My System

Re: slow security scan

Hi Brook,

My advice remains to uninstall McAfee and replace with some of the very good free programs out there. These package deals invariably put an unneccessary strain on system resources. Much better to use seperates. McAfee site advisor is a cool tool, i use it myself, as for the rest i'm not sure.

If you prefer to keep the security suite then i suggest that you try turning off real time protection of CA Pest patrol, there may be a conflict which could be slowing things down.

I have just read that if you haven't parted with your hard earned cash yet, you won't be able to turn off real time protection, therefore if it is only a trial version, uninstall it. You should still be protected by McAfee.

Let me know how it goes and any more questions post back here or pm me.

Re: slow security scan

In the Process Explorer, it is listed as "eTrust PestPatrol"

The McAflee site advisor is killing your cpu . . 70% cpu usage . . that sounds way too high. Check the settings or disable to see how much performance improves

Re: slow security scan

Start > control panel > add/remove programs

Look for something that says "CA Pest Patrol" or "eSoft Pest Patrol" and if you find it, (which you should) uninstall this program.

The following is advice given from JustPassingBy in your other thread.

Quote:
@ faradd : As I said, you shouldn't use 2 real time anti-spywares at the same time. If brook uses this security suite then he's already protected against spywares.
I am becoming increasingly suspicious that you may be infected and i think it best to make sure before we progress further.

Please click on the following link and follow the instructions carefully.

Please do not post your log back here in this thread.

After you are sure your system is clean and you still have problems you can return to this thread and we will see if we can help you further.

Re: slow security scan

Uninstall SiteAdvisor, and see if that helps your CPU usage.

For Internet Explorer

1. Click on Start, Settings, and select Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Select SiteAdvisor from the programs list, and click Remove.

For Mozilla Firefox

1. Open Firefox.
2. Select the Tools menu, and Extensions (Addons).
3. Select the SiteAdvisor Firefox Extension, and click Uninstall.

Edit:

Quote:
Available memory is 396.14 MB
McAfee will choke a system with that little memory. Even if the slowdown is recent, as opposed to it being slow ever since you first installed McAfee, it's possible a recent update to the application is using more system resources.

Windows XP really needs at least 512MB RAM to function well, and works better with today's security applications with 1GB RAM.

Do you have anything in your Add or Remove programs listed under eTrust? If so, what?

Re: slow security scan

Well, you have running processes for both those applications. SiteAdvisor is likely listed as McAfee SiteAdvisor.

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Re: slow security scan

@ Tetonbob, i wonder if maybe site advisor is not listed because its part of a bundle. He has McAfee Security Suite (apparently) so the components of that may not be listed seperately?

Re: slow security scan

Then you should take tetonbob's advice, (you will be stuggling to get any better) or uninstall McAfee.

Edit; ok, i'm out of here.

Re: slow security scan

You're probably right, Dave, SiteAdvisor is bundled with several of McAfee's Suites.

brook, if McAfee is slowing down your machine (and it appears as though at least components of it is) you may be best served uninstall the McAfee suite, and installing one of the free, freestanding AntiVirus applications such as Avira.

http://www.free-av.com/

I'd still like to see a set of logs before you take any action.
