Re: Can't get rid of virtumonde and popups
Hi angelfire, yes the norton was restored. The problem with the popup windows trying to find "awvvt.exe" is when other users logon. This computer has 3 accounts: Bobby(me), Shellie(wife), and Christine(child).
I and my wife have Administrator rights. The windows popup only after a computer restart and logon to Shellie or Christine. I don't get them. The only thing is see different is something to do with google tool bar. I logged to their accounts to get the window up and then did a HJT scan. Here is the new log: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 6:19:33 AM, on 1/2/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16574) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware 2007\aawservice.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 3.0\PhotoshopElementsFileAgent.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\DefWatch.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehRecvr.exe C:\WINDOWS\eHome\ehSched.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\iaantmon.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 3.0\PhotoshopElementsDeviceConnect.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\WMPlugIn\SonicStageMonitoring.exe C:\Program Files\Sony\Sony TV Tuner Library\SMceMan.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\Rtvscan.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\VAIO Entertainment Platform\VCSW\VCSW.exe C:\Program Files\Sony\Sony TV Tuner Library\RM_SV.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SOUNDMAN.EXE C:\WINDOWS\ALCWZRD.EXE C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANT~1\VPTray.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe C:\Program Files\ALLTEL DSL Check-up Center\bin\mpbtn.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\Bobby.exe R1 - Re: Can't get rid of virtumonde and popups
Hi,
Please repeat the RegSearch for all the other accounts then post the results for each account. Make sure you label them properly and tell me whose results it is.

Re: Can't get rid of virtumonde and popups
Hi,
Christine and Shellie have registry remnantsfrom this infection.. Run this regfix in Christine's and Shellie's account. That should do it. Open notepad. Copy and paste the text inside the Code Box below into Notepad Choose File > Save As and under "Save as type", choose "All Files". Type fix.reg in the File name and save it to your desktop. Code:
REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\MUICache] "C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\awvvt.exe"=- [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows] "load"="" Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4 Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file. Close notepad. Make sure that all windows are closed. Find the fix.reg file on your desktop. Double click it. It will then ask if you want the file merged to your registry. Answer Yes. Reboot. Let me know how it goes.

Re: Can't get rid of virtumonde and popups
Congratulations! Your log looks clean!
Click start > run > copy and paste: combofix /u That will hide your system files, clear your system restore cache and uninstall combofix. Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your pc's security. Firewall Application - Although Windows Xp comes with a firewall, you should not rely on it because the Windows Firewall can only filter incoming data; outgoing traffic is not controlled, meaning that malware/viruses that are present in your computer can access the internet with no restrictions. There are several other Firewall that can protect you better by filtering incoming and outgoing data. Make sure you get only one of these. » Comodo » Kerio MVPS Hosts File ~You can download it from here ~I highly recommend this hosts file. You can learn more about this here Install SpyWare Blaster ~You can download it from here ~You can read the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here Install WinPatrol ~You can download it from here ~You can get some information about how WinPatrol works here Note: Make sure you update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?" Happy safe surfing! Note: Please reply to this thread one last time so I could close it.

Thanks again Angelfire,
I will install one of the firewalls and the other programs you recommend. Combofix is uninstalled. Once again, thank you for your help. Bobby |
