I am getting constant pop-ups with mostly websites advertising Anti-spyware software (UltimateDefender, UltimateCleaner, etc). I also get a Security Warning about trojan.w32.looksky.
Operating system is XP. I am not super computer literate, but I did go through the "5 Steps Before Posting a Log". The only significant problem I had was on Step 4 - I could not install Microsoft SP1a (I believe I already have Service Pack 2 installed) Attached are the files from Step 5 - Deckard's System Scanner: main.txt Deckard's System Scanner v20070905.67 Run by Brian Skelly on 2007-09-12 23:10:50 Computer is in Normal Mode. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- System Restore -------------------------------------------------------------- Successfully created a Deckard's System Scanner Restore Point. -- Last 5 Restore Point(s) -- 49: 2007-09-13 03:12:44 UTC - RP499 - Deckard's System Scanner Restore Point 48: 2007-09-12 02:23:21 UTC - RP498 - Software Distribution Service 3.0 47: 2007-09-08 15:15:42 UTC - RP497 - System Checkpoint 46: 2007-09-06 02:14:12 UTC - RP496 - System Checkpoint 45: 2007-09-05 01:37:55 UTC - RP495 - System Checkpoint -- First Restore Point -- 1: 2007-06-14 00:15:19 UTC - RP451 - System Checkpoint Backed up registry hives. Re: Constant Pop-ups - TROJAN.W32.LOOKSKY
Notepad is built in to every Windows Operating System. It's on the Start Menu, under All Programs > Accessories
The easiest way to open it is this: Go to Start>Run, and type notepad then press Enter. As for HijackThis, apparently DSS was not allowed to download and install it. For that part of the instructions, do this: Please download HijackThis to your desktop Alternate link This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded. Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis Upon install, HijackThis should open for you. Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe 1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'. 2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log. 3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: Constant Pop-ups - TROJAN.W32.LOOKSKY
Thank you for your help! I think we are making progress. I followed all the steps you listed. I had some trouble (ex. SmitfraudFix.exe did not run the second time when I double-clicked. Just downloaded it again), but I think I did get through all the steps.

Re: Constant Pop-ups - TROJAN.W32.LOOKSKY
Good job, that's looking better.
Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I see you have AVG Anti-Spyware already. Please update it's definitions, and run a scan where I have placed it in this fix. Run AVG Anti-Spyware
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked O2 - BHO: MSVPS System - {3CB70CC2-303F-4A6C-824D-013AE8CFDB6B} - C:\WINDOWS\nsduo.dll (file missing) Close HijackThis now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
Restart in normal mode. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please return with results from: AVG Anti-Spyware Kaspersky Online scan HijackThis

Re: Constant Pop-ups - TROJAN.W32.LOOKSKY
Please note, I made a change to the instructions above. The previous post has been edited. Refresh your page, please.
Use Kaspersky Online scan instead of Panda.

Re: Constant Pop-ups - TROJAN.W32.LOOKSKY
tetonbob,
I made it through the first several steps OK, but then had problems with the Kaspersky Online Scanner. First, it said I had to uninstall McAfee Virus Scan which I did. But none of the steps matched what was in your reply. 1) I did not get a prompt asking about installing an ActiveX component. 2) I never got a NEXT to click 3) I could not locate a Scan Settings button. There was a Settings button, but none of the things you listed (Scan using the following A-V database - Extended, etc) I thought I'd better stop and ask before I went any further. Here is the report from the AVG Anti-Spyware scan. --------------------------------------------------------- AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report --------------------------------------------------------- + Created at: 9:38:03 PM 9/14/2007 + Scan result: C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Skelly\Cookies\brian skelly@247realmedia[1].txt -> TrackingCookie.247realmedia : Cleaned. Re: Constant Pop-ups - TROJAN.W32.LOOKSKY
It sounds as though you somehow installed a trial version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus, and did not user the Online Scanner. The Online Scanner does not require you uninstall your current AV solution.
Here is a pictorial of the Online Scanner instructions: Online Scanner Please post a new HijackThis log so I can review it.

Yes, that's exactly what I did. My mistake! I uninstalled the trial version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus and reinstalled McAfee Anti-Virus.
