While I primarily use Firefox as my browser, I have to use IE7 for a class. I am unable to change my homepage settings. Popups are also a problem. The popups all lead to a search engine I can't seem to recall the name of... I'm worried that there is some spyware that has hijacked my NAV, is blocking Windows updates from working, and may be doing other crappy, spyware things that are uncool. Can someone please help me?

Hi Matt,

Welcome to Tech Support Forum!

I apologize for the delay getting to your log. The helpers here are all volunteers and we have been very busy here lately. If you are still having malware problems, I will be glad to help.

First of all, you didn't unzip/extract HijackThis. I strongly advise you to unzip/extract HijackThis because HijackThis will not be able to make backups when it is run from the zip folder.

How to unzip HijackThis:
  • Right-click on the HijackThis zip folder and choose "Extract All".
  • An extraction wizard window will now open. Click "Next".
  • In the "Files will be extracted to this directory:" field, type C:\HijackThis. Then click "Next".
  • Click "Finish" to show your unzipped/extracted HijackThis folder. Run HijackThis.exe from here, or add a shortcut to your desktop.

NEXT:

I notice that you have Ad-Aware’s Ad-Watch running. Please disable Ad-Watch, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after your computer is clean.

To disable Ad-Aware’s Ad-Watch:
  • Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
  • At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".
    • Active: Switches Monitoring On or Off without closing
    • Automatic: Switches Automatic Blocking On or Off
  • Uncheck (red X) both items.

NEXT:

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval, but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006, read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

Additional info: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_137262.htm

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs (if present):

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player
Viewpoint Toolbar

NEXT:

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan". Place a check (tick) next to the following entries (if present):

O2 - BHO: Clicker Class - {631f7200-642e-11db-bd13-0800200c9a66} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mscoriezb.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Close ALL programs and browsers (including this one), leaving ONLY HijackThis open, then click "Fix checked".

Then please exit HijackThis.

NEXT:

Using Windows Explorer (right-click your Start button and select Explore), please navigate to and delete the following FOLDERS (if they exist):

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

NEXT:

Let's run some cleanup and diagnostic scans to make sure we're not leaving anything behind.

Please download CCleaner (freeware) and save it to your desktop:
  1. Run the CCleaner installer.
  2. During installation process, please UNCHECK "Add CCleaner Yahoo! Toolbar".
  3. Once installed, run CCleaner and click the Windows tab.
  4. Select the following:
    • Check everything under the Internet Explorer section.
    • Check everything under the Windows Explorer section.
    • Check everything under the System section.
    • Check ONLY Old Prefetch data under the Advanced section.
  5. Then, click the Applications tab:
    • UNCHECK everything there.
  6. Next, click the Options button, then click the Advanced button:
    • UNCHECK : "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  7. Next, click the Cleaner button, then click the Run Cleaner button (bottom right), then Exit.

CAUTION : Please do NOT use the Issues button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don’t know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

NEXT:

Please do an online scan with Panda ActiveScan:
  1. Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A new window will open... click the "Check Now" button.
  3. Enter your Country.
  4. Enter your State/Province.
  5. Enter your e-mail address.
  6. Select either Home User or Company.
  7. Click the big "Free Online Scan" button.
  8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
  9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes).
  10. When the download is complete, click on "Local Disks" to start the scan.
  11. When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the "See Report" button; then "Save Report" and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply.

NEXT:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner:
  1. Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner.
  2. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes.
  3. The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  4. Once the files have been downloaded click on Next.
  5. Now click on Scan Settings.
  6. In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  7. Click OK.
  8. Now under select a target to scan:
    • Select My Computer.
  9. This program will start and scan your system.
  10. The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  11. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save Report As button.
    • In the File name: field, type kavscan.
    • In the Save as type: field, select Text file (*.txt).
  12. Save the file to your desktop.
  13. Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the Accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.

NEXT:

Please download ComboScan by Deckard and save it to your desktop:
  • Close all applications and windows (including this one).
  • Double-click on comboscan.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open – ComboScan.txt (this one will be maximized) and Supplementary.txt (this one will be minimized).
  • Copy (Ctrl + A then Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of ComboScan.txt in your next reply.
  • Please attach Supplementary.txt to your post.
  • If you are unable to attach Supplementary.txt, then please copy and paste its contents in your post.

NEXT:

Please REBOOT your computer normally into Windows and post these logs in your next reply:
  1. The log from the Panda scan.
  2. The log from the Kaspersky scan.
  3. The logs from ComboScan.

(You might have to paste the logs in multiple posts in the event they are too long and breach the post length of the forum software).

Also, please let me know how things are running now and if you encountered any problems while you were following the directions I posted.

Hi Matt,

OK, let’s delete some malware files and see if your problem goes away.

Using Windows Explorer (right-click your Start button and select Explore), please navigate to and delete the following FILES (if they exist):

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional\setup.exe
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Adobe_Acrobat_7.0_Professional_Keygen\pdx-ac7p.exe
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\npclntax.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ticads.exe

Please let me know if you encountered any problems finding or deleting the files.

NEXT:

Please reboot your computer normally into Windows and then please post a new HijackThis log.

How are things running now? Please let me know about any problems that persist.

Sempurna,

Hello and thanks again. I had no trouble locating or deleting those files. I did so, rebooted, and scanned with hijackthis (after disabling Ad-Watch) and below is the new log. I note that it is still showing some element of "Viewpoint", and that reminds me of a something I neglected to mention previously. I deleted Viewpoint a long time ago...like two years ago. So when you told me to delete it before, I wasn't able because it wasn't there. I just figured I'd tell you that in case it makes a difference.

I was able to change my IE7 Homepage from the one it had been stuck on. I also received no popups while using it. Does the new Hijackthis log tell you anything? Should I remove anything else.

Again, I really appreciate this forum and people like yourself who take the time to help those of us without the same skizzills.

PS- Just out of curiosity, what about the Acrobat setup and keygen files are malware? I know that the ticads.exe was "trustclean" related, but what was that Mozilla plugin? Just wondering...

Thanks again,
Matt

Hi Matt,

I note that it is still showing some element of "Viewpoint", and that reminds me of a something I neglected to mention previously. I deleted Viewpoint a long time ago...like two years ago. So when you told me to delete it before, I wasn't able because it wasn't there. I just figured I'd tell you that in case it makes a difference.
Most likely some orphaned registry entries leftover from your uninstall. We’ll take care of it this round.

Just out of curiosity, what about the Acrobat setup and keygen files are malware? I know that the ticads.exe was "trustclean" related, but what was that Mozilla plugin? Just wondering...
Yep, those Acrobat setup and keygen files are malware. Are those original copies of Acrobat that you have on your system?

That Mozilla plugin is part of the Zango adware suite. Not really dangerous to your system, but can be a nuisance. It could also load other malware into your system.

OK, let’s make sure that there is nothing left in your system. Just one more scan to make sure your system is clean. You’ve done a great job so far. Well done, and keep up the good work!

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri).
  • Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your desktop.
  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select Option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
  • Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

NOTE : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
