable System Restore box
  • Click Apply to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Reboot the PC and repeat the above procedure again
When you get to this option
  • Uncheck the Disable System Restore box

For Windows ME..we MUST create a new restore point now as Windows ME will not create one automatically until the computer has been on for 10 hours or 24 hours has passed. To create a new restore point follow the procedure below.
  • Click the Start button.
  • Point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

Recommended Protection Programs

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
