Vista freezes after startup[moved from vista ]
Hi, I have a relatively new Sony Vaio laptop that is running Vista Home Premium. (Centrino Core Duo @ 2 x 1.73GHz, 1Gb RAM). At random times when I startup the laptop I starts up normally, then usually after it has finished it freezes. No movement on the screen at all, not even the mouse. There is no hard drive activity and the only thing left to do is to force a shutdown by holding down the power button.
This usually happens once but sometimes happens twice. I believe it all started when I installed some camera software (Canon solution disk ver. 28.2), these included: ZoomBrowser EX 5.6 PhotoStitch 3.1 Camera TWAIN Driver 6.6 Camera WIA Driver 6.4 EOS Utility 1.0 My computer froze for the first time and so I didn't only uninstall, but I did a system restore as well. I have the latest Pc Tools Firewall installed. It seems to definitely happen if I shutdown with that off and the windows firewall on, and also recently happened when I tried disabling my internet connection. I've scanned multiple times with avast av, ad-aware and spybot s&d but found nothing. I suspect that the problem may be a bad registry entry or service but I don't know exactly where to look. I've already disabled some services that I know I don't need but that just sped up the startup time a little and allowed the computer to freeze sooner. I'll also take the liberty of posting my HijackThis log here. Re: Vista freezes after startup[moved from vista ]
Hi, I just realised that I can make the laptop freeze if I simply unplug my internet connection (1 gig DSL) and plug it back in. It also freezes if I try to access the Local Area Connection properties in Network Connections, or if I try to open Device Manager. However, everything works fine in safe mode. Otherwise, the freezes seem to occur at random during startup or just after, and they are happening more often now. I can't find anything wrong with my computer besides the freezes.

Re: Vista freezes after startup[moved from vista ]
Ok, I believe I've solved the mystery. It appears that my firewall (PC Tools Personal Firewall Plus) was causing all my problems. All I had to do was uninstall and reinstall it and everything went back to working just fine.
