Relentless adware

Hi, I have been getting incessant pop ups while browsing the internet for the past few weeks, and am in desperate need of help.

If it helps, I know the problem started when I downloaded something off of Limewire (I know, stupid), and since then I have downloaded multiple adware/spyware/virus removers including AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, AVG, avast!, HijackThis, Windows Defender, and SmitfraudFix.

ADDITIONAL INFO: The popups relate to the current Internet info being looked at, examples include the popup from securityscannersite.com which yields a box that claims the computer is infected, another common one is ad from OVGuide.com, and the rest are generic ads.

Re: Relentless adware

No problem and thanks for replying.

The problem persists, and besides being a major nuisance with all the pop ups I also fear it may be harmful, as with some pop ups I get a message from AVG saying TrojanLoop found and the only way to get rid of it is to cancel the pop up window and move the loop to the vault.

Re: Relentless adware

Hi,

Did you install a program called Uniblue Registry Booster?

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs.

AVG7
Avast!

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please uninstall one of them and keep only one.
_________

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running combofixl:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

________

HJT Uninstall list
  • Open HijackThis > Click "Misc Tools Section"
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager".
  • Click "Save List".
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy the contents of the file to your next reply.

Re: Relentless adware

Thanks for taking the time to help, I really appreciate it.

A few things first, I uninstalled avast! like you instructed me to do. Also, in regards to the Uniblue Registry question I am not sure, I believe I did download some sort of registry thing in the past but I am not quite positive, and when I looked for it in Add/Remove Programs it wasn't there, so I could not uninstall it.

Also, I tried to follow the ComboFix directions carefully but it appears I failed in installing the recovery console (I do not have my Windows CD with me and so I tried downloading it online and I thought it worked but after ComboFix gave me the log at the top it says WARNING! Does not have recovery console ((see below)) )

Finally, it might be important to add that I received the dreaded blue screen of death during my first run of ComboFix. However, I rebooted the computer and ran it again and it worked perfectly. Just wanted to let you know in case this could be serious.

Re: Relentless adware

Well, I have been browsing the internet for a good 10 minutes and so far, no annoying pop-ups. Also, I have noticed the speed increase by a ton. It seems ComboFix did the trick.

Thanks a bunch. I'll post again on this thread if it reappears but it looks as if it is gone.

BTW, any idea what file might have been the malware?

Re: Relentless adware

Hi,

We're not done yet. You still have some malware present. You should follow up with the fix until I declare that you are clean.

You didn't post the hijackthis uninstall list in your previous post. Please do so in your next post.

Did you drag and drop the Recovery console package to combofix?

Please follow these instructions to install the Recovery console package correctly:

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.
  • At the next prompt, click 'No' and do not run the full ComboFix scan.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please post the log that combofix created.

On your next reply, please include a
  • combofix log
  • uninstall list

Re: Relentless adware

Hi,

Some optional uninstalls..

LimeWire 4.16.6
Even when a program like this is not infected itself, it will still bring malware into your system because more than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. I recommend that you remove this program from your system.

Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player
are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". In 2006, this may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

*If you choose to remove those optionals, click start > control panel > add or remove programs > uninstall the optionals.

Delete the following folders if you uninstalled their corresponding programs:

C:\program files\Limewire
C:\program files\Viewpoint
__________
