hjt and panda logs

hi, lots of popups etc since somebody else used my computer. Guessing they may have installed a P2P?? I've never knowingly used one.

Run Win XP Pro on a Dell, home machine, no network etc, Windows up to date, usually use Windows Firewall, SpySweeper, Spybot, Adaware.

Today - tried to follow instructions as best I understood. Deleted obvious cookies manually from Firefox, ran Spybot and fixed what it found, ran Adaware which found nothing, emptied trash and deleted all the Norton Protected files. (don't understand why it still shows some below)

Re: hjt and panda logs

I'm not seeing anything in those logs to go along with what your issues are. What sort of popups? Can you capture a screenshot?

Also not seeing any P2P programs installed.

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and run Blacklight

Note that you must have local administrative privileges to run the program.

Click Scan. BlackLight will use Windows Explorer (the desktop process) to scan for hidden items. Your anti-virus software or personal firewall might display a warning that says Blacklight (blbeta.exe) is trying to manipulate the Windows Explorer process (explorer.exe). If you want to continue the scan, you should allow BlackLight to do this

When it finishes, click Next. You may get a screen similar to the picture below. Click on Close.

BlackLight beta would create a log file "fsbl-<date-and-time>.log". By default, the log file is in the same directory as the executable. Please post the log.

kaspersky found a trojan

here are the kaspersky regular and extended logs.

Blacklight did not find any hidden items and did not generate a log.

Looking at the Kaspersky logs it seems quite a few things were skipped. Is there something I can do to open them up for scanning? Also, it's easy for me to delete the infected email and the infected Outlook backups. Should I just do that? In case that's not the right next step I'm going to hold off until I hear from you.

Thank you!

Re: hjt and panda logs

The items Kaspersky reports as Locked, Skipped are not to concern yourself with.

Delete the Outlook items.

What sort of popups? Nothing is showing in your logs.

Re: hjt and panda logs

The popups, at least I think they are popups, seem to flash by. It's possible I guess that they are ads being blocked by Firefox or something like that.

I deleted the relevant files/email. Upon rerunning Kaspersky it was clean.

But - I had tried to turn off my antivirus, when I checked again it was spontaneously back on. I have Symantec antivirus Corporate on this machine which somehow the rest of my Norton Systemworks doesn't know I have. I did it this way on advice of IT guys from work after having a lot of trouble when I installed a bunch of Norton products at once, had to disable Norton's firewall and start using Windows firewall at that time also. I guess this is all basically ok, jus t if there was a antivirus on while Kaspersky ran, does that make the Kaspersky check invalid?

Here's the new Kaspersky log.

Thank you very much! Am I clean now? And by the way, should I just run Kaspersky every couple of weeks from now on to check? Looks like what I thought was my source of trouble didn't have anything to do with the Trojan I actually had. Also - is there a way to tell whether it (the trojan) installed itself somehow?

Nope, sometimes an AV will prevent the scanner from doing it's job. Since the scan ran successfully, we know that's not the case.

What trojan? What alerted you to this, and what was it called by whatever did alert you? Because nothing since you've been here has indicated infection. We can certainly run another tool which may ferret something out.

The worst which showed in your original Panda scan were cookies which Norton removed.

See this site for instructions on how to empty Norton's protected Recycle Bin.

NOTE. You can "Right Click" the Recycle Bin, and delete both the Norton Protected Files, and the Recycle Bin. The Norton Protected Files, will remain on your system for 7 days default, before they are deleted, unless you purge them manually.

Download AVG Anti Spyware

Use the link at the bottom of the page under "AVG Anti-Spyware Free for Windows"

  • Install AVG Anti Spyware
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch AVG
  • On the main Status screen, under Your Computer's Security, click Resident Shield
  • Click the word active to change it to inactive
  • On the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
When you have finished updating, EXIT AVG Anti Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click on the Scan tab
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Once finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As and save it to your desktop. (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Restart in normal mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Post it's log, and a new HijackThis log.

Re: hjt and panda logs

hi, I'm replying from a different computer so haven't been able to run AVG yet, but here is the line from Kaspersky that led me to think there was a Trojan --

C:\Documents and Settings\Robert\Desktop\Outlook_2007_03_26.pst/Personal Folders/Inbox/03 Jan 2007 11:18 from eBay:Renew Your Favorite Search for Hosie.rtf Infected: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Bayfraud.ib skipped

Same thing was also in the main .pst file from Outlook. I deleted the email, deleted the old backup, made a new backup, and reran Kaspersky - this time Kaspersky came up clean.

Will get to AVG later today, hopefully just a couple of hours.
