My System

Morpheus Toolbar and TSPY_PUPER

I need help removing some spyware. I have Windows XP SP2, and have Spybot, Adaware, and McAfee on my computer.

I noticed today that Morpheus had installed a "MorpheusBar" folder (C:\Program Files\Morpheus Bar). It looks like it installed 2/7/07. I tried to uninstall Morpheus and the bar using Add/Remove. Morpheus itself seemed to uninstall correctly. However, MorpheusBar's uninstall program loaded something during installation called "A~NSISu_.exe". McAfee warned me that it had requested access to the internet. I decided to block access, and the uninstall finished. A~NSISu_.exe might be significant, since I have had problems with "NSIS Media Extension" popups in Firefox before. That NSIS infection appeared to be gone until now.

After I rebooted, the MorpheusBar folder was still there. Teatimer then alerted me that a "browser helper object" had been deleted. I scanned with all the recommended programs, Spybot, Adaware, and McAfee. Spybot found "FunWebProducts", which was removed. The online scanner Housecall found some adware, but there was one in particular it was not able to remove called "TSPY_PUPER". The error said "The current pattern does not support cleanup". Also, there was a .dll file I noticed in Program Files called "Uninstall Morpheus Toolbar.dll"

I think that this toolbar is causing some popups in IE7, and also slowness when using IE7. I also need to remove TSPY_PUPER. Thanks for your help.

Anyway, here's my HJT log:

Hi ct456568,

Welcome to Tech Support Forum!

I apologize for the delay getting to your log. The helpers here are all volunteers and we have been very busy here lately. If you are still having malware problems, I will be glad to help.

OK, here’s what we do first.

Go to the Start menu, and click on Control Panel. Choose Add/Remove Programs and remove any of the following that are listed:

StumbleUpon

NEXT:

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan". Place a check (tick) next to the following entries (if present):

  • This program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save Report As button.
    • In the File name: field, type kavscan.
    • In the Save as type: field, select Text file (*.txt).
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

NEXT:

Please reboot your computer normally into Windows, and then please post the log from the Kaspersky scan and a new HijackThis log.

How are things running now?

My System

Thank you for your help so far. I followed all your instructions as you said. My computer seems to be running roughly the same. IE7 seems to start faster, but I still have a problem with it "Not Responding" on occasion when I start it up (Sorry I forgot to tell you about this before). Ending and restarting IE usually works though.

Kaspersky found quite a few infected files. Looking at the files, it looks like there are several few PUPs, but some are programs I might actually need. McAfee does this all the time. There are definitely some other more suspicious files though. Hopefully, the actual viruses you can help me get rid of.

CAUTION : Please do NOT use the Issues button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don’t know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.
I have regularly used CCleaner since I got this computer, and I have almost always done the "Issues" function every time I run it, fixing all issues found by CCleaner - mostly uninstaller references and the such. I haven't noticed any problems with the function and I backup all the changes. Do I need to worry about this at all or stop using the Issues function?

Also, what should I do about any remaining MorpheusBar files? I still have its folder in Program Files and "morpheustoolbar.exe" in the Morpheus folder (which is otherwise empty now).

Here's the Kaspersky Scan Log:

Hi ct456568,

You’re most welcome, ct456568. Glad to be of some help.

Quote:
I have regularly used CCleaner since I got this computer, and I have almost always done the "Issues" function every time I run it, fixing all issues found by CCleaner - mostly uninstaller references and the such. I haven't noticed any problems with the function and I backup all the changes. Do I need to worry about this at all or stop using the Issues function?
Since you know what it is all about, then it is safe for you to use it. The caution is only for those who don’t understand what it’s for, and might screw up their registry. I still go over every line whenever I use any registry cleaners to clean up the entries in my registry.

Quote:
IE7 seems to start faster, but I still have a problem with it "Not Responding" on occasion when I start it up (Sorry I forgot to tell you about this before). Ending and restarting IE usually works though.
Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling IE7? That might cure the problem. If not we might have to do a system scan and see what’s wrong.

NEXT:

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:

To disable Spybot’s TeaTimer function:
  • Run Spybot-S&D.
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident.
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
  • Please download ResetTeaTimer.bat and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

NEXT:

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan". Place a check (tick) next to the following entries (if present):

Close ALL programs and browsers (including this one), leaving ONLY HijackThis open, then click "Fix checked".

Then please exit HijackThis.

NEXT:

Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit and save it to your desktop.

NOTE: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • From the main Killbox window, select:
    • "Delete on Reboot".
    • "All Files".
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\1164403324.exe
    C:\Program Files\Morpheus

  • Return to Killbox, go to the "File" menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • This is pasted into the "Full Path of File to Delete" field.
  • There’s a little arrow (drop-down arrow) next to that field. If you expand it, the lines that you pasted must be there together (if the files are present!).
  • Click the button with the red circle and white X ("Delete File" button). Click "Yes" at the "Delete on Reboot" prompt. Click "No" at the "Pending Operations" prompt.

If your computer does not reboot automatically, please reboot it manually.

NOTE: If you receive a message such as, "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, CLICK HERE to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

NEXT:

Let's run another diagnostic scan to make sure we're not leaving anything behind.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION : Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

NEXT:

Please reboot your computer normally into Windows, and then please post the ComboFix log and a new HijackThis log.

How are things running now?

Combofix does not appear to be working right now. Other than that, I have followed all your directions.

Quote:
The tool, ComboFix has been temporarily withdrawn.

The author discovered a rootkit infection that will intefere with ComboFix's running.

This will cause Combofix to be UNSAFE FOR USE on your machine.

Even if you manage to find a mirror for the tool, PLEASE DO NOT RUN THIS TOOL

Apologies for any inconvenience caused
I have a new problem right now however. When I started my computer up this evening, it was very slow and unresponsive to anything. An attempt to run a program or scroll down on a screen might take several minutes to load up. Down in the taskbar there was Kaspersky Antivirus 5.0, a new program. It also alerted me that its definitions were from 7/17/06 IIRC. Eventually my computer became useable, and I opened msconfig and unticked the startup entries for kav.exe, kavsvc.exe, and klswd.exe. I also disabled the service called Kaspersky Antivirus 5.0. After restarting, my computer was back to normal in speed. The Kaspersky Program Files folder was last modified at 10:01 AM this morning.

Kaspersky looks authentic, but it seems to cause a ton of slowness when I used it on startup. I have no idea what installed Kaspersky without my approval. I believe my brother was on my computer when Kaspersky installed, but I doubt he would install an AV suddenly for no reason. I will repost when I get a chance to ask him what happened. A google search says that certain trojans might try to install Kaspersky to remove competitive malware. This doesn't seem quite right though, since the program folder is not hidden and the program apparently operates normally. Maybe its install had something to do with the Kaspersky scan I did earlier? I will try the program again to see if it is a trial or full (fake or related to a virus?) version.

Sorry, I made a mistake. My brother just installed Kaspersky this morning. I'll just remove it to make sure there are no conflicts with McAfee. Please disregard the above post.

Hi ct456568,

That Kaspersky could be legit or malware. If your brother didn't install it, then it is likely malware. Even if it was legit, Kaspersky uses up a lot of system resources, that's why your system slows down. It is arguably the best AV in the world right now, but somewhat resource heavy. Paid versions of Eset's NOD32 program are lighter on resources, and equally good as a quality AV. Even the free Active Virus Shield, by AOL (and based on the Kaspersky engine), is lighter on resources.

You shouldn't have more than one AV on your system. Two or more will seriously compromise the security and speed of your system. If your McAfee is up-to-date, it is a reliable and good AV (although like Microsoft's OneCare it recently failed a major test).

Here's a recent survey done on the effectiveness of most AVs in the market now:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82

Yes, ComboFix was recently pulled because of a vulnerability that a new rootkit exploited. The developer is working on a fix right now. In the meantime, let's use an alternative scanner.

Please download ComboScan by Deckard and save it to your desktop:
  • Close all applications and windows (including this one).
  • Double-click on comboscan.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, a text file will open – ComboScan.txt.
  • Copy (Ctrl + A then Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of ComboScan.txt in your next reply.
  • A folder, C:\ComboScan, will also open. In it will be another text file, Supplementary.txt.
  • Please attach Supplementary.txt to your post.

Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

OK, I did as you asked. I couldn't use Combofix because of the error message:
