Re: Need malware removal help

Hi again Rod

Looking much better – how is your system running now?

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Java Update
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."

  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Disable SpyBot Tea Timer
While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

HijackThis Entries
Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ljJBrOGx - C:\WINDOWS\

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

You may close HijackThis now.

Online Scan

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner.

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

This animation will guide you through the process:

**Note**

To optimise scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post back with the Kaspersky Log and a fresh HijackThis Log.

Re: Need malware removal help

Hi Iain,

I completed all the steps you requested. The computer is running well. There are no pop-ups, and it's running much faster than before we started. A few notes, though:

1. The exception is, my keyboard is very, very sluggish right now. I had noticed that before and thought it might be related to the infection, and I thought it had improved after the first running of combofix, but now it seems worse again. Might this indicate a problem, or do you think I just need a new keyboard?

2. When I turned Norton back on after the Kaspersky skan, it offered a PC Tuneup Warning that wasn't there before ("Your hard disks will be defragmented to improve your PC's performance"). Shall I go ahead and allow that?

3. I disabled spyware blaster before the Kaspersky scan. After the scan, I enabled IE protection, but when I tried to enable restricted sites protection, I got a warning from spysweeper that spyware blaster was attempting to change my IE settings and they recommended I not allow that, so I didn't. Should I?

The Kaspersky and HijackThis logs are pasted below.

Thanks,

Rod

Re: Need malware removal help

Hi again Rod.

The keyboard issue may well be the keyboard itself – do you have a spare one you could try?

Defragging the hard disk is recommended – please allow it.

SB was trying to make changes based on the entries I had you fix with HJT. Please let SB make the changes – we will need to fix the entries again though.

Clear out Norton's Quarantine folder. If you're unsure on how to do it, you can use Symantec's guide.

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

You may close HijackThis now.

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis log.

Re: Need malware removal help

Hi Iain,

I don't have an extra keyboard but I'm going to buy one today. Norton defragged the hard disk automatically and I enabled restricted site protection on SB. I did the new fixes on Hijack This.

I have Norton 360 which is different from the other Norton programs. I couldn't find a way to clear out the quarantine folder so I googled it and found some discussion about this issue. It seems they didn't build in a way to do this. I found a posting from a Norton employee suggesting how it might be done at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthr...=159294(scroll down to post #7), but he's obviously tentative about it (though the user reported back that it worked), so I thought I'd better not try unless you want me to.

I also wanted to ask you about the last entry on the Kaspersky report C:\sspsetup1_1877709373.exe Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Delf.jgi 1. This one is not in quarantine, right?

The new log is below.

Thanks,

Rod

Re: Need malware removal help

Hi Rod

I can’t believe a major AV company creates software that even it’s own employees don’t know how to work. If you’re happy with following the guidance then go ahead – otherwise just leave it. You migh find this an interesting read

http://www.thepcspy.com/read/what_re...windows_down/5

Looks like Spybot is possibly restoring those entries – we can try disabling Spybot.

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

You may close HijackThis now.

Please post back with a fresh HijackThis Log – I think we’re pretty much finished here. If you’re happy there are no more issues (other than hardware) then I’ll post my recommendations for staying safe and clean.

Re: Need malware removal help

Hi Iain,

I disabled Spybot on 7/16 at your request. I just checked and it's still disabled. Could Norton be the culprit? Anyway, I made the four new (old) fixes.

I'm glad to hear you think we're almost done. Thank you so much for your time and patience, and for the significant contribution to my sanity. I'm very much looking forward to your recommendations.

My only concern is about the last entry on the 7/16 Kaspersky report:

C:\sspsetup1_1877709373.exe Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Delf.jgi 1

That is the only item on the list that isn't in the Norton quarantine, so isn't that a continuing concern? (I have since run Norton, but since it doesn't say what it's done, I don't know if it quarantined that file or not. I also just ran spysweeper, and it found nothing.)

The new Hijack This report is below.

Thanks,

Rod
