ZlobDNSChanger - Redirects and PC Performance Problems
My wife's laptop was infected with ZlobDNSChanger amongst various others. I've managed to resolve (I think) all of the other issues but I'm unable to remove this despite spending several hours reading various sites...so I thought I come here and ask the experts before I tried anything that would mess things up permanently.
Please let me know if there's anything I've forgotten to post or I've missed a stage out anywhere...I'm pretty sure I followed the instructions though. Thanks in advance. Re: ZlobDNSChanger - Redirects and PC Performance Problems
You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.
Please download FixWareout from one of these sites: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...Fixwareout.exe http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal. Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved. Please post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt ) in your next reply. **If you receive an error message while trying to run FixWareout, copy autoexec.nt from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder to C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder, and run FixWareout again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: ZlobDNSChanger - Redirects and PC Performance Problems
Any more re-directs?
Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan using Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: ZlobDNSChanger - Redirects and PC Performance Problems
The re-directs seem to have stopped, I've been using the laptop this morning and have had no problems.
Here is the report from the Kaspersky, though it seems to be skipping an awful lot of locked files. Re: ZlobDNSChanger - Redirects and PC Performance Problems
Locked files are simply files which are in use, often system files. Those showing in this log are not a concern.
Other items found by Kaspersky are in TEMP (run CCleaner), or in Symantec Quarantine. You may find the instructions on this page helpful in removing them finally from your system. http://www.d.umn.edu/itss/security/nav/quarantine.html Or, delete the contents of this folder, but not the folder itself. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition\7.5\Quarantine Your logs appear clean. You should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. C:\Deckard is DSS working folder. You can safely delete it. Also delete dss.exe C:\System Volume Information\ is where System Restore's cache is stored. Whatever is in there can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. Nevertheless, we shall be resetting/clearing the cache in a little while. Reset hidden/system files and folders
Clear & Reset System Restore's Cache
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you don't have them already:
Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles If you want to fight back the Malware Writers that have made your life a misery, please take a look here and read what you can do against it. Re: ZlobDNSChanger - Redirects and PC Performance Problems
Apologies for not replying more quickly, I've been away on business and haven't had time to do these final steps until now.
I've just kicked off a scan to make sure the little bugger has gone once and for all....I'll post again when the scans completed to let you know...I just didn't want you to think I'd done what you asked and just left without reporting back in. :) |

Re: ZlobDNSChanger - Redirects and PC Performance Problems
You've fixed all the problems that were left here, including that pesky Zlob beastie!
Thank you so much for helping out, it's an amazing job you guys do here and I think it would have taken me a system rebuild to solve this myself. Keep up the great work, and thanks again for your help, it's very much appreciated. |
