pop ups and no control panel
Hi
This is my first time actually posting on any forum for help so I don't know if I am posting under the right forum! I keep getting a pop up that says: "Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\syster32\proper.exe" and a pop up about rundll or something. Also, I keep losing the control panel option from time to time. I tried to install microsoft sp2 but it does not let me install it. Here is the HijachThis log file Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 3:47:39 PM, on 2/24/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AppCore\AppSvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\gearsec.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe C:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\hphmon05.exe C:\HP\KBD\KBD.EXE C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\VTTimer.exe C:\WINDOWS\AGRSMMSG.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\comp\hptskmgr.exe C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeperUI.exe C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\HPZipm12.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\WISPTIS.EXE C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jucheck.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SSU.EXE C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...ion&pf=desktop R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0579B4B6-0293-4d73-B02D-5EBB0BA0F0A2} - C:\Program Files\AskSBar\SrchAstt\1.bin\A2SRCHAS.DLL R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Re: pop ups and no control panel
hi,
Thank you for the reply!! yes, I still do need help but I was busy for the past day or so! I tried doing what you told me to but it gave me an error. "dss.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about this problem. " I looked at the error report and it said " Error signature AppName: dss.exe AppVer: 3.2.8.1 ModName: ntdll.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.1217 Offset: 000085c0" I tried about 5 times but got the same error message. What should I do next??Please helP! I appreciate all the help! Thank you soo much! |

Re: pop ups and no control panel
Hi again....
Let's see if we can unstick it. I only wish you'd have posted after the first failure, so we could have addressed it sooner, and saved you some anguish. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please run Deckard's System Scanner once again, this time using these instructions (this assumes dss.exe is on your desktop, as instructed): Click the Windows 'Start' button > Select 'Run' - then copy/paste this into the run box & click OK "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config On the left side, under main log UnTick: Temp Cleanup On the right side, under Extra Log, UnTick Event Logs Click Scan! When finished, it shall produce two logs for you. Post those logs in your next reply. If it still errors out, please make note of what module DSS is scanning in it's event window when it closes.

Re: pop ups and no control panel
Good job, uniqeme, that's just fine.
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first. The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode. This allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log. If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding.

Re: pop ups and no control panel
hi!
I installed the recovery console and when I tried to open the combofix, it went upto the stage where it said "scanning for infected files..." But then it gave me an error message saying "This machine has the Recovery console installed. Aborting operations." What should I do now? |

Re: pop ups and no control panel
Do you recall installing the Recovery Console before?
