slow security scan

Two weeks ago I did a McFee security scan, in two hours it scanned around 28,000 items and found nothing as usual. This morning I started a scan and 7 hours later it had gone through only 3,000 items. Why is it so slow?

Re: slow security scan

I could take a wild guess and say you have been infected with some kind of malware but that wouldn't be any use to you.

Do you honestly think anyone could help based on the information you have posted?

There must have been something different between the two scans, maybe there was something else running in the background without you realising?

Or you downloaded some videos but didn't realise how much they would drain your resources?

Bit of a needle in a haystack unless you post some details.

Edit; Just been reading the other thread you started back in April and i wonder if you are still having problems which are related. Which spyware programs are you running?

Re: slow security scan

Nothing else was running either time and my screen saver still isn't working right. I have McAfee security which includes spyware.

Re: slow security scan

Can you tell me the exact name of the McAfee security software you are using +version number? How long have you been using it? I presume its a paid for version as i can't find any security suites that come free. If it were free i would be tempted to get rid and let me advise you on some separate, free and effective protection, one of which would be Spybot, it is tried and tested and one of the best.

I am still not sure if your drivers are up to date.

Click start, right click my computer, click manage.

In the left column, about half way down click device manager.

In the list displayed on the right, do you see any yellow question marks or warnings?

Have you tried turning off your screen saver to see if it makes a difference? I can tell you how if you don't know.

Also try this, Click start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system information. What does it read next to "available physical memory"?

If you feel it would be better to post a screen shot, please click on this link for instructions;

How to post a Screen Shot

Let me know if any of this helps.

Re: slow security scan

The box says VirusScan Plus 2007. I've been using it since last September. I used to use Spybot. I took it out so I could put in McAfee and have a firewall.

There are no yellow question marks or warnings.

Available memory is 396.14 MB

I thought the slow screen saver was probably of symptom of something being wrong. It's been moving pretty slow for a while.

Re: slow security scan

I don't actually know that much about screensavers except that they are probably not as necessary as people are led to believe but thats only my opinion. Usually i would say that if your screensaver or any animation seems slow then there must be another resource depriving it of what it needs.

As mentioned before, Task Manager would tell us some of the stuff we need to know. Show me a screenshot of your task manager at a time when your screensaver is running slow.

I am researching your problem to try my best to help you, meanwhile check this out.

Is your pc running slow.

My McAfee was scanning fast tonight. In the two hours it took me to do this I completed a scan and started another.

This didn't work. I'll try again tomorrow.

Re: slow security scan

Yes you seem to be nearly there with the screenshot thing. If you want to post more than one screenshot, unfortunately, you have to repeat all the steps for each one. I'm a bit puzzled why the page you were viewing for instructions was not the TSF Articles page, but had yahoo plastered all over it????

Anyway, the simplest solutions are the ones that get it done.

The latest version of McAfee's virus scan is 2008. You need to get the update before we go any further.

Not sure if thats as easy as it sounds but let me know if you have problems and i will try to assist.

Regards, Dave.

PS, Why not tell us a bit more about yourself in your profile? I don't even know which country you are from.

I get regular updates from McAfee. It never finds anything when it scans anyway.

Re: slow security scan

would u mind opening the task manager 1 more time and taking 2 more screenshots. One while ur running the scan, and one while your computer is idle, (not doing anything). Only, this time, click the CPU tab twice once you are on the processes tab, this will show us which processes are hogging your cpu, since in all of your screenshots the cpu is maxed out.

Thanks,
Alupis

Re: slow security scan

Look where my mouse cursor is hovering over... you need to click that button twice to show us that information.

THanks,
Alupis

EDIT**** Sorry, I forgot that a screenshot does not capture your mouse cursor, so instead, look where there is yellow underlining.

Thanks,
Alupis

Re: slow security scan

Do you just want one shot of each or the whole thing which takes multiple shots?

Re: slow security scan

not exactly sure on what you meant, but one shot of each task manager with the cpu button clicked twice would be nice... so one with the scans running, and one without them running, but make sure to double click the cpu button under the processes tab before the shot. ( you only need to double click it once, if you leave the task manager open.)

Re: slow security scan

I think deejay100six is on to something . . the small program he reccomended will show what underlying processes/applications are using the generic processes ( svhost ect . . )
