winantivirus infection

i've been infected by the winantivirus spyware (not the program). It keeps giving popups to their site. Also whenever I log into windows, my antivirus program shows that it's quarantined a trojan file in C:\Documents and Settings.....\Local Settings"

here's my log file

Re: winantivirus infection

Hello and welcome to TSF

You are using a beta version of HijackThis... Please remove it using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and delete any HijackThis Folders and Files you have now.

=============================

I noticed that you are using BitComet which is a p2p file sharing program. I think the nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. So, regardless of whether one is using a "clean" program, one may still be prone to infection by malware. I recommend that you remove it from your system via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

=============================
  1. Please download ComboFix

    Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop.

    Close all browsers.
    • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
    • Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.
============================

Reboot your computer.

============================

Click HERE to download a self-extracting version of Hijackthis. Double click on the file, by default it will extract itself to C:\Hijackthis

Next, double click on Hijackthis.exe. Click "Scan System and Save a Logfile." A Notepad will appear in your screen, copy and paste the contents of the notepad to your next reply along with the C:\Combofix.txt

Re: winantivirus infection

I don't download any programs from Bittorrent, so that doesn't give me problems. Also functions as a download manager for internet surfing.

Re: winantivirus infection

Hi Sinan,

Quote:
I don't download any programs from Bittorrent, so that doesn't give me problems. Also functions as a download manager for internet surfing.
What I mean is that Bittorent itselft may be a clean program (Bittorent Ultra is not, by the way, as seen here) but it's a known fact that more than half of all files (not just programs) available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. It's up to you to continue using the Bittorent but please be aware that your chances of getting re-infected is increased by doing so.

The logs are looking much better. You probably do not get any popups anymore.

This would be a good time to run the following tools to clean up left overs and check if there is anything else hiding.

Please download Ccleaner and save it to your desktop.
Tutorial for CCleaner
During the installation be sure to UN-check the box for "Ccleaner Yahoo Toolbar" unless you want it. Do not scan with it yet.

=====================================

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the top of the main screen click Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

========================================

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode using the F8 method below.
a. If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
b. Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
c. Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
d. Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
e. Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

=======================================

From Safe Mode run Ccleaner
  • Click on Options,
  • Select Advanced
  • Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected.
  • Do not use the "Issues" block . It's meant for professionals.
  • Choose the Windows tab.
  • Check everything EXCEPT Advanced part of the Menu.
  • Click on "Analyze". This process could take a while.
  • If you don't want to loose your login passwords to certain sites, click on Options
  • Select cookies and move the ones you want to keep to the "cookies to keep" section, by highlighting and using the arrows in the middle.
  • Choose Run Cleaner.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.
If you have more than one users, run Ccleaner for every user

========================================

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
    Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, **Please ensure it is set to Quarantine then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

=========================================

Reboot in Normal Mode.

=========================================

Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  • Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  • A "pop up" window will appear. Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  • Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click and post back the contents please.
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.

==========================================

Please post back the results from AVG Anti-Spyware and Panda online scans, and a fresh HijackThis log. Please let me know how the computer is behaving now.

Re: winantivirus infection

Hi Sinan,

Well done. It's looking very good. You can go ahead and delete Combofix from your desktop now. I don't know if you've removed Bit Comet or not. If you did, there is a couple of related entries that can be fixed with HijackThis.
Please continue with the following instructions to fix them, if you had removed it, otherwise skip this step. You'll need to disable AVG Anti-Spyware realtime shileld first so that it will not interfere with the fix.

Open AVG Anti Spyware. Under 'Status',click on "change status" to make it 'inactive'. Once your log is clean you can re-enable it.
Next, scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries:

O8 - Extra context menu item: &D&ownload &with BitComet - res://C:\Program Files\BitComet\BitComet.exe/AddLink.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: &D&ownload all video with BitComet - res://C:\Program Files\BitComet\BitComet.exe/AddVideo.htm
O8 - Extra context menu item: &D&ownload all with BitComet - res://C:\Program Files\BitComet\BitComet.exe/AddAllLink.htm

Close all browsers including this one and click on "fix checked".

Then, using Windows Explorer (right click on Start, click on Explore), locate and deletethe following folders folders:

C:\Program Files\BitComet <========if you fixed it.
C:\QooBox
C:\Combofix
====================================

Since AVG Anti Spyware is a trial version, the realtime guard and automatic update will stop functioning after the trial period. That is why we are not installing the guard so it will not interfere with the cleanup or the malware removal process. You can use AVG-AS as an on-demand scanner (recommended) but you will have to manually update the definition file each time you scan.

Ccleaner is also a useful tool to keep for cleaning your cookies and temp files on a regular basis.

=============================

Create a new System Restore point to prevent reinfection from old restore points.

Go to Start>Run and type sysdm.cpl. Press Enter
  • Select the System Restore Tab
  • Place a check in "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • Click Apply
  • next, uncheck the same checkbox.
  • Click Apply
  • Click OK
You can also find instructions on how to disable and re enable system restore here:
Windows XP System Restore Guide

A colleague of ours has excellent information and tips on the prevention of malware here and more on improving speed/system performance after malware removal here

=============================

Please come back and let me know if everything is OK, so that we can close the thread.

Happy surfing!

Re: winantivirus infection

all is well now. I decided to keep BitComet but will take precautions against getting infections/spyware from downloads as I already am (scanning etc). I did the System Restore step, clearing up a lot of free space on my hard drive in the process. I just have one question left; I have a 320gb hard drive, and find that the default 12% system restore is outrageous as it uses up to 36gb. What would be the recommended space to allot to System Restore?

Re: winantivirus infection

Hi,

Code:
all is well now.
I am happy to hear that.

System Restore requires at least 200 MB of available space on the hard disk (or the partition that contains your operating system folder). It's advised that you should allocate more space for best performance and protection, . You cannot exceed 12 percent of the available disk space, but can reduce it to a lesser percentage. I personally keep mine at 12 percent.
