I recently downloaded a trojan attached to another file...Nortons caught it but couldn't delete it....I ran a scan and nortons found three files and suposedly fixed them.....however I now have these strange little red circles with a white arrow pointing northeast next to most of my desktop Icons....are these a result of the trojan or are they a normal part of XP....like indicators for programs on the startup list or what...please help!

Can you take a picture and post it here, so we can see it firsthand please?

Re: strange little buttons next to my desktop icons
This is a fairly clear-cut case of malware infection, and as there are qualified experts to help people in your situation, forum rules prohibit offering non-expert assistance (meaning help from non-experts).
The preferred process is to make your first post in the Highjack This! Forum, but since you have already (inadvertantly) posted here, most Managers prefer to move the thread to the HJT Forum rather than having the OP start a second thread. So don't do that. Sit tight, bump the thread if necessary and eventually your thread will get moved and you'll get some really expert (and FREE) help. Non-experts can read the thread, but offering help is verbotten. Here's why. Sometimes "help" can cause more problems, so to provide the OP maximum help in the safest manner possible, said rule has been created. At least that's what they tell me everytime *I* violate it. So don't make the same mistakes I have made. ![]() |

How
Follow Glaswegian's suggestions as if they came from GOD HIMSELF, and remember to thank him for his time, his expertise and also his "Scottishness". (He likes that, really.)
Also, don't say anything bad about Haggis. And (most importantly), never refer to a kilt as a "dress". Many men have actually died in a violant manner as a result of making this mistake. |

Re: strange little buttons next to my desktop icons[Moved from XP Forum]
Hi again
Your log is actually clean – so let’s start with an individual tool to see if we can find the problem. You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply. Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below. Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your log is clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean. Please download combofix.exe to your desktop. Alternate link. IMPORTANT - You must place combofix on your desktop!! Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, the tool will produce a log for you at c:\combofix.txt. Post that log in your next reply. Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.
