Vundo.N, JS Psyme... Infestation (pop-ups, slow system)

Unfortunately, I was not able to run the Panda Scan because the website would not allow me to log-in no matter how many times I signed up.

But, I did run the Deckard's Scan and a log is attached.

Among my problems are:

- typing is harder and characters take longer to show up my monitor
- computer behaving erratically (slow, freezing up)
- pop-ups while on the Internet
- desktop and Start taskbar disappear sporadically

The viruses found on my system by AVG:
-Trojan Horse.DXP
-Generic10.QHC
-Downloader.Small.61.AG
-Generic10.PDT
-Vundo.N
-JS Psyme

Re: Vundo.N, JS Psyme... Infestation (pop-ups, slow system)

Hello Aidenne.

Please save this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

------------------------------------------------------

It appears you have two antivirus programs installed and no firewall enabled.

Quote:
Windows Internal Firewall is disabled.

FW: Panda Titanium Antivirus 2005 v4.02.00 (Panda Software) Disabled
AV: Panda Titanium Antivirus 2005 v4.02.01 (Panda Software) Disabled Outdated
AV: AVG 7.5.524 v7.5.524 (Grisoft)
Having more than one antivirus program installed can lead to system instability or even system hangs. Since Panda AV is outdated, I would recommend uninstalling Panda Titanium Antivirus 2005 via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel.

To be sure no remnants remain, please download the Panda Titanium AV 2005 Uninstaller UNINST_v1012.exe and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on the file. An MS-DOS window will open.
  • Press Y to start the removal process.
  • Restart the computer when asked.
  • Then delete UNINST_v1012.exe from your desktop.
For now enable your Windows Firewall via the Security Center in your Control Panel and when we are done I can suggest some good, free third-party firewalls.

------------------------------------------------------

If your system seems sluggish, it is most likely due to low RAM.

Quote:
Percentage of Memory in Use: 91%
Physical Memory (total/avail): 223.48 MiB / 19.74 MiB
Total Physical Memory: 224 MiB (512 MiB recommended).
Please read the following article: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/m...wcomputer.html

For information on what you would need, please visit Crucial where you can either input your model number or download a small application that will tell you exactly the type of RAM you need.

------------------------------------------------------

I see you have P2P software ( Ares and BitTorrent ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here, here, and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall them, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you decide to uninstall them, also delete these Folders if they still exist:

C:\Program Files\BitTorrent
C:\Program Files\Ares

------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall the following via Start > (or My Computer) > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs if they still exist:

Coupon Printer for Windows<<Please read here
WeatherBug Browser Bar<<Please read here

------------------------------------------------------

Please visit this webpage for instructions on downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery(repair) mode, if needed. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Get help here
  • Please click Yes to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a log for you.

Please post that log, ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleansing the system.

------------------------------------------------------

Please download HijackThis and Save it to your Desktop.

Alternate link

This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double-click on HijackThis.exe

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Please post the HijackThis log in your next reply. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

C:\ComboFix.txt
new HijackThis log

If you have any questions along the way...STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: Vundo.N, JS Psyme... Infestation (pop-ups, slow system)

Thank you. But when I tried to delete the Panda Antivirus from "Add/Remove Programs", it wouldn't go anywhere. Should I just go ahead and uninstall it with the program you gave me?

Re: Vundo.N, JS Psyme... Infestation (pop-ups, slow system)

While trying to install ComboFix, the Windows Recovery Console file I was instructed to download won't install when dragged on top of the ComboFix icon.

When I tried to download the Windows Recovery Console by itself (I don't have a Windows CD), a prompt said that I needed a six floppy disks.

I only need to know if I should still run ComboFix with this problem.

Re: Vundo.N, JS Psyme... Infestation (pop-ups, slow system)

Hello again, Aidenne. Sorry you are having trouble. Let's try this:

Follow the tutorial instructions for users who don't have the XP Home CD. It is a simple procedure.

You can use this direct link to the file you need:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Just click the download button and follow the tutorial instructions for dragging and dropping onto the ComboFix.exe icon, and then continue with the instructions in my last post.

If this still fails to install the Recovery Console, please give us more details about what happens or doesn't happen. Are you getting a message from ComboFix? Does ComboFix start when you drop the file? Do you get a prompt to run ComboFix?

Please let us know.

Re: Vundo.N, JS Psyme... Infestation (pop-ups, slow system)

ComboFix starts when I drop the file, and from the tutorial, it's not supposed to. Its supposed to install the Microsoft stuff first.

Oh, and now my entire desktop has disappeared-- But I will try what you just said to do again.

Re: Vundo.N, JS Psyme... Infestation (pop-ups, slow system)

Hello again, Aidenne. See if this will help.

As part of installing Recovery Console, ComboFix will begin to run. Follow the prompts to install the Recovery Console. Your desktop may disappear. This is normal. It will return. Once the Recovery Console is installed, you will get to this image:

Click on Yes, and continue.

Let us know if you still have trouble.
