Browser Hijacks

Like another recent poster, I have problems with browser windows opening at random times. The go to Vortal fairly often, sometimes try to go to Winfixer (which Symantec does stop), and various other sites that do and don't exist.

I'm running:
Windows XP SP2 - completely up to date.
IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T43 (hence all the IBM & TP processes in the log file)
IE 7.0 (upgrading to this solved nothing, and only made things run slower)
Zone Alarm Pro
Symantec Anti-Virus version 10
Xoftspy ant-spyware.

They always find the breadcrumbs - that is cookies created by those random pop-ups, but no root cause. Here's my Hijack This log. I can't find anything odd or unusual.

Boy, would I love to fix this. A friend from Microsoft suggested the only way to get rid of this problem was to re-format and start over. I'm not keen to do that.

I tried to get rid of a couple of things from the log before, but failed badly and had to do a system restore.

Ideas and thoughts are welcome.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure

I need you to download some programs to aide in our fix :Do Not Run Them Yet

Download VundoFix.exe© by Atribune to your desktop.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune

Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Run VundoFix
Double-click VundoFix.exe
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
When it finishes scanning, Click the Remove Vundo button
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to "remove the files", click YES

Hi and thanks for the incredibly fast response.

Did as you requested. VundoFix found nothing. The HijackThis log follows after the next paragraphs.

In the interest of full disclosure (and you might get pissed at this because I didn't completely follow the rules), I disabled a couple of things in my start-up with msconfig. If you want me to put them back, let me know. I also deleted a couple of O9 network alert things from the old Hijack this.

Let me know if I need to start over again again. Someone I know recommended I flush old system restore points. I will not do that until you tell me it's the right thing to do. Browser is still spawning new windows like crazy.

Paula

Open Windows Explorer, locate and Delete the following folders or files in RED : (if present)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp39B.tmp.dll

Empty your Recycle Bin

Run VundoFix
Double-click VundoFix.exe
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
When it finishes scanning, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
Copy&Paste the following files in the 2 boxes :

BOX 1 : C:\WINDOWS\system32\cam3d9.dll

BOX 2 : C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\9d3mac.*

Click Add Files and Click Close Window
The files will be added to the Scan results list
Click the Remove Vundo button
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to "remove the files", click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK
The .txt file will be in C:\Vundofix.txt

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot

Please run Panda's ActiveScan and perform a full system scan.
Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button (be sure to disable your popup blocker first )
A new window will open...click the big Check Now button
Enter your Country
Enter your State/Province
Enter your e-mail address and click send
Select either Home User or Company
Click the big Scan Now button
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
Click on Local Disks to start the scan
Click on see report Then click Save report

Post a fresh HijackThis log, the Panda Active Scan log and the vundofix.txt file here

Thank you !

Hi. I've tried Panda before, and get the same result. I cannot get the software to download. The window it pops open does not allow me to say "yes, download activeX control and it fails."

As an aside, I am having a problem with Symantec continuing to shutdown. I am usually able to re-start it using the services manager, but this time around, it is failing to work. Could anything we did have caused part of that.

Anyway, here are the logs I have (no Panda).

I will try a reboot and see if I can get Symantec to stay up. Also headed out for a while. Thank you for this help. So far, I don't seem to have any pop-ups, and right when I started up, ZoneAlarm reported that my system was trying to reach a site that it recommended I avoid. That could be a good sign.

Best,
Paula

Re-booted, and as of this time, Symantec seems to be staying up.

I think we might be there, at least I hope so. Let me know if you see anything else in the hijackthis log. I wish Panda would work, but it doesn't seem to.

Thanks

Run HijackThis
Scan and when it finishes, put a check mark only next to these following items : (if present)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {03DBBA3F-003C-4D92-A253-B6EE3C90C34E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cam3d9.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0676CC61-CDC5-447e-AAFC-9D886EC820EB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp39B.tmp.dll (file missing)

Close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open
Click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis

Other than those 2 entries, your log seems to be clean !

Just one more thing :
**Turn off System Restore**
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer
Click Properties
Click the System Restore tab.
Check "Turn off System Restore"
Click Apply, then click OK and Reboot

**Turn ON System Restore**
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer
Click Properties
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check "Turn off System Restore"
Click Apply, then click OK and Reboot

How is your system running now ??

Here are a few tools that I recommend for protecting your system and reduce the risk of infection again !!

Real Time Prevention
SpywareBlaster© by Javacool Software :
*Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests
*Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
*Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
*Consumes no system resources

*Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done
*Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page
IESpyad© by EHowes : This will add several hundred Restricted Sites to the Restricted Site Zone in IE.

File Cleaners (temp, prefetch, cookie, etc)
2000/XP Only
ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune
All Windows
CCleaner© by CCleaner.com

Spyware Scanners:
Ad-aware SE© by Lavasoft : Provides protection and removal of trojans, dialers, malware, browser hijackers, and tracking components
Spybot - Search & Destroy© by Safer Networking : Detects and removes spyware of different kinds from your computer

Good Free Antivirus Programs:
AVG© by Grisoft
AntiVir© by H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH
Avast© by ALWIL Software
NOTE:Remember always have just 1 antivirus program running at a time. Having more than one running causes a conflict between the programs !! You can use one as a backup to run manually

Windows Update:
It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks
Windows Update

Firewalls:
If you have an "always on" internet connection, such as DSL or Cable, I recommend a Firewall.
A firewall will make your pc invisible to the outside world and will filter the outgoing and incoming traffic on your pc.
For a good idea of how vulnerable your system(s) are go to GRC
Scroll down to "Shields Up" Click on "Proceed" Then click on "Common Ports"to scan your ports.
Free Personal Firewalls :
ZoneAlarm Firewall© by Zone Labs
Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall© by Sunbelt
Outpost Firewall Free© by Agnitum Ltd
Jetico Personal Firewall© by Jetico, Inc.

Alternative Browsers :
Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness
FireFox© by Mozilla
Opera© by Opera Software ASA

I suggest that you Update Java:
Go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs
Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... ) and select Remove
Then Download and install the newest version :
JAVA SOFTWARE MANUAL DOWNLOAD

Always keep your Antivirus & Spyware Removal Tools current with the latest definitions and updates !!

Using these tools and keeping them updated will reduce the risk of future infections!!

Do you have any questions??
