500 addresses added and spammed

Hello,

I recently opened my Gmail account to find a number of bounced messages.

I never sent them, but when I checked my Sent Mail folder, it appeared that someone/something had.

I checked my Address Book to find that exactly 500 hotmail addresses had been added to it, all beginning with the first two letters and proceeding alphabetically. I can only assume it was a part of an enormously long list of such addresses and that 500 is the maximum number of addresses to be added.

The spam had not been sent to any of my real Contacts. Or so I thought.

I checked my sent mail again and noticed that a spam had been sent the week prior to the person I contact most often. I hadn't noticed because it hadn't bounced and his company's filters must've swallowed it.

The next day, as I was still puzzling over what to do, the same spam was sent to the 6 people on my "Most Contacted" list. I changed my password and security question on another computer, I ran many many anti-spyware programs, I contacted Google.

Nothing has happened since (2 days ago) except a seemingly automatic reply from the Gmail people claiming the problem has been resolved, which I don't believe for a second.

Thank you in advance for your help. Below are the contents of the "main.txt" file. The "extra.txt" file is attached.

Sabine

Re: 500 addresses added and spammed

Hello Sabine_S and welcome,

I'm not seeing anything in the logs posted. Do you have the results of the Panda online scan?

If you haven't run it yet, please do so now:

Perform an online scan with Panda ActiveScan
  • Click on Scan Your PC Now
  • A "pop up" window will appear, or a new tab will open.
  • Click on Register
  • Choose the option you like most, but we recommend the Free Registration.
  • Click on Register
  • Enter your e-mail address, and create a password.
  • Select "I do not want to receive any type of information". (unless you want to receive such information)
  • Click on Send
  • Confirm registration, and continue by entering your user name and password, then click on Enter
  • Select Full Scan, then Click on Scan Now
  • Wait for the components to be loaded and installed. Don't close this window or go to another page while it is downloading. You can continue using the Internet by opening another window in your browser.
  • If it finds any malware it can disinfect, the Disinfect button will be enabled. Click on Disinfect
  • Please ignore the offer to buy the program. Click on Export To
  • Export the log and save it to your desktop.

Re: 500 addresses added and spammed

Thanks for helping me, Ried!

I did do the PandaScan, but for some reason the exported log disappeared from my desktop. I'll search for it and/or run the scan again when I am at home (currently on another machine).

Maybe I accidentally fixed the problem by doing that bunch of virus scans? Maybe Google was telling the truth? No spams have been sent since I first posted.

I will post the Panda thing this evening.

Regards,

Sabine_S

Re: 500 addresses added and spammed

Thanks Sabine_S,

Nothing there but undesirable cookies and items located in C:\System Volume Information\, which is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be resetting/clearing the cache shortly.

----------------------------------------------------------

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

------------------------------------------------------------

Create a new System Restore point
Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
* Select the System Restore Tab
* Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Click Apply
* Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
This will flush out previous restore points (which contain the infections) and create a new restore point.

------------------------------------------------------------

Is everything still running clear? Any more spam being sent out?

Re: 500 addresses added and spammed

I followed your instructions. Everything has been running fine since that initial spamming, so whether it was your kind help or my random deletions or gmail actually addressing the problem, it seems to have been fixed.

Thanks for your time and effort!

Re: 500 addresses added and spammed

You're welcome, but the credit goes to you.

Quote:
I changed my password and security question on another computer, I ran many many anti-spyware programs, I contacted Google.
This was the single most important action you took.

Nothing has happened since (2 days ago) except a seemingly automatic reply from the Gmail people claiming the problem has been resolved, which I don't believe for a second.
I would say between your actions, and those by Gmail people, solved your issue.

Nice work.
