can't change desktop background

Hi. I am a complete newbie so I thank you for any help you may be able to give me. I ran my Panda Security and it removed SpyShredder and many other things. I have also run a program I downloaded called Windows Defender but it found nothing new. However, I know something is still there as it will not let me see my desktop picture, just a blue screen. I do see my picture when logging off.

Forgive me if this question has been asked. I did do a search but the results were too confusing. Sorry.

Can someone tell me how to fix this?

Thanks!!!

Re: can't change desktop background

The first steps in getting a possible malware issue resolved are to do this:

Please follow MicroBell's 5 Step process outlined here:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...tml#post342651

After running through all the steps, please post the requested logs.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Re: can't change desktop background

Copy and paste the following into Notepad (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4):

Quote:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer]
"ForceActiveDesktopOn"=-
Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. It should look like this:

Close Notepad.

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your system, and let me know about your desktop.

Re: can't change desktop background

Okay, did that. I can now see the picture I had set as my desktop before this whole mess started but when I go into Display I still cannot selecet another picture. The None option has a red circle with an X through it and the other options all have a red square with what appears to be a little person's profile in it.

Thanks for your patience in helping me deal with this. You are my hero!

This is normal. Are you saying you cannot apply None ?

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click smitfraudfix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"
and a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

Re: can't change desktop background

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once back in normal Windows:

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run ZonedOut again, and reinstall the protection.
